I did not immediately appreciate why reincarnation was important…as a new player I couldn’t understand why anyone would waste all the hard work of getting to level cap only to “lose” everything. Makes me laugh when I think back on it. And I’ll add that I run with a diverse group who helped me appreciate how DDO can be many variations depending on the reasons people play it. One is a crafter. One has toons at every level so he can jump in with wherever everyone is at. One is a completionist. One is a drunk(ish) barbarian. We have a great time together! Thank you Mary for reminding us all to step away and get into the light. We always take important breaks. See you in HC!

I've only been playing for five months now and I absolutely love DDO! The entire past lives concept totally blown me away once I found out during the leveling process. Just a few days ago I reincarnated for the first time, and I was sooooo excited! I'm still a noob and I know that there's so much more for me to learn but imo, after playing so many MMO's since EverQuest, DDO is so much better than what's out there today.

something to note for new players: Each character starts with 1 lesser heart. So dont worry about making a mistake on your first character. But you can also use this lesser heart to change an Iconic characters class to a variant class. For example a bladeforged will always start off as a paladin, but if you use the lesser heart you can instead make him start off as a sacred fist instead.
thats good to know. does this take away the iconic portion of the build? in terms of you wouldnt have to go to level 30 to reincarnate?
A refreshing take on tier lists and one that puts players in the right frame of mind when approaching DDO. Liked, subbed and commented for the algo!
I came back during covid in 2020 after leaving in 2009. It was so different 11 years later, and it became pretty clear to me that getting as many past lives as fast as possible were the way to go along with some reaper points sprinkled within. Also:
1) understanding hit boxes and how monsters move and attack was important in terms of game play.
2) understanding spell like abilities and APs, and knowing how all the feats work.
3) Also, the PRR/MRR system which nobody explained to me early on was crucial.
4) Getting into a power full group that willing to drag you thru some R10s at cap will get you more power pretty fast.
Nice! happy you came back - I've played since beta though took time off for lotro when they released moria and then i ran a guild and raided in swtor in 2012 when that launched. Yes I plan to do a video on prr/mrr; and I am a fan of reaper - i think it revivified DDO. That might be a hot take, but I find the challenge of reaper questing really fun. You gave me some future video ideas thanks!
You are actually right Dark Lord.
The plus number for a heart of wood does not limit the number of levels of your alternative class. It limits the number of times you can switch classes as you level up. So if you want a two class build you need a +1.
You are not explaining it correct and totally miss understand. An +1 heart lets you pick a different class 1 time only during the releveling. Each + of the heart lets you select a different class 1 time during your releveling. You also can never have more than 3 classes total at any time on your character. So if you started with 20 levels as say a fighter and used a +1 heart you could do 19 levels of fighter and 1 level of something else. IF you used a +3 heart you could relevel that 20 fighter and 3 times you may pick another class to level in but you still may only have a total of 3 classes at any time. But you will have to take 17 levels of fighter still.
@middleagedgamers7750 you make a good argument. My recollection of using a heart differs, but I am probably wrong. If I were correct the utility of +X hearts of wood would be much reduced for X > 2
Really nice video! I played DDO a fair bit in my time, but in that time I was the player who just kind of made a character, did Korthos, and got to maybe level 6 or 7 and made another, and never played the game consistently. I played MMOs before, and played lord of the rings since launch to this day, and honestly that game has sadly just been me nostalgia chasing, as in my opinion it just hasn't gone in the direction it needed to go.
With that said, I downloaded DDO recently, within the last 3 weeks, one of the factors in me going to try it again was this video, and Strimtom's whom I've seen lots of videos for as well when researching the game. I did a pretty odd approach I guess, but I decided instead of learning and making the mistakes (others can see that as a good or bad thing but it is what I did) and just go the route of spending a week or two learning the game from videos before actually going into the game. So I did that, and I started playing the game, and learning about all the new systems the game has expanded on, and games have been increasingly harder for me to get into and stay playing, but when i say I played this game and it just felt like, after understanding a bit how it works, just felt like such a well put together game, and has grabbed that "awe" feeling I had when I played Lord of the Rings Online for the first time. My dad played this game for a long time, and I told him i was getting back into it, and well we've been playing together too so that has been a fun thing, as he knows his way around more than I do. xD
All in all I am very grateful people like you and all the community creators this game has to help new players, because I can agree DDO on the surface level is a harder MMO and game to get into, but once you're there and playing it's a pretty good feeling in my opinion.

How do I plan a character. Is there a planner available to help because this is alot and extremely confusing.
Hey Lumendelsol, the best place to start is pick a role, healers, dps, or tank, then from the role, find a class/race; what you like the most - melee, ranged, or caster, etc - helps narrow it down playing what you like
I love spell types so I got a couple energy critical feats in my first heroic life and it’s made game play so much better. I’m working on my 3rd warlock life now to get more mrr. I’m struggling to move into a melee build so I think I need to do a couple more epic past lives before I move into melee. Another thing I’m working on and struggling with is reaper points. I have 23 which is a good amount but I want my wings. I can solo r1 fairly easy if I know the quest. I do fine r3+ if I have a group.
nice - the revamp of the epic destinies will be interesting to see what gets nerfed and buffed - so far looks like there will be some major changes to all the caster destinies

Having played DDO on and off since 2010 and seeing all the sad changes made to the game over the years; past lives are the only thing constant.
many of the changes are for the better and make the gameplay more consistent for players with 1 or 100 past lives; prior to a few years ago it was very difficult for a 1 life character to do well vs a toon with 100, r10s were impossible; now on a 1st life toon with no rxp you can do r10s (not that youd want to) and contribute and not instantly be obliterated. There's much more balance and the game is in a good fun spot.
@@MaryXTV "Good fun spot", hate to point out the reality, you are in the minority and the majority has left, since update 14 this game has lost over 2/3's of the player base. With Warner Brothers buying the game it was dumbed down and less and less like D&D. Then Severlin came up with Reaper, unoriginal since he was just copying other MMO's, and in hind sight has stated it was a mistake. DDO was never made to be a solo game, and the powers to be listened to the cry babies who thought they should be able to solo an elite dungeon with their first character. I started just before Update 8 and this game was rocking. Even Wayfinder back then had larger player base then Orien has now.

I like the information that you are giving out. However, there seems to be an echo. It was a little annoying.
I do post process the sound - wondering what your listening gear is? are you stereo, phone, surround? the final signal looked clean and tested ok on a stereo, but on a surround maybe; i appreciate the feedback because I want it to sound clear and will check my setup.
@@MaryXTV I had the same issue, unfortunately, couldnt watch this video because it was literally painful. Its not so much an echo as a high pitched feedback sort of noise whenever you spoke. Stereo speakers in this case. Been enjoying your other recent content however. Cheers.
well DDO is many of stories... (expansion packs) ten past lives or ten alts... what about both!!!!!!
Because of everything I have none of my states are below 20. 68ish lives so far. I have barely touched Iconics. All I really want to do is play a fucking dwarf again. I mean I am building and collecting the best weapons, items, and armor. Just for the day, I can play a dwarf again. When that day comes. I think that ddo will shut down. Or They will come out with other dwarf races.
