Laredo is probably the most underlooked city in the US. I live in Laredo, and don't know half of what you are saying. And I thought I knew alot about Laredo. Compared to all the big metropolitan areas in Texas like Austin, San Antonio and El Paso, which are all looked upon as cities with much culture, and they are, but people wont pay attention to a smaller town with richer culture. It's cool that you are one of the only channels on CZcams that goes into detail about our history.

I grew up in the barios of Laredo. But, you know what, all our neighbors were great people. I did not know English, but I learned it and mastered it. I went to Laredo College then TAMIU and graduated and became an expert in my field. I did not complain I just did it. When I visit Laredo I really enjoy watching KGNS news. The Rio Grande Republic was originally the southern part of Texas + the 3 Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon & Coahuila... and yes, it short lived as an independent republic in 1840.
However... and despite the dissolution, these Mexican 3 states have always maintained a close collaboration in matter of tourism, economy, social / healthcare services, public security, etc... and of course, have kept very close relationships with Texas in matter of tourism, trading & commerce...
Remnants of those days when we were a Republic.

Very nice video, I work logistics, like half the town, and go back and forth between Laredo Texas and Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas, both are very nice towns with the exception that Nuevo Laredo (on the Mexican side) has had a prolonged period of unrest due to criminal activities by local gangs, we can only hope to see the end of it in the distant future, both Laredo’s are ever growing and are full of nice people, just las week I learned the story of Colonel Santos Benavides, according to Wikipedia he was the highest-ranking Tejano soldier in the Confederate military and was a Laredoan, he fought in the Battle of Laredo where he repelled 200 Union men led by Major Alfred F. Holt with a force of only 42 Confederate soldiers. He also participated in the Battle of Palmito Hill, the last land battle of the Civil War that was fought just east of Brownsville Texas on the banks of the Rio Grande. Regarding Jarvis plaza, locals also call it “La plaza de los viejitos”, if I’m not mistaking because there are a couple of retirement homes one on each side of the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse building.

Romans conquered the Greeks by war but Greeks conquered Romans by culture. Laredo is a perfect example. Mexico in the US among the Valley ( Brownsville to Laredo) this region is by far Mexico inside the United States. 95% hispanics, 90% bilingual.
In my opinion this region is an example how 2 cultures live in harmony for decades! Not only a few years. Anyone from Laredo can tell you they celebrate Mexican and American holidays. The City doing a 4,th of July very patriotic, not enough? Only city in America that celebrate George Washington Birthday! And at the same time celebrate Mexican independence day as simbol of respect for the heritage culture living among them.

I’ve been living in Laredo for about 2 years. Have rarely ventured downtown but it looks really nice. The few times I’ve been there it seems it has lost some of its vibrancy… many businesses have probably moved to the north side of Laredo which is plain, looks like every other city in the US and lacks the charm and uniqueness of the old Laredo.

I heard that you could see Mexico from Shirley Field but I don’t know if that’s accurate

I've been to Shirley field many times, never noticed Mexico. You may be able to get a glimpse of some of the Nuevo Laredo taller buildings. On a clear day you can see the mountains in Mexico from many places in Laredo.

A bunch of bums live in that city and I'm one of them lol. Not much to do here just go the mall and wait for the weekend to party.

Laredo isn't crazy like the east or west coast. It's a one- of- a -kind place that has moved forward with the times, but not changed in character..thank goodness!

I lived there as a kid and remember it as being an inhospitable place. All scrub mesquite bushes that were impossible to chop with an axe and caliche soil (more akin to concrete) that couldn’t be dug with a shovel. And…did I mention Pachucos? Yeah, look it up.

Streets are narrow in downtown, not all streets within the city are narrow.
