This week on POLYCOSM we look into the new "Sculpt Vertex Painting" feature added in Blender 2.9 Alpha. I demonstrate the difference between the old mode and the new and improved feature, what Vertex Painting is useful for, and how to paint b&w masks to feed into the different shader-inputs such as roughness, metallic, alpha, etc.

WANT TO LEARN HOW TO BECOME A MASTER SCULPTOR IN BLENDER?
A few weeks prior to taking on the Xerocole project, I took a CG Boost course called "Mastering Sculpting in Blender", which taught me everything I needed to know in order to create this sculpt in Blender. Zach Reinhardt covers literally EVERYTHING you need to know about sculpting in Blender, and a bit more. If you're interested in levelling up quickly, I couldn't recommend a better course than this.

POLYCOSM aims to bring you high quality tutorials looking into concept creation from a 2D AND 3D perspective; taking a concept from a rough sketch and turning it into a fully visualised 3D model.
The channel is run by Freelance artists Christina Myrvold and Omercan Cirit who both work in the entertainment industry on a full-time basis.
We want to show you how to come up with creative ideas, use reference efficiently and how to generate different concepts in the 2D stage that can be then interpreted by a 3D artist in a full, detailed production pipeline.
Lastly, we want to share technical tips and tricks, showcase different 2D and 3D workflows and just create awesome art together!

NOTE: Sculpt Vertex Painting is now an experimental feature, and has to be enabled in the preferences panel. So it's not a bug, the developers are just turning it off because it's not ready yet and still needs to be developed further. Under «Interface» in Blender Preferences, check «Developer Extras» under Display. The «Experimental» tab should pop up on the left. drive.google.com/file/d/1kcirGJab98pgCOhlAKxxK5NtN07xnA6F/view?usp=sharing

