Broken Part 3: Living with a Brain Injury
Vložit
- čas přidán 12. 11. 2016
- In New Zealand 36,000 people suffer a traumatic brain injury every year. The most common cause is falls, followed by accidents. The most severe go to ABI Rehabilitation where a team of experts support people with brain injuries back into the community.
Terry is learning to walk and starting to recall what happened to him. Eltje is preparing to go home. Fifteen year-old Jarrod was playing basketball when he collapsed and had a heart attack. He survived, but because his brain was starved of oxygen he must learn to talk, read and write once again.

Eltje gave me chills. She is the DEFINITION of determination. She has truly inspired me to fight to have the best life possible and to achieve my goals. Terry and Jarrod are amazing as well.
Hope you enjoyed this episode Jaii!
Jaii Rela I agree, couldn't have said it better! She too is inspiring to me.
MzClementine
Paulina Turek and here I am to get my inspiration again. I am not doing well. My malrotated kidney is giving me more problems than I can count. So very excited though...
I’m about to go to Cleveland Clinic! I have EDS VEDS and possibly Nutcrackers Syndrome with SMAS and Pelvic congestion issues. Many doctors looked at me like I was nuts. Over and over fighting insurance and trying to get a doctor that would test me and also listen to me. I got my EDS tests! And yes I was right!!!!!! Now with my kidney I deny pain medication because I’d rather live in horrible pain than to be looked at as a pain pill chaser. I’m not playing around anymore and if a doctor like my X Nephrologist that told me impossible and wouldn’t even touch my kidney... or listen to my history. Fired! Finally got my urologist appointment after 6moths of seeing my GP he was shocked when he heard the nephrologist would not recommended a urologist and told me impossible. I told him he was fired and I never care to see him. If he would please please send me to a urologist or I’ll find another GP.
Well I finally got the appointment and waited 3 months for that. He listened and knew where my “transverse malrotated kidney is!” Under my left ribs. It’s twisted and only has one area where it filters my uttter goes around my kidney and I’ve had an 11.9 a 5.7 and a 8.2 mm kidney stones all calcium. The other kidney has never had any. I told him I have a problem with drainage and I have spasms. I don’t have an oxalate problem! This is related to my EDS and VEDS and I need help! Please! Gave him the full rundown and after he listened I do need surgery and I very well could have Nutcrackers Syndrome with digestion issues and pelvic congestion, especially since my kidney was where it was and rotated!
This woman got me motivated to stop reevaluate and not be pushed around by doctors!
She gave me a push of determination! I needed that! Because my body is failing me and life is passing by!
I’m a happy good spirited person. And have my nutrition in check. And that I would say helps with my positive outlook. Yet over and over I get pushed aside and I just was upset 😡 with our medical society!
I even said to the Nephrologist when I left. You may have spent thousands of hours and dollars on your knowledge but I am a rarity that you could learn from yet you mock me but you think I’m lying. I simply got up and said your fired. I’ll see my GP.
Yay! My appointment for Cleveland Clinic is in 2 weeks! I’m over the moon! And in bad need of their help!
It’s really hard when you want to do something and have the mind to do it but cannot. If I’m on my feet for 6 hours. I’m in bed for 4 days. It’s so annoying! Who wants to live with left side constant pain! From my kidney to my pelvic. Walking is a nightmare! On top of my subluxations and brushing and joint problems... and more... Omgoodness it’s awful!
This gem of a woman, put a fire under my bottom and gave me inspiration to get this done!
To all those Dr.’s that didn’t believe me... I could say something nasty... yet... the universe will show them one day. They will have a patient and they will be way wrong again... and know this... oh yes. Life has a way of handing back what we put out! So I wish them well!
🤔😀🧐🙌🏻✌🏻🖐🏻
@@MzClementine ?okkkk. Well glad your seeing a doc .......
The lady that had a bicycle accident is inspirational truly. She has given me motivation to do more. Her determination is captivating.
