  • The Fiat 500X is the latest addition to the growing 500 range. Its good looking and promises economy with space to stretch out, however, what's it like on the road?
The Fiat 500x is a stylish addition to the crossover class and will definitely appeal to a wide range of buyers, offering some stiff competition to the likes of the Nissan Juke, the Renault Captur and the MINI Countryman.
Theres no doubt the retro Fiat 500 (DLGC) has been an outstanding success for Fiat and it’s no wonder they are desperate to stretch the car’s appeal to more models and a larger target market. Fiat hopes this new 500X will strike the right balance of being an up-scaled 500 but also a credible crossover in its own right.
Under the bonnet, the most significant changes include the introduction of two new turbocharged 'Firefly' petrol engines, a three-cylinder 118bhp 1.0-litre and 148bhp 1.3-litre automatic, which replaced the entry-level 108bhp 1.6-litre E-Torq in the engine range. Its a welcome note to learn that Fiat no longer offers a diesel engine variant for the 500X.
Trim levels now consist of Urban, City Cross, and Sport, none of which are poorly equipped. Urban trim includes air-conditioning, cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels and a seven-inch Uconnect infotainment system with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The City Cross comes with cornering front fog lights, body-coloured door mirrors, satin chrome door handles and a 3.5-inch digital instrument cluster.and the range-topping 500X Sport adds a dual chrome exhaust, Alcantara interior materials, black 18-inch wheels and sportier bumpers.

Owned one for two years, 1.3 148bhp, dct. Very quick and totally reliable. Not one problem. A pleasure to own and drive. Tekna green, looks the dogs, in case you're interested. Great review, unbiased and positive, which this vehicle thoroughly deserves. Cheers.

Absolutely great review. I got this car this year and it’s a fantastic car. I got the 1.3 DCT auto and its such a pleasure to drive. So comfortable as well. The anti collision system is spot on and as given me advance warning when one guy just randomly stopped on a 50mph dual carriageway. It reacted so fast. Lane departure system is also not as severe as others and is just right. And its a striking car. Very pleased with it and hope to have it a fair few years.

The X in the centre console is a blank where the cross plus driving mode selectors go. Sport must not have that feature.
The upper glove box is a drinks chiller. There is an air vent in there that when open streams cold air supply to the insulated top box to keep your bevvies at that chilled temperature.
The vehicle keyless entry is passive like a Land Rover, also keyless lock using the handle button externally (maybe only a cross plus option)
The boot is dual level and drops lower when you lift and lower the floor helping you add luggage space. Or lifting it to allow you somewhere to store your valuables out of sight like laptops etc if you remove the parcel shelf, which fits in the lower well.
The rear view mirror has anti blind button to dull bright lights on main beam from the rear.
They also have Mopar Connect on your centre touch screen. It connects to your phone and finds your vehicle in a large car park and flashes the hazards etc, you programme it to tell you when tyres need inflating your eco trip settings and allows digital radio and music streaming Twitter and Reddit and News podcasts and the like etc. Tonnes of features.
Fiat also apparently don’t know this. They think the green and red call buttons just answer and hang up on calls. If you press the speech/green call button and specifically say the word phone/call whichever it says on your specific model control screen it voice activates call mode, hands free dialling and calling contacts etc.
The Mopar Uconnect feature also allows you to programme settings for family users. So if you have a teen taking out the car you can limit the speed to 60 for example.
Hope these help anyone a few things I’ve learned after owning one for a while even though mine is a 2015 500x they probably have tonnes more features now.
You can change the colour of your vehicle in the centre clock display above your steering wheel as well to match the colour of your car etc. 👍
Only learned this recently too but the Jeep Renegade is built on the same platform as the 500x and have the same internal button designs to dash etc. Also Fiat own 50%+ share over Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, Lancia, Maserati, Jeep and Ram. Not forgetting Ferrari. So next time you’re out in your Fiat just remember your driving a brand with a lions share of Ferrari so you’re driving their vehicle in principle 🤣🤣

The owner’s manual is for remote places where you might get stuck with little or no internet connection. It’s just a centimeter thick booklet… Just put it on the back, where the tire is.

The wife had the 1litre 500x and to be honest it did struggle on the motorway but brilliant around town we've part ex it for the 500x sport with the 4 cylinder 9 speed automatic and OMG I have a 2019 focus st and the fiat leaves it for dust in the power department and quality of build👍 the little x badge in the centre console is were the 4wd system used to go before fiat ditched it! Don't know if you can still get it though on special request? It's a great car!

Hello, 10:00 in the older models it had a drive selecter between sport, eco and wet. Newer models scrapped it and the sport didn’t need it. So they just put a plastic filler rather than make a new part.

Thoroughly enjoyed your humor and how you presented your verdict on the car(Thumbs up). I purchased a 2017 500x cross plus 4x4 in Venezia Blue, petrol 1.4 turbo,9 speed auto two months ago and so far I'm really impressed with it. I px my daily Jag XJ X350 against it and wasn't so sure how I'd get on as even the Jag being a 54 plate there were no creaks or rattles and it really was a pretty quiet relaxed drive. It's a completely different change and so far no regrets,I've got 18" rims on mine which many reviews say makes it an unpleasant ride but for me running a TVR T350t it's like a limo compared to that but air suspension Jag comfort it's not.
My Fiat came with so many goodies I was actually shocked as at a car at this price point to have heated elec seats/heated steering wheel/blind spot warning/lane departure etc is quite something but then again I drive TVR's and an old Jag so things have moved on. On mine as has already been pointed out I have 3 modes to select and most the time I've been in auto/eco mode and just selected 4x4 option once but the sport mode really does give it a kick and i'm pretty sure the exhaust note changes, steering becomes a bit more solid and have to say it corners really well and at Motorway speeds it's all pretty refined. Also read mainly from car journalists that the 9 speed auto that I have is terrible but again I can't fault it other than at 70-75 it doesn't go into 9th when in auto drive but if you flick it to manual transmission then you can apply it at about 65-68 mph.
    Once again loved your presentation.
