A look around Caernarfon Wales including a walk around the Castle and Town Walls, and Castle Ditch, Castle Square and Castle Hill to name just a few of the places we see!
We begin this 4K Virtual Walk round Caernarfon Wales on Aber Foreshore Road looking across the Afon Seiont river that flows out to the Menai Strait
To cross we go across Pont Yr Aber bridge over to the stunning Caernarfon Castle where we can see just how majestic this historic building is, and the sheer size of the castle walls!
There's so much history to Caernarfon Castle Wales that it would be impossible to list it all in this description so please do as I did and search Wikipedia for Caernarfon Castle History and have a read - it really is fascinating and there has been so much happen here it's a must read!
Caernarfon is a royal town, community, and port in Wales, with a population of 9,852. It lies along the A487 road, on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait, opposite the Isle of Anglesey. The city of Bangor is 8.6 miles to the north-east, while Snowdonia fringes Caernarfon to the east and south-east.
Caernarfon is home to Wales’ most famous castle and an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mighty Caernarfon Castle commands the lion’s share of attention, but the town’s narrow streets and stylishly redeveloped waterfront also merit a visit. The castle, built in the 13th century by Edward I as a royal palace and military fortress, was at the core of a medieval walled town.
Caernarfon was formerly spelt Caernarvon in English, but today the Welsh spelling is universal. “Caer” usually denotes a fortress that pre-dated the stone castles built by the Welsh and Normans. ... The “n” in the middle of Caernarfon is a truncation of “yn”, meaning in. So the name translates as Fortress in Arfon.
Caernarfon is famous for its breathtaking castle and as a stronghold of the Welsh language. The castle and fortified complex is recognised on UNESCO's World Heritage List as one of the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe.
Although the castle is arguably Caernarfon's biggest attractor of tourists, it is not the only thing in the town worth visiting. It is a bustling market town with a busy port, as well as magnificent views over the Menai Strait, the channel that separates Anglesey from mainland Wales.
It may help you to pronounce names if you remember that the emphasis in Welsh is usually on the penultimate syllable. For example, Caernarfon (kyre-nar-von), Beddgelert (beth-gel-airt), Llanberis (thlan-ber-ris), Felindre (veh-lin-dray). C - pronounced as a K, as in English 'kick' eg: Caernarfon (kyre-nar-von).

I live in Caernarfon
I spent a lovely day here in July of 2023. I’ve been wanting to come since I was a kid. This town is where my predecessors came from, sailing to the USA in 1730. At 78, I can only hope to make a return trip some day. Keep up the great walks.
Thanks so much - really enjoyed filming this one!
Nice accompanying music, feeling very relaxed on this tour, thank you
Extremely Detailed and Patient VideoGraphy here!
Well Done!
A terrific little film. I have so many incredible memories of this place. I holidayed here with my family down the coast as Aberdesach until my final holiday here when I was 19 with my then fiancee. What memories I have of us and our hilarious Jack Russell, Rosie! The town is much the same (I am
2) 55 now) but has been slightly spruced up. It is still lovely and just watching this film makes me recall the perfumes I wore then. Well done. You caught the essence of this place and it was a real pleasure to watch.
Thank you so much Sascha!! That means a lot to me! 👍
All Very Nice This Town and Your Film.😍🎥🏰
It is magnificent isn’t it . Beautiful lovely little town too . Some lovely shots of the castle on here I love North wales such a lot to explore. Lovely film
Thank you so much ❤️