Eltje's speech to the workers was so heart warming, as a care worker myself I can attest that those moments are the reason we do the work.
Thanks for the support Kate! we're glad to have such caring individuals as yourself!
Eltje is so inspiring and with her determination I'm positive she will eventually be able to cycle professionally. Her strength is marvelous and I hope she is progressing. Such a wonderful and strong willed woman. God bless from England.
She’s like the cool aunt everyone wished they had.
Everyone talking about eltje but can someone notice Jason? Model brother. Brother of the year
I worked with TBI survivors for nearly 17 years. Thank you for sharing these videos.
Was crying at the end. She's so kind!
Glad you found it so touching Jennifer! Thanks for watching!
I want to thank you fine people at Attitude for these wonderful documentaries. Really gives you perspective, plus they are very informative.

UR SO RIGHT!!!!
Huge respect for the specialists who help to rehabilitate these people. They are foing an amazing job
Eltje you LEGEND. Just sheer determination and to go through rehab without family and whanau from Germany is just amazing. God speed Eltje!!
Eltje on the bike made me cry - with happiness for her! Thanks for the uploads x
Thanks for watching Eileen!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one crying!
Hope you enjoyed Hannah!
Attitude I'm so grateful her whole-story that has been shared. Some documentaries will explain a persons life and the difficulties of their experience in path and it ends. Not knowing how they are or what has happened drives me to search for them and to finish out their story. It's like reading a really good book only to find the rest of the chapters are nothing more than white pages, and the book became a special print book or hard to find. No ISBN can help if there isn't an original copy. 🤔😥😑 So thanks dearly for this next chapter. Seeing her determination and her will to heal along with all others within this series chapter is so inspiring and rewarding to witness. Her will feeds my heart and soul! I hope she is doing well. I feel she has inspired many others that have watched this documentary. How amazing is that?! One man or woman's suffering leading and inspiring others within the ups and downs of their own lives. To me, it's... Pure magic!!!
Eltje, you are a hero and an inspiration! Love to you from the United States. 😀💜
Thanks for your kind words Erin!
You go Eltje. Rooting for you from Fairbanks Alaska
Here,here!!!
I’m watching this series to understand more about the future for a two year old who survived drowning.
You have been assigned this mountain to show others that it can be moved.
Thank you for these videos. My son has a TBI from August 16, 2009. It's very hard for people to understand how different life is afterwards. My son hasn't improved as much as these folks but it goes a long way toward educating the public. I would like to have seen a bit more about the rage part of the injury but as has been communicated, every TBI is different. I'm only half way through Part 3 but I also hope there will be more focus on the tole TBI takes on the caregiver. Thank you for bringing this to light.
Thanks for sharing Elana, we hope you found this series of some use.
Please see Bart Foundation on youtube for more ideas
@Attitude covering the rage some people who have TBI would be a good idea.
Eltje , you have inspired me as I'm going through a very hard time in my life. I kept myself in my safe bubble, my bed, for the past three weeks ... I'm so thankful I've came to watch this series. I wish with all my heart that you enjoy your rides and for all the other patients to get well soon and have a prosperous lives.
Thanks for watching Rocky Abduljabar, wishing you all the best on your journey 😊
Rocky Abduljabar me 2
Eltje is so amazing.. her sheer determination is something we could all learn by. I was so happy when she got on the bike. And her leaving speech had me in tears. I love Terry too.. he talks like a typical Kiwi bloke! He's made amazing strides too.. was very worried about him in the first episode, but he's definitely coming along. This series is so amazing, as is your whole channel. I'm so pleased I found it!
She is an amazing woman! Glad to hear you enjoyed the series!
So is jared
Wow, have watched all five and cried. The incredible staff at ABI rehab I take my hat off to you guys. The amount of time and effort you put in to help. Everyone's a survivor just enjoyed seeing how each have improved oh please show more. Would love to see how Eltje is doing she is a champ.
