Thanks for sharing these great tips and tricks on mapping out whitetails. This one reminds me of where I hunt around our house in the Northern Panhandle of West "By God" Virginia. Still looking for the right places to put some stands and arrow my first deer even though I have had my bow since 2006.

Very helpful, thanks for the video. I'm hunting a similar area with ridges and drainages this year, though there are red oaks and hardwoods up on the ridges, and conifers down along the steep drainages. Now I know how to tackle that landscape a little better!
Love it. Would like to see your take on mapping agriculture/small tree grove plots. I’m in South Dakota. The deer spend 80% of their time in the corn, which usually doesn’t get cut until during or right after the rut. They sometimes bed in my groves but I usually find them bedded in the corn, once in a while they will hit beans in daylight, but it’s mostly after dark. Very flat ground as well.
Best channel there is love yall. Michigan hunter here... only ever shot does... such a pressured state of hunting but still learning every year. ill get mine soon i hope!

I was so stoked to watch this video but I have to say boys that doesn't look like big timber to me. I hunt in the Missouri Ozarks. Its miles and miles of open hardwoods. Big timber....I mean to big for so climbers. I mostly use terrain features such as saddles, draws, military creast of ridges to determine deer travel. I loved the segment about the wind and crosswinds. You guys still remain the most educational hunting show out there in my opinion. Keep'em coming guys!
Yea , don’t look like big woods to me either. I hunt the mountains of southwest Virginia.

I think when they say big woods they are referring to a large segment of woods that has no other type of terrain to break it up. I'm looking at a large tract of public right now with that same lay out. The nearest crop field is more than a mile...
Good info I agree but not really big timber, at least not for where I hunt in the ozarks where mature timber stretches for miles
@@gheft762 like finding a needle in a haystack to find a good clearing on public in the ozarks. At least one that doesn't have 100 other people on it.

You guys are pretty good at scouting. I have a nice piece of property that I just can't seem to get figured out. It has hardwoods, ridges, willow thickets and lots of tall grass for bedding cover. I'm moved cameras and stands trying to figure these deer out but, just can't quite pin it down. Kudos to you guys!

Can u guys do a vid on hunting flat terrain. I hunt in the Deep South and there’s almost no change in elevation. I also hunt big woods but most of the stuff y’all covered in this vid was dealing with elevation change. Thx keep up the good work!

Quetion for the podcast..hill country bedding and terrain like this are what I deal with...I cant seem to. BUy that top 1/3 for bedding concept ...this video also confirms for me that the bedding is much lower on the hill/mountain
Dense forest without agriculture around is a different game. Maybe there are a few grass fields within a mile. Then add in high hunter pressure.
Yep. That's what I hunt in Tennessee. Mountain ranges. Acorns for food. As many hunters as acorns in the trees.

Thermals are dropping on a cool morning, they rise as the morning heats up. You get on the leeward side of the mountain just over the top you can be scent free from the deer, but you have to time it right

I have been using these techniques in northern MI and having great success with finding buck bedding areas. I feel like I am not spending enough time in these ares scouting though. How long are you guys scouting? How much do you pick an area apart? I scouted a 120 acres ridge with a buddy in about 2hrs, but we got in, found our sign and trees and left. I feel like we did pretty good but we left out a lot of areas. Maybe its just that we were able to eliminate a lot of it due to focusing on specific spots but I feel like we rushed through it.

I hunt public ground very similar to that but the ditch lies east to west and we have a predominant wind out of the west. Where would you expect the deer to bed in that situation? Along the small draws coming up out of the ditch?
You guys could make a living just traveling in the summer and showing guys where to hunt if people had questions. I been hunting east tn for 15 yrs and just now finding good government land but still don't know quite how to set up on it.

Can you guys do a side by side breakdown of your archery set ups and go into who shoots what in terms of rests, sights, arrows, broad heads, releases etc and do a little compare and contrast as to why you each choose similar or different gear? Not so interested in brands and whatnot but who shoots drop aways vs whiskers, who shoots fixed blades vs mechanicals, 1 pin vs 3 pin vs 5 pin etc I'd like to hear the pros and cons to each in on place with a compare and contrast sort of setting.

"there's fields way out that way where they're heading to feed at night" To me that's not big woods hunting. Try the vast sections of woods in places like northeast MN, northern WI and other areas with no ag fields. It's harder hunting but still fun and rewarding.
I was just thinking the same. I hunt northern Cass County in MN and there is zero ag. Tough hunting but we’ve managed to get a few big bucks through the years. However, there is not rhyme or reason to our tactics. Wish I could learn more from you guys on this.
Yes, same in most areas around here. Little to no ag fields, especially when I'm up in Cook County MN.
Some public Kentucky don't have ag fields and it's been rough for me. I usually hunt Indiana where I'm from

You guys seem to enjoy scouting season as much as i do. Buck turds are the thing i look for the most, it is the most reliable evidence of deer travel. also i think its cool you guys look for old buck rubs from the previous season, i do this as well and compare them to new rubs i find when they become active again. so far i found a TON of deer sign where i plan on hunting this season, opening day cant come soon enough!
I just got OnX...scouting today I marked some waypoints...Came home too find they where not where I saved them....1/2 or so away..3 hours of scouted shot,,,time is limited truck driver...WHAT I"M I DOING WRONG?

You mentioned that on a cool, windless morning that the thermals would be rising. Wouldn't the opposite be true?
You would think so but.....we seem to have better luck hunting low on mornings like this because the scent tends to hang. Especially as sun just starts to come up and warm the ridges around you. Wind isn’t blowing hard enough swirl and kick back up the ridges. It behaves in very strange ways in different scenarios but hunting low on calm, cold mornings has worked for us
