How to Install a Smoke Alarm

- In this video, I have a great interview with Steve Kerber with UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) about all things having to do with smoke alarms.
At the end, I will show you how to install a smoke alarm.
It's important to know about the life-saving benefits of having working smoke alarms properly installed in your home. Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Smoke alarms should be installed at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms when cooking.
Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Wall-mounted alarms should not be installed more than 12 inches away from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm). Don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.
Remember to test smoke alarms regularly (at least 2x per year), Close Before You Doze and create and practice a Fire Escape Plan.

Hi Dad! Been wanting to install some at home so this is very timely. Thanks for this!
You're welcome 😊
I write on the back of the alarm the month and date it was installed, anyway you can write big and it isn't visable (on battery alarms).
I hope you subscribe to my channel.
Hi dad, never give up this channel. This is one of the best CZcams channels. It makes a lot of people that don’t have a dad feel like they have a dad. Love the channel. Keep it up!!!!
As a firefighters daughter I know everything about this stuff. It’s engrained in my brain and I was constantly told about fire safety growing up.
Is it true what he said?
@@redanita731 everything is true
Electricians daughter here. I usually bring my own alarm on holidays because many hotels have defect alarms😅 And never, ever, do I use a natural flame candle. Ever🙃
Dad worked closely with a guy (and were good friends with him) who worked with detecting the origin/cause of house fires. I have paranoia of fires and Im completely ok with it!
I love listening to "Hey Kids".
Hello dad, your videos have been very helpful to me and I love the effort you put into each one of them, although I have a dad, I grew up without a mom and there are many things that only time and experiences end up teaching us.
Thank you for your dedication, do not stop doing it. Love you very much 💖
Thanks Paula, glad you're here 🙏🏻
As a guy who never had a father growing up. Thank you. Alot of people need this.
Great informative video. Many people do not know to not put the detector on the ceiling right against the wall in the dead space. I check my smoke detectors the first of every month when I also change the furnace filter. I put masking tape on the battery with the date I changed the battery on it. My former house I built had casement windows. As I worked at the factory that built them I knew how to remove the sash. When I sold the house I taught the new owners how to remove the sash and also gave them the rope type ladders that attach to the window to use for escape from the second floor in case of fire.
Wow! You sound super informed! You built your own home?
LOVE the masking tape/date idea!!
I hope you subscribe to my channel.
My parents are divorced your CZcams channel really helps me out
dude you should be blessed you are helping people without knowing you are amazing.
This glorious man turned the sound down for the video from the smoke detector. Thank you.
I grew up as a foster and I am so grateful for you because you teach us in the same way as a family
Found you via Reddit, I love what you’re doing and hope to see your account go as one of the most recommended channels because of how helpful you are, thanks for being a dad for those of us that needed one :D
I legit love these videos, i havent seen my dad in about 12 years and theres some things my mom cant really help me with so these really help me
I used to work in the fire protection industry (project manager for installing commercial fire systems) & this was overall great advice! The one thing I’d disagree with is the effectiveness of sprinkler systems. By the time a fire is large & hot enough to set off the sprinklers, the alarms should have been going off for quite awhile to let people know to evacuate. At that point, all the sprinklers can do is protect the property (so the basic structure can maybe be salvaged & the building doesn’t completely collapse), not save human lives. Having a working, regularly tested alarm system is always your best defense. Thanks for sharing this with your audience! 💗🔥
Thanks for this channel! This is the best thing out! We all need a dad in our lives!
Dad, this was wonderful. The two weekends a year when we change the clocks, we always change batteries on our alarms, clean under the fridge so that collections of dust and pet hair do not cause a problem, and do a safety check around the home. We also keep our fire extinguisher mounted on the wall across the kitchen so that if there is a fire at the stove, we do not have to access it close to the fire. Thank you for all the information.
This made me feel so happy for no reason. Thanks, dad!
Love all the videos you make ! So very helpful especially for these young kids who might need them 💙
This was most helpful! I bought a smoke alarm a few months ago and literally just have it on my table since. Will definitely it install this weekend now! Thank you!
I love what you do. It’s very inspiring and is honestly just incredibly sweet. I’m a former orphan and now have a great mom and dad by my side. Although I don’t necessarily lack support I still am loving your channel and what you do. Keep up the good work!
I have a dad I just watch these bc this guy is so wholesome😭
I needed this video!! My smoke alarms have been acting crazy lately and I couldn’t figure out why. Thanks “Dad” 💗
Excellent video with important information that can help protect families. You two dads did a great job. Thanks
Wonderful interview. He seemed such a nice man too. Your energy , puts people at ease. Neat to watch . Also very informative. Living on a boat it's a whole different thing for me. I've seen how fast boats burn to the water line. Scary ... a plan is so important. Fire is one of my biggest fears. This is an important video. Thank you for the info and the dad joke. It was fire, also lmao. We appreciate what you do .
Thanks for your support Morgana 😊
Hi Dad! So glad of this video as I need to install one in my house, thank you!
Also, exceptional piece of paid promotion!
Have a great day!
This makes me cry tears of joy and sadness
This guy is the father figure I never had
Hi dad, glad i found this channel, ive learned a lot from you
Great upload! Thanks, looking forward to going through past ones & catching the new ones to come.
Take care everyone
This video is exactly what I needed! Great timing
Hello! You have been mentioned in Kuwait’s main radio (my country) and I’m very proud of how far you made it and how much you help people 👍👍
I watched the entire video. I learned a lot! It had me googling if we need a carbon monoxide alarm. It also reminded me to talk about the escape plan with my son, so that's done! Also, I use an app called Tody to keep track and alert me when I need to clean or do things around the house. This video made me check if there's a smoke alarm task, and there is! I already had it set to check every 6 months, so right around the time changes. As always, we love your videos!
I need to download this app lol.
I hope you subscribe to my channel.
Hey Dad,
It is always helpful to learn more about smoke alarms because I don’t really know much about them and neither does my mom lol. You’ve been really helpful we use your videos a lot :) thank you so much!!!