Thanks for watching the series Lee! Glad to hear you enjoyed the documentaries 😀
Fantastic video! It's interesting to see how health systems in other countries work compared to here in the USA. An injury like this has the potential to bankrupt you in this country. These families are SO lucky they don't have to worry about getting help from friends/family, selling their home or having a fundraiser to come up with lots of $$ to pay for all the things your health insurance doesn't/won't cover and the massive hospital bills that will result from treating a TBI. Now that's a video that people who don't live in the USA should see.
Thanks for watching ! Hope you enjoyed!
They also don’t have to worry about being kicked out of rehab after 6 weeks like the USA!
I love how they brought different ages cause age really matter when it comes to a brain injury
I remember watching this series when my mum was in ICU I was hopeless and I needed people with similar condition as mum
It been 5 months now since my mum’s injury she’s walking with assistance she still have problems with balance and they removed part of her skull temporarily I can’t wait for things to get better and I wish we had more knowledge about brain stroke and injuries cause every second counts
Glad we could help you Entesar Alfayez all the best 😊
Eltje and Terry’s progress brought me to tears so happy for them both 🤗 makes you appreciate your own health and just how fragile we are as human beings 💗🤗
My mom (she’s 50 years old) just suffered a massive stroke , 02/11/18 Neurologist said it was equivalent to having 20 smalls strokes all at one time. they thought she wouldn’t be here and she’s proving every one wrong GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY ! she’s in rehab now so only God and time can heal! i’m watching this for comfort and to get some more knowledge on how I can help her!
I came across Attitude's videos tonight by accident and I'm glad I did. These videos are so inspiring! Thanks for the great job!
Awesome! We're glad you found our videos so inspiring!
Eltje, we don’t know each other, but I highly appreciate your determination, your courage. You teach me to count my blessings rather than being depressed or bitter about difficulties in my life. You and patients like you give me hope in life.
the lady’s fighting spirit is a whole new level💪🏼🙌🏼🙏🏼
It amazes me that some people go without oxygen for 30 minutes and have no ill effects, while others lose air for 8 minutes and have severe permanent damage.
The brain is certainly a very complex thing!
Who went without oxygen for 30 minutes and survived? That doesn't sound like a thing
Khaledyah In this case it's the icy water. It's slows down the metabolic rate. Almost allowing the cells to stay in a suspended stable state. Her age also. The younger the person is the healing of the brain as the brain grows with new pathways and electrical connections within the stimulation of the Vagus Nerve is key to healing better than others with the same injury. Plus it's all how we are wired together. Genetics plays a role within this process, and how the body processes nutrients too. Someone with the MTHFR gene would have a difficult time with methylation. Which can affect the process of die of of toxins and the body accumulating to many toxins. Many roles play within the healing of the brain and nervous system. Diet helps immensely too along with immediate rehabilitation. I'm so impressed with this rehabilitation center. They are spot on within their therapy of working with them right away once the body stabilizes. Warms my heart! Hope your day or eve has been good to you 😉✌🏻💚
There's nothing God can't do. My daughter 6 years old had a cardiac arrest and they did cpr for at least 5 hours on her. She's alive. Praise the Lord. She's here with us because God intervened 🙏🏾.
eltje riding the bike made me CRY. she’s such a lovely women i wish the best for her and all of the people with TBIs
Attitude: I saw you uploaded this in 2016. I hope people continue to view this. As someone who suffered a brain injury this brought tears to my eyes. I hope all of you people in the video get better and better. I thought I made a full recovery after a fall, but deep down I know that's not true. There are some things I have absolutely no memory of. When someone mentions things I can't remember, when I should remember them, I have started to write them down. This is when I realised how different I am to before. I have no memory whatsoever of my youngest son's Christening, for example. Unless somebody mentions certain things I can't be sure if I've forgotten them or not. That's Catch 22 and kind of crazy! I can't remember some people either, I mean we all have problems sometimes recognising a face, but it's really embarrassing and I find myself having to apologise. People can't comprehend that you've just completely forgotten them and they say it's impossible because we knew one another pretty well. I have to make my excuses and leave because it's dreadful having to explain. It's the sort of thing that happens at the beginning of films.
