Defining housing justice: struggles from London, UK

- London’s residents are under threat as never before. Council tenants are being forced out of their homes due to estate renewal, welfare reforms and poverty.
In this short film, a variety of Londoners facing different issues around housing discuss their definitions of housing justice. A safe, affordable place to live is a human right - but increasingly difficult to access.
This video was produced by members of Housing Rebellion, a collective within Extinction Rebellion based in London, that calls for the refurbishment rather than the demotion of council estates. Their campaigns and direct actions are connecting various London-based housing groups, bringing together calls for climate justice with housing justice.
This is part of a number of short films produced for a series of housing justice exchanges convened by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Debo Adegoke represented Housing Rebellion in these exchanges.

Many of the people in the video persuaded me that we should end all social housing. Congrats.
Some seem to have a delusion that once nurtured and parented in a dwelling, society is obligated to keep them nurtured and parented as a child indefinitely. That may be their perspective, but it's not a functioning society, because it implies a 'parent' role from a real parent to a government role that doesn't exist. No where in nature does a child when born can direct all adults to care and feed them over a lifetime because that would mean no one would be left to provide and all would simply stay and wait for someone to house and feed them. No society can function like that, or one that lasts any length of time.. Many of these people don't talk about transitioning to 'providers' of housing (either for themselves or for others in addition to themselves) as if they are fictional with unlimited resources.
I agree with this statement. It’s no one else’s job to look after me. Now it’s my turn - that’s part of growing up… and if you want to ‘better’ your situation you work hard and reap the rewards
I had to wait over 2 years in a hotel until I got a flat last December.the migrants in the same hotel were complaining that they had to wait 4months, I worked 2 jobs the whole time I was there (still do have 2 jobs) and had to pay just over £1000 every month for the shared room i was in.only the migrants got their room for free, and their food, but still went begging all over the city, with ALL of them claiming to need money for kids they didn't have. karma will get these 'people'.till then though behaving like they do should get them a nice comfy little cage at the zoo
'Karma' absolutely not get people, they've already hit the jackpot.
yeah but you are still a scrounger on benefits.
@@mikefish8226 I can understand your cinicism but people can't keep doing what they do and keep getting away with it,change is coming (real change) and the greed of the migrants will bite them in the arse and whatever genuine need they do have will be ignored because they've went to the well to many times, right now the only thing we DO still have is this is OUR country and we are still a vast majority so things still aren't past the point of no return.if our elected officials won't do anything then we will do it ourselves,my point being that these greedy bastard's can and will be stopped, their gravy train will be derailed
Move out if London, rent privately. Sick of seeing council houses with two Mercedes and a brand new range river outside. Minorities are over represented in the council house market and that needs changing
1.25 - ‘What is my notion of for housing justice for me is eradicating the concept of landlordism and ending capitalism. Fight capitalism, and homes that are OWNED by people for the people.’
Why are foreigners talking about overthrowing out country and economy?
The world don’t owe you, you owe the world love peace friendly etc all God gave you for free!
And give every home a back up power supply one nation they need to think like this tell your mp🙏🌎
To that black guy l dont need the council or government to take care of me. I work and can take csre of myself
I think you miss the point.
@@icilmaa Nope.
A non-native should not be sponging off the government.
@@HaggisMuncher-69-420 You're still missing the point.
Immigrant's demanding free homes, how many were here during the blitz?
All new social housing should be banned from the open market permanently. This would encourage developers to build more as social housing would not negatively affect house prices.
It seems that for urban areas repurposed office blocks could eleviate housing shortages quickly.
I live in West Cornwall we have far too many residential properties used for tourism rather than as homes, we dont have that much space to build on and the tallest building allowed is 3 storeys high normally
