Beautiful. Rick Beato brought me here. I had forgotten this song, but so glad I found this version. Truly amazing and beautiful. In LOVE. Thank you for this.
You can watch it thanks in small part due to me. This video is the only one available on CZcams since 2010, since I am the only one who has the exclusive permission from Sting and copyright holders to keep it on my channel without a copyright strike. In my Music section playlist you can also find and watch many more Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque era music videos.
Sincerely,
Astrid

@@VoluspaAstrid That is awesome. Thank you.
@@VoluspaAstrid Epic. Just found this channel, but I am so glad you are willing to put in the work to ensure music like this can be available to us!

This very sophisticated composition by John Dowland over 400 years ago is brilliantly brought to life by Sting and lutenist Edin Karamazov. The 4-Sting choral part around the table is historically accurate as singing books were published so each singer around a table could read their separate part. Sting consulted leading musicologists before recording John Dowland's compositions. And isn't Edin Karamazov's lute playing extraordinary?
Agree on all points.
Astrid
.
Yes, i totaly agree on all counts.
Im very impressed with that Performance.
You could see the joy on Sting's face, at the mastery of Edin Karamazov.
Thank you for your explanation. The performance wouldn’t have had anywhere near the same impact without it.
Indeed!
Without Rick Beato, I should have missed this! Thank you all!
Legit, this sounds like it could have been a Prog Rock track from the 70's. One of my favourite takes on John Dowland's music!
I was brought here by my 83 year old aunt. Wonderful mastery from both artists.
This truly is an echo from the Renaissance. It's put the hairs on my neck standing. The physicists are wrong, you can travel back in time. Stunning performances by both Edin and Sting. Beautiful filming too.
I remember when I heard Sting did an album of lute music and I thought " Wow, Sting has really jumped the shark into complete irrelevancy." Hearing this, I say fark relevancy, this is great music. follow your muse. Way to go Sting.
John Dowland was the rockstar of the Renaissance!
I had no idea that Sting had 3 identical brothers. That explains a lot! Stellar performance :) I love Renaissance music.
Can she excuse my wrongs with Virtue's cloak?
Shall I call her good when she proves unkind?
Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke?
Must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find?
No, no, where shadows do for bodies stand
Thou may'st be abus'd if thy sight be dimmed
Cold love is like to words written on sand
Or to bubbles which on the water swim
Wilt thou be thus abused still
Seeing that she will right thee never?
If thou cans't not o'ercome her will
Thy love will be thus fruitless ever
Wilt thou be thus abused still
Seeing that she will right thee never?
If thou cans't not o'ercome her will
Thy love will be thus fruitless ever
Was I so base, that I might not aspire
Unto those high joys which she holds from me?
As they are high, so high is my desire
If she this deny, what can granted be?
If she will yield to that which Reason is
It is Reason's will that Love should be just
Dear, make me happy still by granting this
Or cut off delays if that I die must
Better a thousand times to die
Than for to live thus still tormented
Dear, but remember it was I
Who for thy sake did die contented
Better a thousand times to die
Than for to live thus still tormented
Dear, but remember it was I
Who for thy sake did die contented
BRAVO !!!
Thank you very much!
Thank you!
Thank you, kind transcriptionist!
Thanks, now singing the words ...
HOLEY SHNIKES!!! This is wonderful! MANY thanks to Rick Beato.
I love how he has the sheet music designed to be read around a table that John Dowland originally published.
The "Better a thousand times to die" refrain could be straight out of a Yes record. Big Jon Anderson vibes on the harmony.
Well known song for those who love lute and voice music. The lutenist is brilliant, a virtuoso, and Mr Sting reveals again his extensive musicality. Great version, a happy one!
Whats better than sting playing a piece of music over 400 years old .. the answer 4 stings all in harmony
I hope people who are brought to this music by Sting also listen to the many other musicians who have sung and played this remarkable composer. One of the joys of this music is that there are many ways to interpret it.
John Dowland ( 1563- 1626) Why you didn't inform the name of the composer? Some may not know about him and may thing it is by Sting when Sting is only singing a musica from Shakespeare time. By the way, I love Sting intepretation and yes, I know this song by others, like for instance The Julian Bream Consort. Great, great, great, but somehow Sting's touches me more although I also like maybe because Sting is kind of magical...I felt I traveled in time. I saw myself in the Elizabethan era sitting next to him and Karamazov who is simply fantastic and added something very special to the video.