Cracking tour. It certainly have my friend an exciting introduction of what to expect when we visit tomorrow.
Have fun!
Excellent video. Went there as a kid. This video made me want to go again...
Ah nice! Thank you
I actually live in Caernarfon and i love that people do stuff like this about here. Thanks and keep the videos coming ❤️❤️
Thanks so much!
Lovely lovely place - I'm going to head back there soon as it's sunny again!
Are there any Lidl's, Aldi's or Tesco's near Caernarfon? The only place for these kind of shops seems to be Bangor
Just watched the tour, I've been here many times but love walking with you and looking at it with fresh eyes 👍
Ah awesome. Thank you so much!
Loved the walk around Caernarfon , I love the history . But I just love all of Wales anyway Thank you
You're really welcome Aileen!
Looks gorgeous 😁😁
Really appreciate this. Going to stay in Caernarfon next year hopefully. Have been before a long long time ago in my youth--1988. Thanks for all your vids, very entertaining and keep up the good work. :):)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bridge Keeper Lodge in Caernarfon, Wales
This bridge keeper’s lodge is the first thing you encounter after crossing the Aber Swing Bridge from Caernarfon’s center. The Aber Ferry House was constructed in 1822.
Ah thank you! That makes sense!
Looks great in the sunshine!
@@GimbalWalkTV we love Caernarfon. Been a few times in our motorhome
I feel something very strong from this castle ! I can feel it meant a lot to the Welsh people !💜💜💜
Definitely!
Well, yes it did mean a lot to the Welsh. Back in the 13th century, it meant the subjugation of the Welsh by the Norman kings of England.
@@t.a.k.palfrey3882 Yes,but Welsh fought back real hard & besieged/ recaptured the town & base of the castle & later again. And it was the symbol of their fight . 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
Fantastic I’m just watching this
It’s great I visited here 10 years ago with my son on the West Highland steam railway
The station is right near where your video starts
I took the same route as you so it brought back many happy memories
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay long as I had to get picked up by coach
I’m looking forward to the rest of your video and will watch it right now 😊
Thank you so much Jonathan!
Gimbal Walk TV I was on a package coach holiday
called the great little trains of Wales based in Llandudno at the Grand hotel
We saw so many amazing places including
Port Meriot ( which is well worth a visit
I’ve stayed in Llandudno again since as there is so much to see and do around there
Keep it up😊
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Caernarfon several times and I absolutely love it!
Nice! It’s fab isn’t it!
I'm going in June for a few days, cracking video, I know where to go now, pub crawl all worked out, we're staying in the Anglers arms, so very relevant to our trip (wish you'd gone in and had a pint though). Can't wait, I'll no doubt be playing it again soon.
Miss this place, my grandparents lived in Bethel, near to Caernarvon, i remember going to the floating restaurant, near the Mr Whippy ice cream van, fond memories.
I agree about visiting Conwy and to add to the theme of castles, what about Beaumaris on Anglesey?
Definitely! Never been hope it's beautiful!
Thank you so much for watching my channel I really appreciate it! 👍
I agree too lovely
All three castles, Caernarfon, Conwy and Beaumaris were commissioned by Edward 1 and built by Master James of St.George. Caernarfon was modelled on the walls of Constantinople.
I was there in January 2005 and I felt I was the only visitor in town hehe, I loved it! So want to visit Caernarfon again 😊
Same here!
Loved seeing this you do a good job keep em coming
Thank you! Will do!
Excellent informative production showing Caernarfon. I like your style which makes the area you are visiting the star of the show and not the person behind the camera. Welsh is the main language, and the Food in the Black Boy takes some beating. Scoops makes some excellent pancakes. It’s good to park on the Victoria dock , have coffee in the gallery and walk past the Marina into town. Looking forward to your next production.
Thank you so much Roger! Some great info there for anyone visiting this amazing place too so thank you!
very nice video and the music was grooving ;-)
Thank you 🙏
It's 25 years since we visited the castle as part of a holiday celebrating our silver anniversary
Ah happy memories Ann!
Thank you so much for watching my channel I really appreciate it! 👍
I have some amazing memories of this place 😉😁👍
Have you been inside the castle Mark? Is it worth the visit?
Gimbal Walk TV yes years ago and really enjoyed it there’s also a fabulous butchers there which has been there for years i was only 18 the first time round now 55 😁👍🍻
Another great video you never let us down thank you
Thank you so much Patricia!!
Lovely video ,pity you didn't see inside the castle. Museum inside you only ticked half your bucket .Glad you used the Welsh names for afon seiont etc.I live just across the menai strait 👍👍
Thank you Terry - I thought about going inside the Castle but thought it would be better to go back and do it as a separate video on the castle itself - am really looking forward to it!
Loving any tours of UK, going to make more visits when we can 👍🏻
Have fun!
At the beginning of the video you panned towards The Anglesey pub. Just beyond the pub, within the town wall was the gallows, last used in 1910 to hang William Murphy for murder. As you walked up Castle Ditch, the building to your left with the great big stone pillars were once the Crown court building and jail.
1Ah amazing - didn't know that! It's so full of amazing history this place isn't it Ken!
When I was a teenager my father bought a boat from a guy who ran a fish and chip shop in nearby Waunfawr, We moored it in the harbour in front of the castle and over time came to know every boat name and many of the owners. When exiting on a transatlantic voyage somewhere, we had to toot the horn with one long blast followed by two short ones so that the bridge operator would come out of the little house (shown at the start) and open the swing bridge. The balcony you refer to at 13:54 - I have a picture of Charles and Diana standing there waving at the crowds on the occasion of his first visit to Wales with his [new] wife. She was wearing red on that day too! She was beautiful.
Wow I'm jealous - all that sounds fantastic!
@@GimbalWalkTV I forgot another little gem - we watched Bucks Fizz win the Eurovision Song Contest on a black and white portable TV hooked up to a 12v car battery whilst sleeping on the boat moored there against the harbour wall.
Fantastic video. A place i have visited many times. Recommended Chester for a future video.
Thank you Jeremy!
I actually drove to Chester after filming this one but it started to rain so I need to do it another day as I want to show it in it's best light but I will definitely have Chester on the channel soon!
Thank you for watching my channel I really appreciate it! 👍
We were in this lovely town in 2017 and will certainly be going back in 2021! Watching your tours makes me very excited to get back to Wales! Have you done a tour of Edinburgh or Stonehaven? Would love to see those through your camera lens. Beaumaris is also very lovely. 👍🏻
Thank you so much
All of those are on the filming list now!
Awesome video it always rains when I go to wales 😊 it looks a great place though
I was lucky - I saw the weather forecast was for blazing sunshine so I drove straight there to film this one with lovely blue skies!
I luv the walk , and I like tours.
its a pity you couldn't go into the castle.
phew that was some walk we done lol 😆 im tired.
take care.
ha ha thank you Moira! Yeah - quite a walk that one!
Trying to figure out what I love most... your walks and comments or your choice of music. Maybe it's both!
Thank you!!
The lodge at the beginning of the video is where the swing bridge keeper lived.
Ah thank you Ken - I did wonder if that was the case!
ive visited caernarfon castle its my favourite welsh castle .although wales does have a few more to visit that are stunning xx
So many castles in Wales!!
Thank you so much for watching my channel I really appreciate it! 👍
Nice one. I was born and bred here before moving to London with my parents. Happiest childhood ever! If you were born in the town, you could go into the castle for free. Imagine having a castle to play in with your mates!? The tiny building in the side of the wall with the footbridge overhead is actually a Greek orthodox church! In Welsh we were called " Cofis" Croeso I chi boi.
Such a great place - I'm going back as soon as I can

