I've fired several small 25's, and found all of them - even the cheapies - to be surprisingly accurate and no problems with feeding. For a small pocket gun, they would be my first choice. Of course, we have all been told that they lack power to stop a fight. Strangely, I have never heard this from anyone who was shot with one, so I'll withhold judgement for now.

The original James Bond gun in Ian Fleming's James Bond books was a Beretta .25 before graduating to a .32 Walther PPK. A Walther PP was used in the movies! I once had a .25 Beretta, which I had no complaints about, but sold it and bought a .22 Beretta because of the cost of ammo. I put over 5,000 rounds through it with never a misfire with CCI ammo. I never really saw any difference between the .22 and the .25 either, back in the 1980 s, except the price of ammo.

I think it comes down to this: most of us have a small collection of .22 rimfire rounds that failed to fire. But I for one can’t think of a single time I’ve had a centerfire round fail to go bang. John Browning wasn’t stupid. That was the whole point of him creating the 25. Ballistics aside, the reliability of a 25 versus a 22 alone makes most other issues a moot point.

Very different experiences from mine. I have had one dud out of all the 22 I've ever fired. Even that dud wasn't a dud per se, the bullet just had issues, namely being overloaded so the casing ripped up. Just two weeks ago my buddy's 9mm had three bullets that didn't fire. Had the pin strike, just didn't fire. So it definitely happens with center fire

Pay no attention to people who have never been shot who come on youtube trying to tell you that the .22 lr is too weak for self defense. One point in favor of the 25 acp is being able to get proper FMJ bullets as opposed to the plated lead found in 22. I've yet to be convinced about the lighter expanding bullets, I prefer the 50gr standard FMJ bullet from the fastest round available to give the best penetration if anything hard gets in the way of the bullet. At the close distances these little guns are meant for, 9 rounds of 25 acp from a fast firing Beretta 950. or similar are going to stop anyone, IMO, if you can hit the target as discussed in the video. No I wouldn't choose 25 acp if I knew I was heading for a fight, but sometimes a little pistol is all you can conceal, or it may be all you have left if your main carry fails or is lost in a scuffle. Those who mock 25 acp would I'm sure rather have one than nothing in a self defense situation.

During a visit to Chile, the Commander in Chief of the Chilean Military presented him with several honors, one of which was this pocket pistol, the oval on one grip panel reads "Gen'l EHB" (his initials), and the oval on the other grip panel is the Chilean shield. I also have the presentation box and an original box of ammo!

Another difference--.22 small pistols are blowback, while .25 are positive extraction. That means if a .22 fails to cycle, you can't get the casing out by racking the slide. You have to hold back the slide and use a fingernail to get the shell out.
A .25 can (usually) be cleared by racking the slide. In a defense situation, that is a major difference. Also, I think the nice .32 compact pistols were another factor in replacing the .25.

I think 25acp is probably a better choice than 22lr for a self defense pistol mostly because of the reliability factor however the poor choice of guns chambered in 25 and some of them being quite antiquated makes me question that reliability factor hence the need for 25 acp to make a come back so we have new guns chambered in it. I can say this 22lr zips pretty fast and has a tendency to do nasty wounds with the bullet tumbling going different directions and splitting apart were as 25 and 32 acp usually just goes in the target straight and narrow.

    @Snookynibbles Před 5 lety +2

Though I enjoy Mr. Harrell's channel a lot, I believe he missed the two most significant factors in the comparison: 1. reliable functioning, and 2. penetration. First, the .25 acp pocket pistols are a world apart from the .22 rimfire because the .25 cycles and ignites the primer much more reliably than any .22 rimfire pocket pistol. The .25 projectile is of a smooth copper jacket offering minimal friction when chambering whereas the rimfire utilizes a dry, sticky lubricant that both creates lots of friction along accumulation of the lubricant at the mouth of the chamber. Couple this with the minimal mass of the slide coupled with a relatively weak slide spring leading to .22 rimfire pocket pistols that suffer significant failure rates to reliably cycle their ammunition. Also, the .25 acp's center fire primer fires more reliably than a rimfire primer. This is because the rimfire pocket pistols feature weak hammer springs that frequently fail to deliver an adequate dent to the rim of the cartridge case; conversely, the .25 acp primer was purpose built for the application.
Second, the .25 acp delivers superior penetration than the .22 rimfire from pocket pistols. Both caliber configurations generate similar muzzle velocities, but the .25 enjoys a 20% weight advantage for greater momentum. The .25 with a copper jacket compared to the raw lead of the rimfire means the .25 is less likely to deform during penetration. This is significant since the 60 - 70 ft. lbs of energy available is quite marginal at best for reliable penetration. Any projectile expansion will only reduce that marginal penetration.
For these reasons, the .25 acp pocket pistol is a better choice than the .22 rimfire; neither being a good first choice of course.

The 21A prefers .22LR CCI Stingers, but the .25ACP is not picky at all, when it comes to ammo. The 3032 is just slightly larger, shoots the .32ACP, stings a little bit, between your thumb and index finger, but it is a great little tiny pocket gun that is less picky than the expensive elitist Seecamp. I inherited a Titan .25 by FIE from my grandfather. At 20 ft, this lil guy is really good. I use Winchester 50 gr Silvertips. My lil 22 LR seems more accurate at longer distances than that. I will agree that when I 1st tried to find modern ammo for the 25, it was limited to FMG, round nose military style, or 35 gr hollow points. Now I can get several different types fairly easily. I like my 25. It's loud and rude, pretty accurate close range, and is so tiny, I can put it in my pocket and it looks like a set of keys (bulge) . I don't think it could hit the broad side of a barn when shooting across a street, but up close and personal, it's lethal.

Very well put together video with excellent points. Thank you ! I am so sick of hearing keyboard warriors with little real world experience run down the 25 APC. I carry a 1908 in a Blackhawk pocket holster daily, and with the right ammunition, feel just fine about it. Love your work, have subscribed. Keep em coming !

Honestly, the "boring part of the video" where you talk, is probably the most interesting and educational part.

Paul.....you are such a nice , patient man. You take the time to explain in terms a wide audience can understand. I really like your videos. (I also hope I never make you upset. You are a great shot!!)

I have a lot of faith in my little Colt .22LR body pistol, it's cool to see an expert validate my very non-expert opinion. Sure it's only a .22, but all these rounds are going right where it hurts because this thing is a tack driver. Thank you Paul!

I have a 21A that my wife liked to carry when arriving and leaving work in downtown Santa Ana, CA.
It and the ammunition that I fed it, has worked every time.

I just inherited my grandfather's Beretta 950 B from the late 60's that's chambered in 25acp. It's in fantastic condition so I may buy a box of quality ammo and try it out

I know this is an older video, but I would add another advantage to the .25 acp and that is the ability to handload for it. Because it is a centerfire, you can roll your own, making the ammo much more affordable.

What a great presentation. I happened to watch it because my older brother is bringing his mint .25ACP Beretta Jetfire down to shoot next month - he bought it new in 1968 before the new law Paul referenced went into effect, and has rarely fired it. Can't wait to try it. While I think there is little doubt that - for most people - .22lr is going to be a more practical choice, this does a great job clearing up a lot of misconceptions out there when these two calibers are compared.
