This very sophisticated composition by John Dowland over 400 years ago is brilliantly brought to life by Sting and lutenist Edin Karamazov. The 4-Sting choral part around the table is historically accurate as singing books were published so each singer around a table could read their separate part. Sting consulted leading musicologists before recording John Dowland's compositions. And isn't Edin Karamazov's lute playing extraordinary?

Can she excuse my wrongs with Virtue's cloak?
Shall I call her good when she proves unkind?
Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke?
Must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find?
No, no, where shadows do for bodies stand
Thou may'st be abus'd if thy sight be dimmed
Cold love is like to words written on sand
Or to bubbles which on the water swim
Wilt thou be thus abused still
Seeing that she will right thee never?
If thou cans't not o'ercome her will
Thy love will be thus fruitless ever
Wilt thou be thus abused still
Seeing that she will right thee never?
If thou cans't not o'ercome her will
Thy love will be thus fruitless ever
Was I so base, that I might not aspire
Unto those high joys which she holds from me?
As they are high, so high is my desire
If she this deny, what can granted be?
If she will yield to that which Reason is
It is Reason's will that Love should be just
Dear, make me happy still by granting this
Or cut off delays if that I die must
Better a thousand times to die
Than for to live thus still tormented
Dear, but remember it was I
Who for thy sake did die contented
Better a thousand times to die
Than for to live thus still tormented
Dear, but remember it was I
Who for thy sake did die contented

John Dowland ( 1563- 1626) Why you didn't inform the name of the composer? Some may not know about him and may thing it is by Sting when Sting is only singing a musica from Shakespeare time. By the way, I love Sting intepretation and yes, I know this song by others, like for instance The Julian Bream Consort. Great, great, great, but somehow Sting's touches me more although I also like maybe because Sting is kind of magical...I felt I traveled in time. I saw myself in the Elizabethan era sitting next to him and Karamazov who is simply fantastic and added something very special to the video.

I'm pretty confident in Dowland's time without academic institutions where people "learn" how to play/interpret music for decades, there would have been much more individuality. Even if you listen to early operatic singers from 1910 on record, they sound absolutely nothing like modern classical singers with their huge and constant vibrato.

Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke?
Must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find?
No no: where shadows do for bodies stand,
Thou may'st be abus'd if thy sight be dim.
Cold love is like to words written on sand,
Or to bubbles which on the water swim.
Wilt thou be thus abused still,
Seeing that she will right thee never?
If thou canst not o'ercome her will
The love will be thus fruitless ever