like for instance Dame EMMA KIRKBY, the best interpreter of the English High Renaissance and Early Baroque, one of thw best Early Music Sopranos on Earth. Or the DELLER CONSORT or TORONTO CONSORT, and many more.
Thanks for this recommendation👍
@@dabreu It helps to sing it in your own castle.
This is my new favorite thing...thank you for bringing me here Rick
Crazy Brits. They know how it's done. Beautiful.
Now, perhaps we understand the popularity of Sting's music. Was he Dowland in another lifetime? Regardless, his musical roots run deep and it shows in the quality and scope of his compositions.
Well put ! Nothing to add.
What am amazing rendition of a song only known bc of music on paper. Gents, I humbly bow to you and thank you!
I love this song but I still laugh every time I see the four identical Stings sitting around the table.
I’ve only just stumbled on this. ! I’ve always been a Dowland Purist, But !
This is great playing all round ! Dowland was a man of The People.
Super 4 part vocal harmony. I think Dowland would have liked this ! .
Yes you are absolutely right. Dowland was a man of the People. I also like Bach very much but download just mastered the lute and there is so much life in his pieces. .
Never thought a Harkonen could sing so beautiful......Feyd,, is that you?
So beautiful! Thank you Sting and Karamazov! And to Rick Beato for sending me here. Bella, bella!
THAT IS ART! Absolutely stunning. 👏👏👏
How can anyone serioulsy have given this a negative comment?
Although Sting is operating in a genre that he's unused to , he captures the mood of this piece as well as any authentic singer of this genre ever could!
The final "multitasking" of Sting in theis video is pure genius!
He's very used to it. He and his band listen to Bach almost daily, for the past many years.
@tuxguys The book he's singing from is a facsimile of the original song book. On the left page Dowland included the voice and lute version, and on the right, a 4 part vocal version.
Sting has dabbled in so many musical styles as he has gotten older. He has such a great voice and gift for music. Those few who dislike this hauntingly beautiful rendition of Downald's work are obviously either tone-deaf or emotionally dead.
BRAVO !!!
FANTASTIC !!!
DOWNLAND IS VERY PROUD OF STING AND EDIN;
IT MADE HIS LIFE IN HEAVEN EVEN MORE HEAVENLY !!!
Absolutely beautiful!! Could listen to this kind of music forever
I instantly added this to my "Most beloved song/pieces playlist" I will never forget this.
Real music by real musicians.
All I want to say to Sting is don't stop moving in this direction.
Music Appreciation 101 brought me here.
Georgeous rendition - Thanks Rick Beato!
Unreal!!! So beautiful! One of the most complex pieces written for the voice and Sting hit's it right out of the park. Karamazov, brilliant!
I will take Sting's rough and raw approach to bel canto any day. It fits the emotion of song. The question is whether Dowland was continually bearing his broken heart over lost love, or was this just his schtick.
There is a legend that Robert Devereaux wrote it in the Tower awaiting execution.
I'm pretty confident in Dowland's time without academic institutions where people "learn" how to play/interpret music for decades, there would have been much more individuality. Even if you listen to early operatic singers from 1910 on record, they sound absolutely nothing like modern classical singers with their huge and constant vibrato.
This was the pop music of the 1500s.
Yes, but it has passed the test of time. And withstood it with honor.
OMG there are like 6 Sting(s). I didn't know they were born 2 Sting pairs of triplets lol
Who can possibly sound better than Sting? Well, four Stings.
Amazing..! Now I understand a bit more the inspiration behind Gentle Giant and even Jethro Tull.
Full of surprises...
4 Stings are clearly enjoying the company of each other...
Haunting, beautiful piece of music. These songs shall never more sang by a woman.
it depends which woman....thete are so other types of voices among various female artists, a part from sopranos...
falou pouco e falou bosta
I really enjoy seeing Sting sing (gosh what a difficult thing to pronounce). He looks so ironic, so amused...
he is not ironic at all...quite the contrary.....he is deeply into it, because he is realy transported in that time and space and he is absorbing the others into that time-mashine, together with ingenious Katamazov. Very Transcending.......as it should be.
Rick Beato also brought me here. Sting and Karamazov did an amazing job! Much to my surprise, I was able to find this song on online karaoke and sing it this morning. Unfortunately, I have one voice only!

