  • San Ygnacio is a true Texas treasure just south of Laredo. It has an incredible collection of historical buildings for its size. In time, I could see this becoming a popular tourist destination.

    Several years ago I was out by Laredo hunting. On our way out we passed by this town. In my opinion this was probably one of the best maintained and preserved historical towns I’ve been to in Texas. There’s nothing here that feels out of pocket and most of the people here keep it like that which I think it’s awesome.

      yes the spanish and their allies the Tlaxcaltecan people in the early 1500s until 1600s and, then criollos and mestizos or also known as mexicans traveled here in the old camino real starting at veracruz mexico, and ending in arizona and texas up to Luisiana, since 1650s is when the mestizo race became the most abundant in new spain that is why mexican culture predates texas way before its independence

    Born and raised in Laredo I passed San Ignacio many times. I have stopped by but a few times. One of the placards mentions Mercurio.Martinez. I know him personally. He is full of great stories and still active in the community. Great video. There is an assortment of historic villages long since abandoned in the area. Great history.

    Great video exposé. I have lived nearby there all my life and have driven by the turn off maybe a thousand times and have never stopped to visit. Now I will plan to see this wonderful place. It reminds me very much of Guerrero Vijeo (Revilla) which was flooded when Falcon Dam was erected. When Falcon lake waters are low one can drive to the old town. The layout and the buildings are very similar to San Ygnacio, except that they are in ruins. Unfortunately, it would be ill advised to visit there now as the area is infested with drug gangs and cartel murderers.

    Great job on the video of my hometown! I was married in the church. I still own my parent’s home there, I recently remodeled it as a short time rental and to invite friends to visit this magical town. For nature lovers there is a butterfly sanctuary at the end of town and it’s a great place for the birding community.

      Much of Texas is like that, not as "green" as it may appear. That is often due to the many drought tolerant small trees that are so common in Texas like juniper, cedar, mesquite, etc. Also this is in the Rio Grande valley, but a mile away its browner.

      These are part of the architecture. If you watch the movie “Viva Zapata” with Marlo Brando you will see that parts of it were filmed in San Ygnacio. The house across from the plaza had “rejas”, traditional for serenading. The movie was filmed in 1952.

    What a lovely little town. It reminds me of the old Pueblo at Tucson. Houses were built in an inward-facing courtyard style, both for protection [the Indian wars didn't end until the mid-1880's], and to focus the life of the family inward. Beautiful homes. Just as gorgeous today as they were when they were built. You can see the pride the owners take in thier homes from how carefully they are lept up.

    • @eynacanales-zarate8677
      @eynacanales-zarate8677 Před 2 lety +1

      Actually this is the original town. After Falcon Dam was built, San Ygnacio was listed as one of the towns to be flooded but in 1951 the residents petitioned for the town to be spared because it was on higher ground. There request was granted, although two years later the town flooded, the buildings remained. The town has not flooded since.
