  • From 1841-45 Brunel began to build a railway but turbulent Italian politics, bureaucracy and constant interference caused him to withdraw. Although he did not build the line, I wanted to ride the rails in his wake and see more of his world. Since the video was recorded, I learnt that the line ascended the east bank of the River Polcevera on what remains as the local line that passes through many river-side villages and only three tunnels, before descending along the route of the River Scrivia . This video was recorded on the Brunel route. The other line was built in the1880s. Both lines run parallel in the mountain pass at Ronco Scrivia and unite at Arquata Scriva, a few miles north from this video location.

The Italian trains impressed me with their regularity, speed, comfort, reasonable costs and frequency.
