As a former F-15 Eagle crew chief and U-2 Dragon Lady crew chief, I sincerely appreciate the shout out for the mechanics. It was an honor to serve in the United States Air Force for 37 years (21 active duty, 16 as a civil service employee). Even being completely retired, I truly miss it and the comradery. You have built a beautiful airplane and I salute you sir.
What years on the U2?
1987-1996. Alconbury and Beale

Ah, I was a U2 Crew Chief at Beale 2002-2006. First on 1079 then 1065.
I never got to work the S model. I left the program before the conversion.
Appreciate the positive comments about mechanics and crew chiefs/Planecaptain (while in the USMC, both specialties were combined, so I was certified on both).
However, nothing drives home the criticality on maintenance more than putting a mechanic in the airplane they worked; I wish that incentive flights within the USAF were made mandatory to mechanics in upgrade training; nothing motivates to not cut corners than that. 🤣😝👌🏽
Congratulations! One key takeaway here is to document the first flight the best you have the ability to. Not for just data acquisition but for an historical record. After doing two of my own, I wish I had such memorable days a bit more documented.
Thank you for your perspective. I hesitated to film at all, but I’m soooo glad I did. Congrats on your successes!
Thanks for taking us along for the ride! Congrats!
Wow! So good to see. Congratulations. Inspiring.
Congrats on the maiden flight! Beautiful bird. Great video and debrief!
Congratulations, Sir Great Job!!!
I finally caught up on all the first flight vids. I dig them all.
Way to go Steve- it looks beautiful in the skies!
Congratulations, The Backcountry Booger flies. Nice job, I bet it feels remarkable.
Love it, congrats on the first flight! Looking forward to getting started building my own S-21 later this year.
Kudos on the build and first test flight. Your approach on the test program is spot on. That attitude keeps the risk manageable. Looking forward to riding along with every video!
Congratulations! Must be a great feeling, I have been following your build for the past few years and hopefully will be starting my S21 build in few months.
freaking awesome. I was so stoked and a bit scared when I flew my JA Highlander for its first flight. A feeling you will never forget.
Congrats from Catalina Island! Also, to YOUR entire family and crew.. With out them, your Bogey build and future back country flying would become more challenging.
Congratulations! It is comforting to hear that a first flight for such an experienced pilot can be a little overwhelming. Thank you for sharing that...makes me feel a little better about the nerves I've had during phase 1 testing.
Oh I’m so glad my nerves came through. 110%. One of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken even considering my past. So yeah… feel good about your nerves. It shows you love life. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
Congratulations, totally awesome. Try a ND filter on the GoPro to get rid of the frame rate issue, probably a ND8.
Thanks Bryan! Yeah the ND filter wasn’t my priority that day but 100% will get that going. Let’s go fly…
Kinda been watching from the start. Nice work!
Congrats Steve! Thanks for documenting it so well. Excited to follow along through the test phase. I'm about to start my wings. Just finished the tail feathers, flaps and ailerons. How does the roll feel with the aerosport wingtips? Trying to decide if I want to spring for a set of them.
Congrats brother! She's a flying beauty
Congratulations🎉
very well done
Congrats
Congrats!. Also fly Garmin has the ability to display engine data overlayed with gps.
Since that was a deeply scientific and very regimented flight test if I didn’t know better, I would almost have thought you had a good time doing it. But I understand with such demanding workload there’s no way you could possibly have a good time undertaking such an arduous flight test schedule. You faked it well.
Next time it stops raining put that smile back on your face and go out there and fly that thing.
Congratulations not only did it fly well but it looks good.
YESSS!
Curious why you opted to sit left, stick is now in your left hand and engine controls on the right. Coming from single seaters and tandem seaters, this would seem weird to me.
I thought about sitting right seat for that reason, but in the other two airplanes I fly nowadays (Bonanza and 737) I sit in the left seat. So it’s actually more consistent to my present and future ops. Thanks for the comment!
If you remove the front and rear wheels from a mountain bike will it fit in the back of the S21
I imagine it would. You can get the actual dimensions from the factory but it's way bigger than most others in category.
*Brake wear-in
Got it
Metal Matters
Or carbon.
Fabric?
Like my genes? (sic)
Metal and carbon!
🤦♂️
Can you not spell "brake"???
Wow, okay spelling police. Add value please.
