Rick Mast and Ed Shull involved in the same story. Doesn't get much better than that! Looking forward to hearing more of these stories in the weeks ahead.
I look forward to your take on the rise of nascar in the 90s and why. I was there, i started watching in 93 at 8 yo and i know why i started watching. I loved the characters driving. They seemed liked real people. I also liked the danger. I never wanted to see anyone get hurt or killed, but it happened a few times, and i always thought it made it a way more hardcore sport than football etc. Nascar drivers were like gladiators strapping into their steel chariots. Yall were some tough mfs. I still cant believe noone died at the 93 diehard 500. I know i heard you say somewhere that it was the hardest hit you ever took and didnt get knocked out, and you were the 4th car in on that mess that damn near killed stanley. Ritchie took a mega hit too. Horton actually got lucky going over the wall i think. But you guys seemed superhuman. Ricky taping his eyes open, davey running hurt all of 92, so many guys like that. Hell schrader cut his damn thumb off and didnt miss a race lol. I totally get why theyre not allowed to race like that anymore, but it was crazy seeing guys like dale and terry win while hurt. But idk if it was adrenaline, willpower, or just really good painkillers 😂
Mast is exactly right about the blocking too many times. Even Dale Sr blocked Sterling Marlin too many times and paid the ultimate price unfortunately.
Democrat Georgia governor Jimmy Carter had the top Cup drivers to the governors mansion in the early 1970's before he even ran for president. NASCAR had not become so "PC" yet. (Didn't even know what it was, lol.)
I never pass up an opportunity to hear Mast tell stories!
I loved listening to the old Mast Cast, looking forward to stories from one of the Skoal Brothers!
