How to Install a Smoke Alarm

  • In this video, I have a great interview with Steve Kerber with UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) about all things having to do with smoke alarms.
At the end, I will show you how to install a smoke alarm.
It's important to know about the life-saving benefits of having working smoke alarms properly installed in your home. Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Smoke alarms should be installed at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms when cooking.
Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Wall-mounted alarms should not be installed more than 12 inches away from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm). Don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.
Remember to test smoke alarms regularly (at least 2x per year), Close Before You Doze and create and practice a Fire Escape Plan.
This video is sponsored by UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute. Learn more about fire safety at closeyourdoor.org/ and follow FSRI on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

I write on the back of the alarm the month and date it was installed, anyway you can write big and it isn't visable (on battery alarms).

Electricians daughter here. I usually bring my own alarm on holidays because many hotels have defect alarms😅 And never, ever, do I use a natural flame candle. Ever🙃
Dad worked closely with a guy (and were good friends with him) who worked with detecting the origin/cause of house fires. I have paranoia of fires and Im completely ok with it!

Great informative video. Many people do not know to not put the detector on the ceiling right against the wall in the dead space. I check my smoke detectors the first of every month when I also change the furnace filter. I put masking tape on the battery with the date I changed the battery on it. My former house I built had casement windows. As I worked at the factory that built them I knew how to remove the sash. When I sold the house I taught the new owners how to remove the sash and also gave them the rope type ladders that attach to the window to use for escape from the second floor in case of fire.

I used to work in the fire protection industry (project manager for installing commercial fire systems) & this was overall great advice! The one thing I’d disagree with is the effectiveness of sprinkler systems. By the time a fire is large & hot enough to set off the sprinklers, the alarms should have been going off for quite awhile to let people know to evacuate. At that point, all the sprinklers can do is protect the property (so the basic structure can maybe be salvaged & the building doesn’t completely collapse), not save human lives. Having a working, regularly tested alarm system is always your best defense. Thanks for sharing this with your audience! 💗🔥

Dad, this was wonderful. The two weekends a year when we change the clocks, we always change batteries on our alarms, clean under the fridge so that collections of dust and pet hair do not cause a problem, and do a safety check around the home. We also keep our fire extinguisher mounted on the wall across the kitchen so that if there is a fire at the stove, we do not have to access it close to the fire. Thank you for all the information.

I watched the entire video. I learned a lot! It had me googling if we need a carbon monoxide alarm. It also reminded me to talk about the escape plan with my son, so that's done! Also, I use an app called Tody to keep track and alert me when I need to clean or do things around the house. This video made me check if there's a smoke alarm task, and there is! I already had it set to check every 6 months, so right around the time changes. As always, we love your videos!

Hey man, I just want to take this time to thank you so much for what you do. No one has to help kids who grew up with no dad. But you go above and beyond to make sure they know these life skills. I did grow up with a father and he showed me all these skills I’ll use in life, but I recently befriended a man who grew up with a single mother and 5 kids. He told me that she did a amazing job as a mother, working up to 3 jobs at one point. But he also said since he didn’t have that father figure to show him these all these skills. And then he told me about your channel, about all the things you’ve showed him how to do. And I think that is a amazing thing one human can do for another. And I just want to thank you for being that figure to all these people, whether you knew it or not. Thank you.

At 21:42 I'd like to advise that in some homes you may have Romex or other electrical cable sitting above your ceiling that you don't want that drill to come up into and get in a snag with. Perhaps consider using a stud finder or at least making a very shallow hole so that you're safe.

If you move into a new house or flat (apartment for the Americans in the audience) and the smoke alarms are too old or damaged to have clear manufacturing and/or replacement dates, change the alarms. Don't rely on the test button, because sometimes said test button will work just fine while the actual smoke-detecting mechanism has quietly broken. Pay attention to the instructions, which will tell you if the new alarms need replacing sooner than the ten years quoted here (and should also give the best placement in a room).
Also, if I were you (general you) I'd buy something better than the cheapest, single-digit option. Relying on a (very) few cents/pennies worth of components strikes me as a bad idea.