Can't believe I missed out Conwy on this trip - I'll go back and film it as it looks great! Thank you for the suggestion!
Thank you so much for watching my channel I really appreciate it! 👍
Me and my wife spent a weekend in a b a b and we loved it 👍
Awesome / such a great place and good fun!
Took me back to when my dad took me when we visited wales.
I've seen Caernarfon written 17 times in this video, not one time correctly. The walking tour was interesting. I see a lot of changes in the royal town since last I was there in 2001. I was first there in 1950, though was then too young to appreciate it. I was there for then Prince Charles's Investiture in 1969 too. Thanks for the memories, but edit your written commentary a bit better, I suggest.
Thank you for the grammar lesson 🤣
I think the auto correct on the text thing I type with has over-written what I typed
@@GimbalWalkTV thanks anyway. I agree that Caernarfon is an unique town. The castle is the largest Norman castle in Europe. Just a mile from it is Segontium, the most westerly legionary fort in the Roman Empire.
Would of liked 2 see more off the town center i lived around here for over 20 years i really miss home 😭
Will film more on my next trip there!
I was Arch Deacon of Caernafon for a while, a very long time ago, overlapping my position as Rector of Walgrave.
Ah amazing! What a lovely place too!
Hello, loved watching this, me and my husband will be visiting in march for my 31st, we have never been and so excited, we are staying at Victoria house b&b in church st, do you have any videos of around that area please, i know its not to far from the castle, is sept 2020 when you recorded this because no one is wearing masks? also do you know if dogs are allowed on the beach please? thank you x
Not sure Michelle - I was just visiting like yourself
O my gawd i been there
My goodness its changed there use to be motorbike shop in square
Yes lots of changes!!
As I recall the motorcycle shop was Bardsley Brothers.
Never bein seems interested 😎👍
the skate park is the best place to hang out
I bet!

@@GimbalWalkTV yes, was there from 2004 till 2012. Lots of history in Caernarfon with the prison & other places, even seen the Queen & Prince Philip come to the castle, also used to watch Remembrance Day parade & listen to the service by the Cenotaph you shown. Loving your videos, seeing a few places been & some not (so it's like being there in a way).
Top banana 🍌 👍😉

Walk around the castle?, you were in the castle more than once, you just did not enter the garrison.
👍🏻
Pls no music....just the ambient sounds would be far better
Thanks for watching!
nice video only ruined by the music
Thanks for watching! Really appreciated
