  • In this video I cover the common things to check if your model tips off on take off. There are other things that cause this but the tips in this video should help resolve and solve 95% of the cases.
    You need to check - motor connections, motor rotation, prop rotation and installation, accelerometer calibration, let the model initiailiase on a level surface and check the radio is setup ok.
    Thanks for watching, I hope this video helps those newer builders and Pilots avoid too much head scratching if this happens to them!

    THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I'm a heli Guy and but I want to try FPV Racing. Started building a ZMR250 yesterday evening. Took it out for the maiden this evening with the result being it flipping over immediately. Your first tip was the item I has missed. I assume it would be mapped in the SW. So I rearranged the ESC signal leads, took it outside and started flying about my front lawn.

    In LibrePilot there is a check box under Configuration, Stabilization, Basic, at bottom left check "Zero the integral when throttle is low". That fixed flipping on takeoff for my homebuilt quad. Before that it always wanted to tip over when taking off. Another thing to check is ESC calibration. I had to go into BLHeliSuite and turn on "Allow programming with transmitter", then go through ESC calibration in LibrePilot, then go back into BLHeli and turn it off.

    I have checked all of these things ,and I am going back through all things on this video and I'm going to try it again.I could not get my escs to calibrate properly through the gui,but I did do a manual Cali with throttle channel on rx before installing the motors on my nighthawk 250 ,my quad is almost exactly like the one on this video.I will describe .nighthawk 250,qav 250 clone w,cobra 2204/2300 kv,lumineer Simon k autoshot 20 amp esc ,seriously pro f3 control board, lumineer 4s batt and spectrum dx6 running pwm lemon rx.I'm having trouble with it flipping like this so I'm going to run back through what your video described again as I have been through pretty much all this stuff I'm thinking I need to recalibrate escs again,it is the only thing that didn't go right through gui,so I will do it manually through received again.I haven't messed with pids at all they are exactly like they came .I thank u for all your help and your videos are great I just seem to be snakebit on the naze ,f3and cc3d.I have several of each of these and can't seem to get any of them in the air .I would really like to get this f3 in the air .I've never had these sort of problems out of any of my kk2 ,or nazas.Help me please.

      You will have missed something basic. Connect to the GUI and confirm the virtual model moves in exactly the same way as the physical model, make sure that the controls are not reversed and the channel values are in the ranges discussed in the SP3 videos . Recalibrate the ESCs and try again.

    I have another cause for flipping on takeoff that I didn't see listed. I have an SP3 Deluxe on a ZMR 250 with a PDB and I wired the motors up through the PDB. I had all of it done correctly except when I went to plug the FC into the PDB I was short one wire. I just grabbed a single connector wire and plugged it in. I noticed the motor lagging when powering it up through Clean Flight and just went with it. It did a slow flip rather than the fast flip it was doing when I had the FC in backwards. I bought some 3 pin connectors and trimmed 2 off of one and used the other one to power the other 3 motors and VOILA! It flies now! I have had so many problems with my past two builds I was ready to quit. First I used screws that were too long for the motors and trashed 3 of them. Then I burned up a set of ESC's then this problem. Now that I finally have it solved I am back in!

    I have a Zmr250 frame with emax2300kv motors, 30amp Little Bee Esc, and SP Racing F3. Running newest beta flight. Using Devo7e with deviation 5.0 and a Devo rx701 for control. Everything checks out in beta flight, values are good and steady at 1500, Arms from switch and motors spin up no problem. All motors are wired in the correct order and confirmed that they are spinning in the correct direction. (Bl Heli suite reversed 2 and 4). Tried bi blade and tri blade props, checked prop orientation multiple times.
    Airmode is active and spins up motors when I arm the quad. I can see there is control on pitch and roll axis, but as soon as I give it a little throttle the motors shoot up to full speed and it flips out of control off the ground...tried this 3 times now and I've taken a chunk out of my antennas and chopped a pole of my aomway vtx antenna :( Please let me know any ideas of what to try!

    Hi there, thanks very much for this video. In your experience, is there likely to be any damage to motors if a drone flips onto its side on take off? I foolishly did this last night because props were on the wrong motors. One prop was damaged, that was it. Would appreciate your expertise. Many thanks

    • @Painless360

      @@Painless360 thanks for the response! Yeah, when I check the motors in beta flight configurator, all the motors are in the proper spot and spinning the right direction… although this AIO board was acting quite bizarre when I was setting it up. I was attempting to flash the esc firmware… I first tried blheli_m, then JESC, then eventually landed on bluejay because whenever I plugged in my battery and clicked “read” it would detect different esc’s on the same board! It’s a 4in1 I don’t get it? I hope it’s not a faulty board because it’s more trouble than it’s worth trying to get any sort of support from anyone. I’m starting to wonder if 2203 motors are too big for the geprc dolphin’s 20a AIO board? Idno. I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it.