There's so much positive energy in this song and this performance!
wow... just wow!
I return here again and again to hear this.
Oh my goodness! That is so beautiful.
Love it!
Yes, Rick brought me here too. Amazing, beautiful!
Edin your a beast on the lute!
anyone else notice the historically accurate song book usage? :)
YES
I use this video while teaching a music history course to high schoolers because of the book usage!
no
Beautiful version!! Thanks for sharing
Superb! Just superb!
True pearl within peas ... Thank you.
Put Sting in a time travel machine and he will never return. He will be stuck forever singing for a Tudor court.
please please please make this happen!
Unfortunately they didn't have tantric sex in the Tudor era.
Such joyful music making!
The first rock star.
Dowland rules !!!
A wonderful album, I love it!
I love this album.
Bloomin' fantastic!
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
you killed everyone with this Sting. R beato!
Very Impressive
Great music.
Agreed.
Astrid.
Download met Sting voice on the cloud with great thankfull. Bravo String and Edin.
I'm came from the Renaissance era Nenamorut , I found the performance of Edin Karamazov and Sting were fabulous ! Maestro Dowland was excited with their interpretation !
he said it himself?
Yeah, he told me too !
SO good.
Fabuloso
Edin Karamazov & Sting the best team.
Ух! Как же здорово! И Стинг прекрасен, и Карамазов потрясающий!!!!!! Greetings from Russia!:)
Спасибо. Приветствие из Западной Европы.
Astrid.
Astrid, you have beautiful name!!:)
Thank you : )
СОГЛАСНА !!!!
i love this album
Had no idea that Sting played the archlute!😮
Let's not be critical, the lutanist is brilliant and Sting does a very nice job of this; it's fun to listen to and musically pleasing to boot !
❤️ this
Often called "The Earl Of Essex's Gaillard" and associated with Robert Deveraux, Second Earl of Essex, who started as Queen's favorite but ended up executed for high treason.
Great piece, and amazing that we can hear what those in the Renascence heard! But wonder, did she excuse his wrongs? Would love to hear a song of response, in kind.
I fear no response was the response.
Extraordinary !!!
That lute solo!
Elizabeths I favorite hit, she loved to dance the floor with Robert dudley...spin me robin ,,,,
Love sting!
The variations... ( probably wrong word) in this piece are. .. AMAZING!
What an eternal recording ❣
Adorable
Fabulous
To any of the music snobs out there, please forget telling sting what he should or shouldn't sing!
Sting is an incredibly talented musician that can sing in whatever genre he chooses to , so just accept that he's a genius!
i'm a classically-trained musician so I guess i'm supposed to be a music snob :p but honestly, i like this! they clearly put a ton of work and love and talent into this project, and it's refreshing and fun to hear new and unique versions of early-music masterpieces :-)
BRAVO MARK, YOU TOUGHT THEM A LESSON !
@@liftflowthrive BRAVO! WISE WORD FROM A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN !

Both my favorite musicians. Throw Colaiuta in there too
This Karamazov brother is a virtuoso

Sting is great but this Edin Karamazov is from other planet.
He is.
