    Good tip about shaving the legs 3days before the race. That's something everyone here should keep in mind! All those fancy aero suits use fabrics with little irregularities in the surface. Explaining the physics behind this will take too long. Stubble's (like a 3day beard or 3day leg hair) are also irregularities on the surface of your skin, and they have the same effect as the fabric of those suits.

I think you implied that shaving your legs 3 days before a TT was aerodynamically BETTER than cleanly shaven legs, am I correct? • @yannhaffner6124
      @yannhaffner6124 Před 4 lety

      Actually it is more a problem of airflow turbulence near the surface. In this region there is an area called boundary layer where there the flow has low momentum and energy due to the adherence condition at the surface. The textured surface produced by short hair will force turbulence in the flow near the surface which will energize this boundary layer and prevent flow separation from the surface of the legs and thus reduce the drag. It's quite analog to the golf ball which is dimpled and not smooth to reduce drastically its drag through the same flow mechanism.
      For leg hair, the results are quite important I think (maybe we talk about 6-8 % drag reduction, so something around 15 watts I guess or around a minute on a TT race).
