  • Some process of my Hand Drawn Rough 2D Animation shot "The Shield."
    Some people were asking for roughs of this shot to see the process a bit, and here is what I was able to dig up.
    There is some live action reference that I filmed first, followed by the first rough version in which everything having been mostly worked out (after many revisions). After that I realized tying down from that version would be pretty difficult so I wanted to have something closer to the final model while I fleshed out the cape/punches more. After that is the final tie down.
    There is a lot I would like to change if I could go back and do it again, but I learned a lot on this shot as it was pretty challenging, but a lot of fun all the same.
    Also the timing charts were more notes for myself and I wouldn't recommend using them to learn from as things changed timing wise and I don't believe they were updated.
    Thanks for checking out the video!

    Holy hell I love it. No wonder the physics in this piece felt so grounded, especially the follow-through on that cape! Awesome choice for a progression shot, thanks for putting together. Also your video reference had me rolling because out of context it's just a guy going nuts in his living room 😂

    Cool animation but I feel like if they had the dexterity to shoot the staff out of his hand, they would have just hit him with an arrow before he could finish making the shield. The shield making process looks very cool and intricate but would look more practical if done faster/ in less steps.

    • @KelanHordos
      @KelanHordos  Před rokem +4

      There is certainly some suspension of belief required! It's always good to hear how things come across, and I think you're points are things I also thought about at the time, but ultimately the purpose was more having a concept and using it to learn to animate. If I recall correctly I think the original idea was not so much that they shot the staff out purposefully but that it was more of a lucky shot for the sake of setting things up for the rest of the shot. At some point I had some of the arrows connecting/knocking off parts of the shield as it came together, which I think added more realism/tension and looked cool, but ultimately it was an exercise focused more on character animation than fx...so I needed to cut it for time rather than make it perfect. Thanks for your feedback!

    That's really great stuff. Are you self-taught or did you have classes?

    • @KelanHordos
      @KelanHordos  Před rokem +1

      I didn't take formal classes, but I have a brother who is an animator and would show him the shots I was working on to learn and he would give me written notes on what I should change/fix. I would then try my best to do that and then show him the new version and get feedback, rinse and repeat.
      So between that and being able to ask him questions, which I did that full time for about 8 months, I had a sort of mentorship.
      So I wouldn't say I was self taught, but I also didn't go to school. I think one of the most useful things about this approach was I never really got drawovers for notes showing me what to change, so i had to still really stretch my brain to figure out how to do, but had really good guidance of what I was aiming for.
      Cheers!

    Great work! Your drawings are really good. Maybe it's not easy to answer but I would like to ask if you've had trouble at some point to draw characters on model while keeping them 3dimensionally. And if so, how did you practice in order to construct the characters on model? Specially those that are harder to draw like the one in this animation?

    • @KelanHordos
      @KelanHordos  Před rokem +1

      Ya, that is always a challenge. Having a character model sheet is helpful and keeping it close to reference so you dont get to far off the path can help.
      Also part of it is just to practice drawing characters from different angles, learning anatomy etc. But more important probably is developing the ability to break the complex forms down into simple shapes you can more easily practice drawing how to rotate them/the figure in space, and then building the more complex character on top of that. You can sort of see a bit of that in the process, although its not the best example of that.
      Try finding other animator's rough's to tie downs, and it can show a lot of how to approach drawing complex things with a simpler pass underneath and building on top of that. Hope that helps somewhat!

    Were the drawings for the animation done with traditional pencil and paper or was everything done in a 2d drawing/animation computer program?

    What's a rough pass and tie down?

    • @KelanHordos
      @KelanHordos  Před 11 dny

      A rough pass is basically rougher drawings/animation where you are focusing on figuring out the movement and acting in the earlier stages of animating a shot, kind of like a rough draft. In this stage you are not so worried about the character being completely on model or having the drawings be very pretty, but you want to really figure all the movement and other things out at this stage, which is easier if your drawings are loose/rougher as its easier that way to start over or throw out what's not working. Once you have it worked out then you would move on to "tie it down" in the tie down pass by putting the character on model and adding any details or extra things that are maybe not completely worked out in the earlier pass, for example elements like hair or flowing clothing are sometimes done during tie down(although they can be done in the rough as well).
      The tie down should have all the information for going to the final stage of the linework which is called "cleanup" where the final "clean" line is drawn, and this is usually done by another person in the pipeline in professional work(there is no clean up of this shot, it was just personal work).
