Some basic tools you will need.;
Stud Finder, Tape Measure, Hammer, Level, Screwdriver or Drill, Pencil.
Supplies;
Shelf, Brackets, 1 1/2" screws, Sheet rock anchors, 1/2" screws.

Fathers this is why you should never underestimate or question your role in your child's life. You play a very important part especially during their growing up years.
And father's also need to need to not question or underestimate their children as well. My dad "tried" to show me how to do things. But he is so impatient and such a sociopath, spending any amount of time "doing stuff" with him was pure agony. He still holds on to that age old delusional belief of "i?know I sometimes treat you the way that i do, but only because I want you to be happy..." what does that even mean???
It took me years to figure this out, but I really believe that he was actually trying to ruin my sister and I. He hated seeing us think and behave like intelligent independent people. And he had little ways of.... it was like certain comments he would make that made me almost feel a sense of embarrassment for growing up... very bizzarre!!! So manipulative on a different level
And why all of that??? I figured out that it was as simple as when he grew too old to do for himself, he would (hopefully) have us around to be his servants. Over the years he would make jokes about goin deer hunting when he was old and in a wheelchair. He would ask if I would push him through the woods in his wheelchair and then chain him to a tree so he wouldn't go rolling down over the hill, and then laugh...
But years later... I realize that not a word of that was a joke. That was part of the manipulation. The humor and jokes used to sugar coat what were actually real details of his Utopia of a retirement. As I got much older, he would blow my phone up if I didn't answer, then leave a 20 minute long voice-mail saying things along the lines of "what if I was calling because I needed you to call an ambulance for me???? How would you like it if you did t hear from me for 2 weeks and then one day you came to the house and found me laying there all black looking and bloated with maggots all over me??? How would that make you feel??? You need to answer your phone when I call!!!"
Uuugh I haven't spoken to him in 7 years and good riddance to him. He made me look so bad over the years
I'm 54, I may be older than "Dad". Mine taught me things when I was younger & he wasn't on a bender. I lost him when I was 16. There were lots of things left to learn. After a really nasty divorce & being homeless for 3 years, I've finally bought a place with no idea how to seed a yard or how to fix the pond & lake the workers made in my front & back yard, or install a fence. Thanks for being here for everyone.

For me it’s the same story here. Grew up with a single mom and sisters, never had a dad and certainly won’t need one now :) I’m 19 and moving away soon, so this content is really helpful for when I move into my own place!

My father passed away a few years back too, he taught me so much about car maintence, home repair etc. My parents separated when I was a toddler so I've always kind of been the "man" of the house. I find myself forgetting some of the things hes taught me, so I've been writing them down in a little scrapbook. I know it sounds silly but it's even sillier to break down at 4am when you're trying to remember where the studs are in the walls, I couldn't remember that it was supposed to be 16 and a half inches on center and lost it lol. It's a good way to remember the little things like that and I highly reccomend it. anytime something pops into my head that hes taught me I go write it down. I'm sorry about the loss of your father and I hope these videos bring you as much joy as they do me 💖
My dad passed when I was 16. So I really appreciate this channel as well. I’ve found that so few people know how to do these things. My friend taught me how to use a drill just a few months ago.
I lost my dad back in 2017 who taught me some basics but he was our Mr. Fix It and I used to call him for simple things I needed help with just to talk to him randomly. Thank you for these videos.

