I was mistaken on the bun warmer as one of my kind viewers pointed out and I wanted to clarify for everyone. This is actually a domed butter dish. The bun warmers come in a similar shape but without the insert and a vent hole in the lid. I hope this clears up any misinformation! Hope you are all having a lovely day.

    Jocelyn,
I’m Coast Salish Native. We make coil and woven baskets with sweet grass. FYI here in the Pacific NW sweet grass is in bloom. It’s found in salt water marshy areas. It is harvest season.
People often assume that weaving the basket is all that weavers do. While it’s true, one can buy harvested products, many weavers prefer to harvest their basketry materials. Once harvested, the material must be cleaned and readied to dry (or in the case of cedar, cured) which can take a year.
Once ready, the material must be cleaned again and then readied for weaving. Cedar for example is cleaned and hung to dry for one year in 4” widths.
Native weavers harvest at a certain time of the year. It is pulled from the older tree in about 6” widths. They only take so much so the tree can be heal and continue to thrive.
In order to work cedar, the weaver soaks it until it is pliable. Once cleaned it is split into basket sized strips.
The inner bark of cedar is thick enough to then split its thickness as well.
I have taken weaving classes and gone on harvesting jaunts. Unfortunately, I don’t seem to have that gene. Lest you think I’m kidding, one of our staff hadn’t woven anything except the simplest baskets. Her grandmother’s work is prized her in the NW.
When the granddaughter picked up the materials her fingers instantly understood how to manipulate cedar bark. This is called ancestral knowledge. On the other hand I’m all thumbs in this department!
Cedar was used hundreds of ways here. From canoes, to baskets, to clothing to fishing nets. In our museum, we have basketry that is 200 years old. And we have cedar netting from a fishing village in an exhibit showing an archeological dig from that village.
I thought you might be interested...

While I never say anything negative about a gift I receive - I am often given horrible, I wouldn't be caught dead with it, personalized gifts. Sometimes the giver just has a tacky/trashy sense of personal taste or is clueless on what a person really likes. This is why things end up in the Goodwill, especially if its an estate clean out.

I can't tell you the number of times that got wadded up, cursed at and thrown across the room! Crewel is not my sister's forte. She started calling it cruel! THE TAPESTRY THERE IN WITH THE BASKETS!! It appears from the edge to be one from Belgium or France. They are so nice, much nicer than the polyester type US ones. Sometimes they have a nice heavy tag on the back about authenticity. THEY GO FOR A LOT NEW< and are easy to ship. I usually find them for under $10 and they sell to those looking for them for over $100 if large enough, new I bought some for myself when living in Belgium for over $300 (when you consider it's like a beautiful painting but not the expense of framing...) BUT, always look at the tapestries always. They sell so quickly, and I love that they pack SMALL, even if they can be heavy as they are made well. You'll know when you see it.

Hi! I've been addicted to your videos for about a month now. Love them! Recently, I've gone to a few Goodwill' in Cedar Park (a suburb of Austin) and I can tell you that we do NOT have the abundance of antique and vintage things that you have in PA. No German or Czech pottery, or anything worth anything. Just junk with a few things of interest. I plan on going to an antique mall soon so compare what I see in your videos. I'll let you know. And we don't have flea markets like you have (darn it). Everything is Mexican (pinatas, frilly girl dresses, etc). And the Goodwill Outlet (bins) is a WHOLE different experience down here. People from Mexico park their carts along the back wall and stay there all day. When the new bins come out, they line up waiting to pounce, which they do. I've seen two men get in a struggling match over a lamp. It's a bit intimidating and feels like a free-for-all. Not fun.

I stitched the crewel work picture and the 2 smaller ones twice in the late ‘70’s. I guess that makes them vintage, like me! I gave one set to my Mom who proudly displayed them in her living room and sold the other’s to an acquaintance. Arthritis has made it impossible for me to do any hand work, too bad because it was a great stress reliever . So glad you picked it up, Joselyn 💞

I bought some amazing things that day buy I don't sell anything. I keep it all. Also, do u check for old Fisher price toys? I have one from the 50s that they only made one Year for Easter. It's amazing. Happy hunting.