    I did an FPV landing on a curved barn roof some distance away, took off and it flipped which was bad as it slid down then fell off the side 25ft straight onto the ground.
    was wondering if a leg got snagged on a bolt but maybe it was the FC over compensating for it being out of level?. It was leaning slightly to the right then flipped to the left on take off.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  Před 8 lety

      +RemFireball I'd suspect that something was snagged or one of the blades was getting caught. The FC will try and pull the model up to level as quickly as possible on take off so maybe it levelled out and some of the props brushed the roof? Best of luck with the repairs!

    • @RemFireball
      @RemFireball Před 8 lety

      +Painless360 Got it on video so I may post it later, didn't here any grinding sounds, its a HMF Y600 and has a long legs to. Pretty sure the low prop spooled up first and had the inertia advantage when I then punched the throttle.
      Cheers, hopefully I only bust a prop, the tail yaw assy, and the FPV camera tilt mount - the benefits of a smallish model.

    thank you so so much for the multiwii video series it helped many newbies like me to build their own quads...... and thanks for all the tips in this video. I am having issues with various components on my quad thought this is the place where i can ask them all... any help on these will be much appreciated.
    1) ESC -- even though i calibrate all the ESCs individually, 1 and some times 2 motors [specifically D10, D11) are spinning late, starts at 25% of the throttle. How to calibrate them through FC? and is there any other way to calibrate them?
    2) ESC -- Just with couple of tries one of the fours ESCs is failing. this happened twice now not sure what is happening.
    3) GPS -- I am having SE 2.6 board with 2.4 firmware on it. For some reason GPS wont fix, when i connect GPS module to FC and FC to system i see lat log and all the other data in the multiwii GUI but, GPS fix is red. i2c is always blinking once instead of 3 blinks.
    4)Bluetooth -- I think APPLE doesnt have a proper app for multiwii configuration. the one that is out there doesnt connect to the HM-06 module on my quad at all. I am pretty sure module is good as i see it on my laptop under bluetooth devices but, i dont see it on my iphone or the multiwii app.

      @raghav205 Před 8 lety

      Thanks for your reply....
      1) i did manual calibration as shown in one of your videos but, still two motors start little late than others. That is the reason i want to go with calibrating motors through FC.
      2) failing - motor is jerks initially then at 25% it rotates and then 30-40% stops working when i connect it to battery. i tested the motor with other ESCs and it works fine. it happened with two ESCs now.
      3) I did everything from scratch and GPS works now again thanks for your video.
      4) borrowed an andriod phone from a friend to test the bluetooth, phone connects to the bluetooth but, light on bluetooth is solid red instead of green and i dont see any readings on the app. i have double verified the settings and the values from your video still no luck.

    If I takeoff too slow, the quadcopter wants to move forward and it tips forward - often breaking a prop. I have the same problem when landing - RTL and auto-land also cause it to tip forward. After it is in flight it is relatively well trimmed. I like to destroy props on takeoff and landing, but want to stop this.

    My Top-Race TR-Q511 Drone was working until it flew into a creek and was somewhat submerged. The next time I attempted a take off two of the propellers spun while the other ones did not and the drone flipped over. Is this a problem that I can fix or is it waterlogged? Thanks

      +Thomas Quirk you need to make sure that the model is thoroughly dry before attempting to power it up again.. if the water wasn't salty the it should all come back to like when its dry.. best of luck!

    I realised that 1 of the motors is a bit sluggish and when I throttle it , the copter rises and it slowly flips over to one side constantly (flips towards the sluggish motor). To add on, that motor will suddenly stop spinning but it does not happen all the time. 1 thing I realised is when I off the throttle, that motor will stop spinning first before the rest of the motors every single time. My ESCs were recalibrated but the problem still remains the same. Do I have to change that sluggish motor or is there something else (I am using naze32 by the way)?

      Adding a camera shouldn't make that happen. Adding a camera will adjust the COG slightly so a small move of the battery will be needed to move the COG back to where it needs to be. If I move any other sticks, all motors (including the others that don't increase speed! ) respond correctly, with yaw pitch.
    Only the throttle has this problem, can anyone help?
    And in betaflight if I increase throttle on all motors in the master slider, all motors spin equally.

      +Dragon69Fly I should clarify, I built my own wooden quad from beech and plywood, 40" (1016mm) prop tip to tip. 26" (660mm)motor shaft to shaft diagonal. Weighs same as the store bough i purchased and takes more of a beating. At 3 or 4 times the cost of a mini u can understand why i don't take many chances. Then there is the slower reflexes of a 67 yr old fart who's brain doesn't know what the hell his left hand is doing.
      Yours is good advice though.

      +Dragon69Fly Forgot to mention it weighs 5.5 lbs. Dropped it from 30" onto a steel guardrail and only dinged 1 motor, 40 bucks!