Wow these are great for navigation. Thank you!
No problem! 😄
Thank you. I'm really excited to try it out, as I use blender just to augment 2d painting and I really want to paint in sculpt mode. : ) Thanks for pointing that out and saving time.
No problem, best of luck! 😄
Hey, sorry to be a bother given you might not know what the issue is on my computer, but I have Blender 2.9 and after enabling Developer Extras, I only see the Debugging experimental features, I don't see the prototypes or new features. If you might guide me in the correct direction for where my problem must've started I'd appreciate it greatly.
Edit: I think these features are now on Blender 2.92 and that's why I wasn't able to find them. Still, thank you for the amazing tutorial, I didn't know this feature existed.
Wow you're explaining this so well, I don't think this can be done any better. What a great, super helpful tutorial.
Aww, thanks Pervelle! 😄 Glad you found it useful ☺️
I just realize that the vertex color has not supported in multires or subdivision modifier yet. Scratching my head for two hours for why the brush stroke was not showing LOL
Trying this out in Blender 3.2.0 Alpha, and happy to report it now has color palettes. :)
Thank you for sharing this. Very inspiring, specially how you explain with details and key press. Perfect!
My pleasure! 😄😁
Thanks!
You’re welcome ☺️
Great video, thanks a lot. I recently painted with the old vertex color mode and it was so slow. By the way I have a tip for picking the right color. Switch the shading of the viewport to flat and you can see and pick the right color.
Ahhh, that’s brilliant! I feel silly for not having thought of that. 🙃 Thanks, Erik! Glad you enjoyed the video 😄
Thank you!
You’re most welcome! ☺️
Me encanta como explicas las cosas. 🥳 👌🏻
Aww, gracias amigo! ☺️😄
Awesome!!!( Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Me puede servir como tips, Gracias flaca un abrazo!
El gusto es mio! (Hopefully that translates correctly 😆👌)
you can make color palette as jpg in gimp or krita and color pick in blender using image editor window. I find Blender kinda buggy when I close and reopen the file I am working that it doest save the palette I created sometimes, so I always use this technique to avoid making color palette in Blender. (Extra tip) and I go to File > External data> Check automatically pack into .blend so it will pack what ever image I open in Blender.
Oooh, that is clever, Phal! Thanks for sharing that little tip with us! 😄😁
How do you sculpt with the texture colors still on
hi, can we export this painted model as a fbx ? I mean how can I convert the vertex paint to a texture ? is it possible
you are beautiful...thank you for the tutorial!
You’re most welcome! 😄☺️
Can you help how can I Enable this in blender 2.93
Cant find a paint brush in 2.93 or v3, it just isn't there in the space where your brushes sit - any idea why? reset to factory defaults downloaded blender to a different machine ... and still no visible brush in the menu which is fully scrolled down hmmm
cant find "enable experimental features" sculpt mode is same and i cannot paint in that mode.
Still dont understand how to enable it.
Under «Interface» in Blender Preferences, check «Developer Extras» under Display. The «Experimental» tab should pop up on the left. ☺️
couldn't find this amazing feature in the official release😞
Check out the pinned comment. 😉 In the alpha release, go to Experimental and hook on the «Sculpt Vertex Painting» option under Preferences. 😊
@@POLYCOSM ohh thanks so much
great vid but when i open up 2.9, the sculpt vertex paint brush is not there
See my pinned comment - you now have to enable the feature in the «Experimental» tab ☺️
@@POLYCOSM got it. the tab in preferences thanks
@@POLYCOSM Hi I just see undo legacy and cycles debug in the experimental tab...
You need to be using the Alpha build of Blender. Google «Blender Experimental Build» and you’ll find it 😉
Has this vertex sculpt paint being disabled in the 2.90 release?
I can't find it anywhere in the experimental tab.
I only get "Undo Legacy" and "Cycles Debug" as options
Nope! In 2.9, under «Experimental» it should be under «New Features». Right under «New Particle System». 😊
@@POLYCOSM That's weird. Under the experimental tab I only get a Debbugging tab and no New Feature or New Particle System :(
Are you a 100% sure you’re using the Experimental Alpha version of Blender and not the Beta??
@@POLYCOSM I was using the the 2.9.0 release then I downloaded the beta and now I finally downloaded the 2.9.1 alpha and the missing features were there. Thank you :)
No problem! Glad we finally figured this out, haha! Have fun with the new feature 😄💪
I love how laughy you are. Might as well have fun with it, right!? lol
Haha, exactly! 😄😋
I download Blender 2.92. I went to «Interface» in Blender Preferences, check «Developer Extras» under Display. The «Experimental» tab pop on the left.
However, under this Experimental tab only appear "Debugging Tab" (with Undo Legacy and Cycle Debug) and I don't see any option to choose
New Feature and Sculpt Vertex Color.
Any advice ?
To clarify, In the Sculpt Tool I don't see any Vertex Paint Tool as well.
Thank you in advance,
Adam
Hi Adam, you need to be using the Alpha version and not the Beta version of Blender. 😊 Hope that helps!
@@POLYCOSM how to download the alpha version ? Any link?
Here you go: builder.blender.org/download/
Is this available in 2.92? It doesn't appear in my sculpt menu buttons and it doesn't appear in the Experimental part of the Preferences window either.
You need to download the Alpha version of Blender to access Experimental features that are still in the works. (Search Blender Experimental Builds)
@@POLYCOSM Thank you for your reply. Does that include any Alpha version? 2.93 is in Beta but 3 is in Alpha. Still, they caution you about downloading the experimental stuff. Have you had any experience with them?
All of the Alpha versions, yes. 😊 As long as you’re not doing super important work, the Alpha is usually quite stable. You might experience unexpected crashes here and there, but as long as you save often, it shouldn’t be too much of a bother. I do all of my client work on Alpha builds and haven’t had any files get corrupted so far or had any bad experiences. 😊
does not work on latest alpha build :( I did all of the enabling in settings, but I see no new brushes! I do get "Sculpt Vertex Painting" on the right menu though...
I think you also need to enable the option to show brushes and tools that have no thumbnail. Tried that? ☺️
@@POLYCOSM thanks for the reply! where is that option?
Here: i.imgur.com/XuhxHy4.png
In the 2.91 Alpha build, not the beta. 😉
@@POLYCOSM thanks so much!! I totally missed that. Working great here. Also digging the Alpha. seems relatively stable
No problem! ☺️ Yeah, it’s fairly stable but I’ve experienced a lot of crashes with it, so save often! 😄
Boss
💩
Too bad, as of 2.91 is still nowhere when you turn on Developer Extras :(
I think you’re using the Beta version - for developer’s extras you need to be using the Alpha version. 😊
@@POLYCOSM Yeah, I know. Just thought they would roll it out with the new beta but it seems they still need to iron it out a little more before making it appear in subsequent betas. Also thanks for sharing this. I'm learning texture painting and trying to figure out which features of Blender to use to achieve that without turning my computer into the spiting image of a snail with rheumatism 😆
Hopefully they’ll have it out early in the new year 🤞 Ahaha, I feel your pain, dude 🤣
Your very beautiful 😍
У меня blender сразу отключается, как только я включу shader editor)) or rendered mode just on simple cube))))))))
Hmm, that's odd! Which version of Blender are you using? If your computer is very old, that might be the issue.
@@POLYCOSM latest)just i broke video card in my laptop))
Ahhh that’s a shame, I’m sorry. ☹️
the female 3d bob ross
Ahaha, I am NOWHERE near as talented as the original Bob Ross 😂😂👌
Blender does one thing well, and that is crashing. Its been like that for a long time. There are far better programs out there, which cut thru nonsense and let u work, and at the same time enjoy the creative process.
