I've honestly just kept my collection logged by taking pictures of the shelves and putting them in a discord channel since I started, while counting them up and updating the total number every so often. Its also neat to scroll through from the beginning and see how it grew over time.

You should probably just first scan it into a csv file (excel) anyway. You can then import the file to libbib and/or potentially any other google sheet or other system that comes around later.

Seems like the system isn't perfect and in need of some fine tuning, but definitely really cool- I'd be interested to see a video of you trying out more methods/programs and maybe listing out the pros and cons of each one. I've never kept track of my collection via excel or anything because it all seemed too cumbersome, I still go by memory and double checking my shelves if I'm unsure.

Thanks for your honest review and feedback!
You can export your items as a .CSV file (the file will include the ISBN numbers) by going to Settings > Collections > Export a Collection

When I made this video too it changed made tracking easier. I bought the scanner since it was way faster than the phone camera scanning. Liblib is great(ish) and what I use cause there is no way I am doing a google spreadsheet etc. It takes 100000% less time even fixing titles and adding art then if I made a manual spreadsheet and had to keep updating it. BUT its not perfect. One thing I did was made a box set category for all of them and then scanned the volumes separately. I am 4k+ manga in on mine and maybe had to fix/add like 30 volumes so its working and better than nothing. Mainly used it for insurance purposes so it works lol.

I just use my notes app. It’s very simple though, has the total series I’ve watched/read. Lists if I read the manga or watched only the anime, caught up to manga, dropped/completed etc. what chapter/episode I left off on. Total volume count I counted a long time ago(annoying) lol. Any time I get a new volume I log it into the app.
When it comes to accidentally buying dupe volumes or not knowing which ones you need, I have another notes tab that lists every up coming new volume I need or a new debut series Vol 1 I’m interested by the cost, month, day & vol #. When it comes to completed series I already know what I need because the majority of the time I collect in bulk.

I use the Bookshelf app on my phone but it runs into the same issues you did. So maybe they are pulling their info from the same place in the internet so maybe that is where the issue lies and not with the apps themselves.

Libib users, a little tip if you have older Tokyo Pop series you trying to scan, don't scan the barcode on the back. Flip the cover page and on the back there is a barcode that will scan and register :)

I use both libib and wakoom since i get different stats in the different apps, wakoom can’t use the scanner but it groups series together so you can bulk add and it counts them as individual books, libib you can export your data onto a spreadsheet so you don’t have to manually type it all and you can manipulate it from there.

Libib has been such a great tool for manga collecting. The japanese volumes and older OOP gets a bit messy HOWEVER, the editing feature is pretty solid. Some older series I CHOSE to manually change the covers, and sometimes if you get a super new release Libib may not have it in their system yet; rare, but does happen. Solid system! I use it for my anime, comics, and video games too!

  • @NeverAskedtobeMade1390

I use libib for my manga collection and use a scanner. It doesn't always work and I've run into problems with oop, Japanese, and sometimes even new releases, but I don't really mind manually fixing those issues. It's just tedious, especially during the initial adding of my collection. I don't mind the volumes not condensing, but it does get annoying when I'm trying to find something else in that category. All in all, libib is far from perfect, but it works for me :) Plus playing with the scanner is fun lol
I have a spreadsheet as well, and neither that nor libib is ever fully up to date. But between the two, I have everything logged. Probably should work on keeping them both up to date given I've been buying a lot of duplicates lately 😅

Stopping at 4:05 because you're just kinda figuring things out, so a couple clarifications for you/your viewers:
    1. The barcode scanner only reads 2D (maybe 3D, aka QR) codes and inputs them to the computer. That's all it's doing. It's a deceptively simple device. Fun fact: you can make barcodes, now that you have a scanner, and you can use the scanner to quickly input things. Sky's the limit!
    2. You don't OWN that site, so therefore, if they go under, your information does, too. I see what you want to do, and as someone with maybe 1/4 to 1/3 the manga you have, I want to do it, too. I have a few solutions, but the best is going to be a database that you control. These aren't easy to set up, but you get out what you put in, and you can set all the categories you want. I like to know if it's mine or my wife's, if it's been adapted to anime, if the anime has been translated to English (aka Dubbed), if I've watched the anime, etc., just for easy searching.
AFAIK there's no best way to catalogue manga. My wife just uses a note on her phone, but she doesn't update it religiously and ends up re-buying stuff. Honestly I just sprung for a Shonen Jump sub ($1.99/month) and I stick to digital, mostly. Also using Manga Plus at the free tier, so far so good.
