    I grew up with a chow chow, I was about a year old when we got her. She lived up to 15 years. she was never aggressive towards anyone expect intruders. She seemed like such a calm dog, always friendly towards friends and strangers we let in. She only attacked once, someone tried
    Jumping over our back fence and she bit their bums. Our neighbors caught this from their windows, she has saved us from a burglary.

      I had a similar experience. Mom got me one when I was 1 and she lived until she was 14. Best nanny dog ever. My grandpa actually borrowed her once to show his girlfriend what a good dog looks like. She also only attacked 2 people in her life. Once because someone freaked out at the sight of a dog and so she was kinda feeding off of that energy and bit him in the ass. The other time because someone tried to kick her when she wasn’t bothering them at all.

      After 18 months male chows usually stop liking other male dogs and larger dog. I've had 3 chows and from my knowledge and experience Unneutered chows can become aggressive to larger dogs manly because they get nervous.

    • @BWolf00
      @BWolf00 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ArkzAk I think what you're expressing as not "liking" other male and larger dogs...is really their desire to be dominate. I've noticed it my dogs and yes it is more prevalent in the males. This usually kicks in around the 18mo-2yr time frame. With smaller dogs (those "knowing their place") the question of who's dominate is not in question, yet with a "teenager" or fully adult dog of similar size or larger the question "needs" to be resolved. While it really doesn't change the situation Chows are not necessarily driven by "aggression" but often by the desire to be dominant. This is why it's also important to display strong leadership/master qualities during this period...because they can and often will challenge your position as well.

    My chow/golden mix behaves the same way. This is not a good first dog for someone. You should understand how dogs think and how to establish dominance right away. Once you do that, the chow will be the best dog you ever had. The stubbornness is hilarious and we enjoy working within our dogs personality, not trying to change his personality. Patience, repetition and let the dog train you back a little, but establish dominance and never give it up. You are always the boss of the dog. Once the dog accepts that, all the problems go away.

    Great vlog Carl, Carter is a handsome boy and well behaved. We have an adorable smooth girl chow. She is 7 months old. Good you brought up the 'hotspot' comment. Can be brought on by the coat not being 'completely' dry and the humidity between the double coats. Chows are an incredible breed and very different in personality to most dogs. They are certainly independant, regal in nature and LOVE their own space. Being a primitive breed its like having a bear, dog and cat in one. " Some humans want to avoid a dog that's all over you....Most chows want to avoid a human who's all over them"! lol. Look forward to your next vlog Chow for now))

      Most Chows do the zoomies. My two would run through the house and into the back yard, back in the house, jump over the sofa, then into the bedroom, jump on the bed and then back to the yard. After thirty minutes of so they'd take a nap. I wish I had a video of them.

  • @mrkkg27

    Chows generally bond closely with one person more than others, everyone else in the household will be seen as pack members where they stand in the pack and thus treated depends on a strong owner that corrects dominating behavior. I would not recommend a chow for a first time dog owner. Chows can be stubborn. They are very cat like in personality. They like their space, they want to be near you but on their terms. They do sometimes have a problem with their vision being reduced by the excess skin around the eyes which can require surgery to correct. Don't get a chow if you object to fur because everything you own will have their fur on it. The need brushing several times a week and twice a year their winter/summer coat changes and they shed in clumps. Check with your insurance carrier before you get one as some insurance companies will not cover the chow chow breed and a few others as they are statistically involved in more bite situations. Which, like I said chows are not a good dog for first time owners. They require a responsible owner that understands training and socialization. Because they appear teddy bear like many children and some adults think they're so cute and will run up to the chow with the intention of hugging it but are more often greeted with a growl, or bark warning to stop respect my space. That's the ones the chows see coming. If approached from the rear and they are surprised and grabbed around the neck by a stranger it gets easier to understand why they are sometimes thought of as not friendly. They are wary of strangers especially when placed in a surprise choke hold by someone that wants to hug a teddy bear. Be vigilant when in public as the minute you look away someone will reach out wanting to pet or hug your chow. My comments are observations of chows in general after years of rescue/adoption volunteerism with a chow rescue group. Each dog has its own personality that is influenced by environment, genetics, training, socialization and the bond it has with you.