Hi "Dad", video suggestion: "How to put curtain rods without a drill". THANKS a lot!
Hi! I'm not a dad but I know that curtains are very heavy, however it isn't much different from putting up a shelf without a drill. Make sure you have a stud finder, as you do not want to be guessing on where a window frame truly is due to shoddy workmanship or weird design. Might be overkill but why not be sure this isn't one of those weird times.
Absolutely work with a helper. Make sure any chair or step-stool is on an even, safe surface and not too short. Use a ladder if you have to feel safe, better safe than stupid. Work from left side to right side as well. This way you don't miss steps. Left side, right side adjustment to it. If you try to adjust to much on both sides, you'l be all over the place. My steps will deal with putting up a three piece curtain rod (ie two seperate brackets and a rod) and not some all-in-one adjustable package.
You need a level, screwdriver, pencil, stud finder, stepstool/ladder/chair (two if wanted),
1) Measure - Find and mark the studs. Find out where on the left side you'd like to place the bracket, use a pencil in the holes to mark it. Feel free to be messy, it's a pencil, just be clear. Get the curtain rod and the helper to place the right side bracket on the wall near where you'd like it. Put the rod on the brackets and using a level on the rod, adjust the right hand side up or down until the rod is level. Then mark the holes on the right hand side. Dad does the same with the shelf in this video.
2) Screw Holes - Yeah this is going to suck because you don't have a drill. However this can be done with willpower. You take a screw and just screw in that pilot hole like Dad did above for the shelf. However you are not a power drill with horsepower and torque, but it's going to be done anyways. You get a screw, and just screw that screw into the wall by hand. Please do not hurt yourself. If you for some reason have a smaller screw, use that to make the first hole, THEN use the appropriate screw to make the hole. A HAND drill can be purchased on the cheap almost everywhere, or found in thrift shops. However you can also pick up drills on Craigslist for C H E A P from businesses that went out or people who upgraded. I went from Black and Decker to DeWalt, and sold my old drill for ten bucks, some even give for free. B&D is good enough for most new peeps and small projects, DeWalt means you give it to your grandkids in your will because it will last that long.
3) Mount - Pop in the brackets and rod with however it works. Every model is slightly different but it should be inherent. Because you got teh holes, you don't need to work hard to get screws in. Because you levelled, the curtain is not uneven. Because you marked the studs, it won't fall!

I live alone so this so helpful to figure out how to do basic things. Before I just lived with my mom and we would have to do everything ourselves so I had to learn to change light switches and unclog dishwashers on youtube. I am so glad you exist!

You're honestly a saint. My father Passed away back in 01 when I was 7. My mom did a wonderful job raising us all by her self, to me she's the greatest person in the world and I don't think she could've done a better job. However most of my life growing up I feel like a missed out on a lot of the interactions that a son should have with their dad. I was lucky I had a decently big family so a lot of my uncles and grandfather really did step up to try to recreate those interaction so I could get some of that fatherly guidance in life. I know not every kid out there has that same fortune I did and may only belong to a small family or just has no male figures around. You're a bastion of hope for these individuals, for the kids that would never had any of this guidance were it for you. I'm going on 26 this year and I never would've know for the life of me on how to put up a shelf, or unclog my tub . The amount of confidence you can stow up on an individual by taking that fatherly figure approach with these videos is is miraculous and I hope nothing stops you in this endeavor. :)

I wish I'd found this video a couple weeks ago. Nobody prepared me for this kind of stuff with home ownership, and I had no clue drywall/sheetrock screws existed. I decided to set up some shelves in my garage and very quickly realized the drywall on it's own wasn't gonna cut it.
CSDragon I found this out as well while hanging up some curtains in my home... lol. I didn’t even know how to use them when I finally got a hold of them. Knowing that Dad wasn’t just a phone call away anymore 😞 Thankfully CZcams was there, but it’s just not the same

If you go into straight drywall, you need to use a drywall anchor. You predrill a whole recommend for the size anchor and screw you're going to use. Then you tap the anchor in with a hammer lightly, and then you can screw whatever you're hanging into the anchor and it should hold unless its is really heavy.

Also having a helper or two makes all the difference! Having someone help look at the level, holding the shelf, or even just having a cellphone camera flashlight providing extra light can be very helpful.

Dad, how do I? Oh yes, bought the drill and what do you call it cement hammer thing, but a bit intimidated. Also not sure how to buy the screws, drywall fittings, and measure the correct drill bit required. I want to build pantry shelves but the drill bit vs dry wall plastic support thing, I have no idea. You can tell by my terminology!

I really appreciate this. My dad passed away in 2020. He was in the construction industry and was a big DIY kind of guy. He knew a lot about everything, from building things to fixing cars - I tried to learn what he taught me but admittedly I don't remember a lot of it. I just moved out on my own and have been pretty lost when it comes to DIY projects, which makes me miss him even more. I can't call him for help anymore, but these videos are super comforting and helpful. Thank you for what you do!

I applaud your passion and your reasoning behind this. There needs to be more people willing to step up to be good mentors for there family. I think we as a society need to focus more on stuff like this then handing your 2 year old a tablet to get em out of your hair!!! . Teach your kids !! Love your kids, help your kids , in the end family is all you have.