Praying for a continual recovery for you. You have come further than you know, and reading your comment has given me the encouragement I need! 🙏✝️💕
Hope you've continued to make strides in your recovery . don't ever feel like you have to apologise to anyone.
They should be more understanding that you're not doing it on purpose.
I REALLY HOPE YOU HAVE A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE AND MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE 😊 LOVE FROM THE UK
@vickythefist7062 Hiya Vicky, thank you so much for your reply. I often think nobody cares, and then you yourself, as well as one other person completely unknown to me, restore my faith in humankind. Kind if the right word, because this is pure, unadulterated kindness. To wish me all the very best and make life-affirming comments to boot - well that's so much appreciated. I'm British too, although the accident happened overseas. It brought me back here where I was finally diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN2) -also known, you're probably aware, as the Suicide Disease. The pain was so bad I went for x-rays to check I hadn't broken my neck. Honestly, you don't know how much both of your comments have given me an uplift. I have that second chance, but for a long while I was lost. People's attitudes didn't help, because it was undiagnosable for so long there were some that thought I was just mad - well, there's no other way to put it. Please know how much your words have affected me in a really good way. You must have a really kind heart. If everyone were the same, the world would be a much better place. Grateful isn't enough of a word to describe how much you've elevated my mood and thankfulness. Bless you, you're a real sweetheart. In return to your comment, and without wishing to sound creepy, I send you some love. From Jonathan
@@hippodagogo Hello hippodagogo. I read: "your comment has given me the encouragement I need!" I would gather from reading this that you too have suffered from an injury and I thank you for your prayers - something that I do all the time is say my prayers and thank the Lord. I don't know what your situation is or what you've been diagnosed with, but I've started to write a book about my own experience which has as its major goal the idea to help others. If it's TM as a result of trauma it's very hard to diagnose. Head injuries are catastrophic, and the worst thing is people can't tell, but sooner or later you give it away one way or another - after you've been accused of being drunk, or on drugs, or just plain stupid. I don't comment often, and seldom read the comments, but please read my other reply because when I say your words help me, like you've said to me, that my comment has given you encouragement, then I'm indebted to you both . I hope you get well, or get better, just knowing we're not in this horrible situation alone is a help- to me, at least. I send you some love, just as I did to vickythefist, because with more of it to go around, we would all benefit.

Gratitude is a living memory, which perhaps will even be the strongest help for her recovery. Appreciating what she has instead of grumbling about what she had… her friend by her side, a team that is encouraged by her motivation and a desire to overcome ‘disability’ are certainly good reasons to be grateful.
Eltje is fighting like her life depends on it, and she refuses to give up. If anyone deserves to make a strong recovery, based on the work she is putting in. It's her. I wish her all the best and that her story inspires and helps others
In another vidoe Jared Turns out very well. And growing stronger every day.
Over the past 12 years I have had so many surgeries and diagnosis. Thankfully not my brain although I forget a lot. Watching this has made me decide I too can break the cycle and hopefully improve my physical function. Thank you for the information 🤔❤️🇺🇸
The rate at which Terry progressed was astounding, it was like a switch flipped in his mind. So astounding the work that these people do, and the effort the clients put in.
Eltje is absolutely incredible! Everyone, from the patients and their families/friends to the doctors, therapists and all involved in making this series happen are all brave heroes in my eyes and incredibly inspirational. Thank you so much for sharing the journey to recovery of these amazing, brave people!
watt an amazing woman to be positive about her brain injury and she is doing very well with her disability
Oh! She got back on her bike! Love it!
