RED OAK SIDEBOARD

  • This little sideboard cabinet goes together with all wood to wood joinery, no glue, nails, or screws needed. The framework is made up of quarter sawn red oak and quarter sawn tulip poplar. The panels are flat sawn red oak on show sides and poplar on the back and bottom. Framework goes together with draw bore pegs and through wedged tenons. The top is joined with draw bored free tenons and attaches to the base frame with sliding dovetails. The drawer uses wedged dovetails and stopped grooves so it needs no glue or nails to hold the bottom in place.
The finish is just some canola oil cut with citrus solvent, but really brings out the grain.

LOL Charles the awesome cat has to inspect the work. He wants to make sure the work is nice and square and the joinery is tight. The sideboard meets Kitty approval. Charles has high standards.
Very nice as usual, Mr. Chickadee. It's much nicer than mine from Ikea and I like the sliding doors on the bottom where mine is wide open.
Someday I'll make some curtains to close off the bottom shelves.

I need to make a dough board (with "bench hooks" & breadboards on 2 sides) for my wife & myself. I'll try to mimic at least few joints used here. Need only to choose which ones to use (serviceability in mind) :P

It is people that try to move onto positions of power without a clue how actually do anything that make a country look bad. Craftsmen like Mr &Mrs Chick have always been the backbone of the good things in life.

Amazing work as always. Watching you since 2016 from Brazil and applying your lessons to my craftsmanship since then, which is inspired most by you and Proenneke... The 93-year-old grandfather of my wife, in one of his visits to my home, being well acquainted to carpentry in his youth, was really amazed to see the joints and the way I was dealing with wood (someday I'll show you and he'll jump of his chair). People only believe in machines and I really get a heavy conscience when I go to buy wood and see the machines processing them for me somehow... My opinion is straight that a machine is the opposite of progress. Best regards and once more your work is really mind-changing.

Im both flatered and overjoyed to hear your comment! It reminds me of a famous quote by the Patreon Saint of woodworking, Mr Roy Underhill, "these are not the tools and techniques of the past, no, they are the tools and techniques of the FUTURE!"
Roy has 5 books on traditional hand tool woodworking and over 30 years of his TV program "the woodwrights shop" all dedicated to traditional woodworking, if you can find them I would highly recommend. The last 10 seasons of his show are available to watch free online here
