This seems less like an unskilled driver problem and more like a truck driver not doing his pre trip at all problem.
When you're going 300 on public roads you ARE an unskilled driver.
You have to know anything unexpected could happen any minute and with that speed you couldn't do shit about it. That speed at night...just idiotic...and not legal in germany btw, because law expects you to adapt your speed according to circumstances.
The way I see it. At that kind of speed the car becomes critical. Almost anything can cause it to lose control. Instead of a truck without taillights it could have been a stray dog and the same thing would have happened. Driving that fast at night was suicide, end of story.

Btw.: Driving that fast isn't legal in germany, too. There my be no general speed limit on parts on the autobahn, but you are always expected to adapt your speed according to the circumstances and so you don't endanger others. No judge would ever side with a wannabe racing driver driving that fast on a public road when it's dark.