Hope you enjoyed this episode Angela! Thanks for watching!
I was so lucky. I hit my head in car accident 20 years ago but got no brain injury. I am incredibly sorry for what these people are going through.
This is so inspiring! Hope everyone is able to fully recover and get back to their meaningful lives. Recovery from anything is difficult no matter what it is. Love this series!!
Hope you enjoyed the episode ! Thanks for watching!
eltje what a strong determined lady, inspiring
I'd like to see more. Great series.
Thanks Dara! We have more episodes in this series coming out over the next couple of weeks - subscribe and stay tuned!
Vielen Dank an alle Mitarbeiter von Attitude für diese unglaubliche Dokumentarserie! Eltje ist meine Heldin!
Awesome series of documentary by attitude...Eltje is so strong and she is the best example of determination every one should have ...Also great work by AVI team and attitude, it takes a lot to create this kind of documentary ...Kudos to you guys...
Thanks for watching Viral Patel, hope you enjoyed!
It's so cool to see Terry's progression and Eltje's determination. Gosh, they warm my heart.
Oh guys, i saw all the videos, i wish the best for all of them, their families and the people working in the center to get the most out of every single patient. Blessings to every one.
Etjle is an amazing woman! 🙏❤️ I hope she is able to continue her passion!
Outstanding series, thankyou.
Thanks Bec - hope you enjoyed and stay tuned!
What about the behaviours and traits after TBI... hope all these folks are hanging in there... and 🧢 off to the staff 😊
WOW THESE PATIENTS ARE SOOO AMAZING!!! God bless u all and may u continue doing better everyday.
You guys did jarrod dirty for filming him snoring lmao
My goodness these people are so inspiring. I have a rare condition that affects 1% of the population, and I'm able to do a lot on my own in comparison but I definitely don't have that fighting spirit. These people are amazing.
Thank you Mikoto! May I ask what your condition is?
It's Vertebrobasilar Migraines, I'm affected 24/7 by intense vertigo and haven't been able to see straight lines or solid vision in 4 years now, it's really unpleasant I won't lie, there's no real treatment either - I want the will power of these people! In time maybe I'll too be okay with healing and not dwelling on my previous abilities in life
The rehabilitation facility is amazing! I wish we had something similar in Austria. That woul be my dreamjob as an SLP
Hope you enjoyed the episode Maggie! Thanks for watching!😀
Bless you all from headway nottingham united kingdom x
Bless all of you at Headway in the UK. I had TN2 after an accident and the worst thing was it was never diagnosed. At least Headway rang me up and spoke to me. I had nobody to talk to and my doctor thought I just had depression. From what my friend told me and explained to me about his symptoms he had Trigeminal Neuralgia at the same time. He was never diagnosed and even told Mental Health Services "I feel like throwing myself off a bridge." (A matter of record.) He succeeded on his second attempt at suicide a few days later.
Hello Deb ✨ 🌷
Brotherly love
I see there are 2 dislikes here. why?? well to them I say this. before you go and dislike anything like this, imagine this was you living like this with a very serious brain injury, all the trauma, all the pain, probably memory loss due to your injury, all the hurt not being able to do any sport, not being able to do anything you loved to do before all this happened. just imagine it. how would you feel?? how would your family feel?? I would imagine they would be worried, very worried. They would know you would need help for the rest of your life most likely. My friend was in a very serious car accident and yes he suffered a very bad brain injury. I know he will be like this, the way he now is till the day he dies.... He cant help it the way he is. He used to be so much into football but sadly he now cannot play it no more as a sport, as a result of his brain injury he endured.
Thanks for the support and caring words, he is still an amazing young man!! we hope you enjoyed the video!
I am sure he is an amazing person. He seems like it from this video. :-)
Why do they wear the gloves and gowns? Even the family? It's not like brain injury is contagious but they obviously do it for a good reason but I have no idea why.