      I’m not one for signs and slogans, but with ANY dog, do not reach over a strange dog’s head to pet them. If they don’t know you, ANY DOG may jerk back, and make you think they are about to unhand (so to speak) you. If you want to make friends, speak to the dog, then place the back of your hand no less than 6” from the dog’s face, and wait to see what the dog does. If it accepts you, pet the side of the head, or under the chin. This avoids misunderstandings with both dogs, and owners.

      I have a genuine question about their coat... is it ok to get it clipped shorter? I don’t want to shave it because dogs with double coats should NEVER get their coats shaved unless it’s necessary, but if you clip it shorter is that also bad?

    • @paulwags662
      @paulwags662 Před 2 lety +7

      @@mmchannel6007 actually its very true. As a breed they will gravitate toward one person but will tolerate others. If you think your chow chow is "close" to everyone then have someone come up and push you. Just because you THINK its close to everyone doesnt mean its reality as this is a well noted trait of the breed and a reason why they tell people to be sure they want one before bringing it into their home. DEciding you don't want it after a period of time will almost always create a chow that isnt quite as close to its new master. My last one was a great dog, loved kids, didnt mess with strangers unless they showed aggression etc but at the end of the day she bonded with me and NOT my ex wife. However when our daughter was born she bonded strongly with her. It was almost motherly. Everything that MKing wrote is dead on.

He was a black chow chow, (yes blue tongue), square nose with a very beautiful build to him. I would take him to McDonalds, go through the drive through and get him a happy meal. Everyone and I am being totally honest, thought he was a bear cub because he really did look like one! And when my husband walked him they asked the same question. I've had cinnamon,black and cream now🤗 they are low maintenance extremely easy to house break. Loyal and protective. Shed like mad twice a year. Mine have also liked car rides. Definitely intro to people and other dogs but be careful with same sex and cautious at dog parks. Mine loves to cuddle and will fetch on average 6 returns then just sit next to the object. Be careful I usually don't do more than 15 minutes at a time during summer walks and bring water they are heavily furry with oigins from a much cooler climate you want to be careful with heat. What a beautiful chow! They are my favorite breed. I’ve had seven chows, five from puppies. We currently have a disabled pup from a rescue. In my experience, they are very easy to house train, don’t require a lot of exercise, but do need a lot of brushing. They are very smart but stubborn. The only health issue I’ve had with them is hip issues as they age. Although, when I worked at an animal hospital, it wasn’t unusual for chows to come in for corrective surgery for cherry eye.

    Carter is gorgeous! I love his colour. I've only ever had red chow chows.
    Chow chows are amazing. I got my first chow chow when I was a child, my third chow chow is now middle-aged. All three have been great with kids, other dogs, and cats. My chow doesn't even chase pigeons away from his food bowl. We live in the southern hemisphere, so December/January is the height of summer here. My chows go to the groomers once a year in November/December to get a shave, and they do the nails and everything then. The rest of the year I brush and/or bathe him as needed. We get the occasional hotspot, but Fluffington (my current middle-aged boyo) has had two hotspots in his life. The nails scraping on the floor is definitely a Carter thing. Never had that with any of my chows.
    They are very clever, and super easy to housetrain. Fluffington will play fetch, but neither of the others did. They can be stubborn, but only in the sense that whatever you want them to do has to be worth their while. My previous chow would only sit on command if he felt like it, or there was a treat. Fluffington has no problem sitting on command. I don't know if that's just a personality thing or if I've become a better trainer.
    They are lovely dogs, but I would not recommend them for first time owners unless you are willing to put in the work and learn how to train and socialise them properly.

    I have a cream Chow too! 😍 I think I've spoiled her too much bc every time we have guests she demands attention and expects them to pet her and pushes herself on them. As to pet thieves, my girl doesn't just let anyone come close to her especially when someone tries to sneak up on her, she does not like that. She's actually pretty good at letting me know when she sees someone looking a bit shady.
    I will say, while I think my girl is very sweet, she is no longer allowed at the groomers bc she wouldn't let them touch her. She turned into this beast, so of course I understood and quickly left with her. She's my third Chow and I absolutely love them! Just got to remember that socializing them is vital.