Just found your channel, you're an absolute saint
As a firefighter…thank you dad for putting this out there
Another great video!
Dad you helped me so much, thank you very much 🥰
Thanks Dad! Around here everyone gets annoyed when they randomly go off and take them out!! It's crazy. I am very serious about it.
THIS WAS RIGHT ON TIME THANK YOU
I genuinely enjoy your videos, even if I've only just started watching them. My Dad doesn't really care about me unless I'm doing something wrong, He rarely even notices my achievements, and I can't even talk to him about my emotions. You Genuinely feel like a father teaching me stuff, and It feels nice, It Allows me to forget that my real father is kinda shitty.
Hello dad thank you so much for these videos they mean a lot to me.
Hey man, I just want to take this time to thank you so much for what you do. No one has to help kids who grew up with no dad. But you go above and beyond to make sure they know these life skills. I did grow up with a father and he showed me all these skills I’ll use in life, but I recently befriended a man who grew up with a single mother and 5 kids. He told me that she did a amazing job as a mother, working up to 3 jobs at one point. But he also said since he didn’t have that father figure to show him these all these skills. And then he told me about your channel, about all the things you’ve showed him how to do. And I think that is a amazing thing one human can do for another. And I just want to thank you for being that figure to all these people, whether you knew it or not. Thank you.
Thanks for the encouragement 🙏🏻
your best man, thank you for all the videos =)
C est incroyable ce que fait ce monsieur ✌️
Hehe am I the only one that says “hey Dad” everytime Dad says “hey kids” 😁. In any event great video Dad

Nice video👍
Keep up the good work
This is my 1st video and just got a house that all the smoke detectors are not working anymore hence why I’m here. So thank you 😊
This is definitely necessary!
At 21:42 I'd like to advise that in some homes you may have Romex or other electrical cable sitting above your ceiling that you don't want that drill to come up into and get in a snag with. Perhaps consider using a stud finder or at least making a very shallow hole so that you're safe.
hi and thank you for the information ♥️
You are the best 💗💪🏻🇩🇿🇩🇿💓

I would love how to purchase the right kind of paint and paint a wall.

2nd story bedrooms need a ladder to use via a window for fire escape.
You're better than my dad
I love dad jokes
Your like the American dad I never had (I don’t have a dad (obviously))
What brand is good for the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers. Also, where is the best place to buy them? There are different extinguishers for kitchen, paper, etc. Is there 1 extinguisher that covers every situation and, if so, what is it and where should I buy it? Thanks.

💗💗

If you move into a new house or flat (apartment for the Americans in the audience) and the smoke alarms are too old or damaged to have clear manufacturing and/or replacement dates, change the alarms. Don't rely on the test button, because sometimes said test button will work just fine while the actual smoke-detecting mechanism has quietly broken. Pay attention to the instructions, which will tell you if the new alarms need replacing sooner than the ten years quoted here (and should also give the best placement in a room).
Also, if I were you (general you) I'd buy something better than the cheapest, single-digit option. Relying on a (very) few cents/pennies worth of components strikes me as a bad idea.
hello dad you are serious nice 🥰
Hi dad!