SubstanceD91 so the patients don't catch any illnesses the staff/family could bring in from outside. it could prolong the healing process.
He might have gotten a temporary infection and they didn’t want to pass it on to other patients
great documentaries!
Thanks for watching! We are very proud to be able to film with these amazing people and share their stories! Hope you stay tuned!

People with tbi or any suffering stay strong and don't let negative thoughts work on you ✨ 🙏🏻 💝
gosh that was amazing
Thanks for your kind words, hope you enjoyed!
They are all blessed.. Angels👼 .. Fighters
I think it was a huge mistake that the doctor told her that he thought she wouldn’t cycle again not like she did she might be able to do a 3 wheel or modified bike. Honestly the only thing that’s gotten her this far is her hope for her independence back and the hope that she will cycle once again which is the love of her life. The doctor taking that hope away is the dumbest thing ever even if it might be true or it’s his opinion that’s what will happen, it’s not worth taking away the Indy love of her lie she has and the one thing giving her the hope and courage to drive herself forward. I mean if he thinks she won’t ride again on a normal bike I;s like for him to think about what level her brain injury was it is the one that they rarely see anyone come back from but she’s fought her way back with the motivation, hope, and love for cycling they need to keep that hope alive within her.
God Bless You All XOXO
what of Te kaha how is he doing?
Ellje's you are so inspiring.
Can't wait to. See you ride again.
Great channel!
Thanks for watching! We are very proud to be able to film with these amazing people and share their stories! Hope you stay tuned!
Attitude I am definitely subscribed, anticipating new content.

It's strange how they didn't seem to do any sort of Walking at all with Eltje? My spidey senses are telling me she may have over-stepped the mark a little by saying she wants x, and y, and z! I know from my own personal experience, medical professionals do not like being told what to do!! :D
Of course my theory may be totally wrong. Perhaps it was just that she didn't need much assistance in terms of re-learning to walk, or maybe it was just that we didn't get to see those parts.
God bless you. Amen
Lovely video guys from Ruth 😀
Eltje. She is incredible. That's all.
That Honda Prelude is legit. I own one myself.
Love Eltje she's a trooper!
Haha best comment! Thanks for watching!
Well you got a tbi n tht really sucks and you’re gonna need a great family and they need to be good people but at least the ptgirl is pretty
Is eltje married cuz her personality just makes me feel so in love..she deserves someone who sees that brilliance in her.
My lord. These amazing people! Jared's brother with him 😭
Well I can say I had a severe tbi in2021 I think I got very lucky to have it when I was 27 but I can’t smell smell or taste really
Has a bicycle accident that leaves her severely brain damaged….but still can’t let go of cycling.
WTF?
Some people never learn. 🤦♂️
Is it just me or the kids wheezing was making him look more sick than he is?
This is the reason l stopped cycling
Poor Jarrod
Horrible that somebody would do that to this woman!!!
He is exhausted.
We are all TBI Warriors!!
I’m in abi resources shout out to abi resources and shout out to all my guys
Wow I feel sorry for Jared, sudden heart attack at 15
fighters
❤️❤️❤️
gatting rehab is yhe though partan live is hardnow that i need care
its okay sweetheart
I am in Pakistan, my age is twenty years old, my childhood is very bad, my father was very bad, he had to be afraid of the little things, when the dead boy was killed in the mind, then the dead body was killed, but it was a bitter tension, after the fever, my body, and the first time I have to do, but the video does not hear anything, but it does not mean anything, but it does not mean anything, but it does not come to know, but nothing does not come to know the same, but it does not come to know the same, but it does not come to know the same as well, but it does not come to know, but it does not come to know however, it does not matter anything, but it does not come to know, but if it does not feel anything even if the body has become very deep, but it does not come to know, but the understanding of my mind, but the same time, but the video has changed a little bit of death. "
What's wrong with Jarrod's breathing?
ELTJE 💕
Will he get a new heart?