    He hasn’t reached maturity yet. I wouldn’t encourage biting ankles, Or being mouthy ( tends to be from not getting enough sleep time-12-14 hours) anything you allow now you reinforce. That’s means he may bite ankles or be mouthy when older but when older and that may not be cute/playful or acceptable .Same with the barking at people from the window. Every time you allow an undesirable behaviour you reinforce it. We are always training without realising , for better or for worse. Chow chow, like other working breeds have genetic qualities which will be in varying degrees per individual dog, by maturity these may become more apparent. They are very headstrong, and have no problem stepping into the leadership role if they don’t think their owner is not up to it. I would still get him trained by a professional and not a treat dispensing positive only nonsense, but someone who has working dog experience or strong breed experience.

I have no kids and my nieces and nephews only come to my house maybe 2 or 3 times a year and I do not kennel her at all and she does just fine with them.. she bonded with my nephew when he was about 6. With all dogs you wanna supervise any interaction with kids.. I love my chow chow she is protective of me! She's not aggressive but if someone comes to the door I am not expecting she lets me know. Actually, yours looks like Winnie, the difference is that my Pooh is 8 years old. They're a lot more confident and at ease around children compared to adults. Isabelle is very fast, agile and active and she loves to run.

    Hahaa oh my gosh, from my experience I have to tell you about the ankle biting thing! My chow did it to when people come over, I’ve raised chows for a lot of my life and my Hugo would always come answer the door with me and I noticed a pattern to the people who he did that too and as strange as this sounds he did that to the same people that didn’t acknowledge him when they came in…I literally started telling people, say hi and pet Hugo when you come in and say hi to everyone else because if you ignore him when you come in, he won’t like you & it worked, he never did it to anyone that acknowledged him on their way in…he’s a member of your pack & it’s his home too, and they literally get offended by the lack of respect shown to him when they came in…no joke, I swear to God, try it 😅✌️from Alberta Canada

    So in my experience he was never agressive exept towards strangers when thex come the first time into the house he barks very loud wich can be very intimidating.

    personally i wouldn't recommend feeding dry food just because of begging- my dog gets rehydrated kibble and raw food, the begging is going to happen if you give in to the puppy eyes at any point in their lives, it has nothing to do with what you feed them. it's also recommended that you brush their teeth because most dogs end up with dental disease by age 2, and dental disease is the first step on the road to cancer or other health issues- he's still young so if you make tooth brushing a positive process it's possible to start.
    dry food has downsides, one of them being dogs having trouble staying hydrated properly which can lead to liver and kidney problems later in life, this is why i always rehydrate my dogs food. he also gets his teeth brushed every night, it's his cuddle moment so he looks forward to it.
    also i hope your brushing him yourself in between those trips to the groomer, double coats can get impacted coats and that leads to skin sores, it's also possible that they can develop cysts and tumors that go unnoticed because of the density of their coat if you aren't actively brushing them and really feeling them to know that they arent developing problems.

      my sisters dog is a chow/pit/rotti/lab and mine is a husky/gsd/amstaff/boxer we have a lot of experience with double coats and shedding as a result, i personally don't believe in low maintenance dogs, if it's not shedding at all it's either being kept shaved or has a matted/impacted coat (my aunts havanese is the kept shaved, 90% of golden doodles are the matted/impacted)

    We have a two-month-old little chow chow girl named winter snow she is a pale cream color as her mom is white. We also have American Eskimos which by the way are known for never having a dog smell. You said you didn't know if a breed that didn't have a dog smell now you do LOL. Winter is doing very well with her pack of American Eskimos. Both breeds are Spitz breeds so we knew that she would integrate well. Winter just like my Eskies will be a service animal for me as I am physically disabled. One of the wonderful things that we have found with her is that she stays with us outside of the house off-leash and here in Arizona you are allowed to do that for a service animal as long as they are trained to it from a baby. She's sweet loving and affectionate and we are so glad to have been given her as an early birthday gift for me from the breeders.

    I had a chow chow. She was great. Really chill and Mello. Hated being in the house. When she was she never pissed or pooped in it ever. She always pooped the same area outside. If strangers came in are yard. She wasn't having it. I could run around and she never bite me or bother me. Anybody else she wasn't having it lol. Hell if some friend was over. If I even grabbed them and shook them she would go at them. They would be like what the hell you are grabbing me. I laugh and say she is extremely protective. She loved bread. I would give her slices. She would gently take it out of my hand. Never barked much either. I would do this game. Where I would juke at her. She do a juke. I would jump and juke. She jump real fast do a juke. Suddenly I drop down she run to my feet low. Wag her curly tail. I give her pets.
