Michael Turner is a semi-retired secondary school supply teacher of PE and humanities who founded The Drake Exploration Society on 9 November 1996 at the Golden Hind Chair in the Bodleian Library Oxford, England. Since 1980, Michael has documented pictorially the life and voyages of Sir Francis. Two of his illustrated lectures addressed Britain's largest lecturing body, The Ashridge Circle and the illustrious Royal Geographical Society. Michael's work and desire to locate Drake's Cophin of Lead, attracted much regional, national, and international media coverage. This culminated in a BBC2 documentary that he called In Drake's Wake and was screened 400 years after the death of Sir Francis. Michael continues to photograph Drake locations and has embarked upon documenting the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He is now seeking a publisher for his manuscripts on Brunel and Drake. Michael's videos reflect his other interests at home and abroad.

This is an afternoon tour of two oases through attractive rocky scenery. Destinations are reached in vehicles with drivers enthusiastically driving at speed up and over very steep sand dunes eliciting shrills of excitement and disbelief from the passengers. Litter did concern me.

This oasis is near the town of Siwah. The immediate surrounds of the pool remain natural, yet I was horrified to find plastic water bottles on the ground despite there was a bin nearby.

Siwah is certainly worth a visit, notwithstanding it is 200 miles from the nearest town of Marsa Matruh and seven hours from Alexandria. I was delighted that Siwah was off the radar for Father Christmas.

Here we see the pipes with their caged taps, the input and output of water through reservoirs. Water is then piped beneath the ground throughout Siwah to avoid evaporation.

Reaching this famous location has become much easier and faster compared with the stone trail in 1977. That year, I arrived on top of a Bedouin supply lorry with raw potato and a pint of water. The elevated photographic view is worth framing.

I first visited this stretch of coastline when one could only sleep on the beaches under the stars. A tin shack cafe and a toilet were the only amenities, This video was shot where the photographer stood to create the 1977 postcard.

Sadly, the 2 Czech heroes, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, were betrayed by their partner Karel Čurda who was secretly a Czech Nazi collaborator during World War II.
The Nazis went berserk and in a reprisal committed the Lidice massacre which was the complete destruction of the entire village of Lidice in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, which is now a part of the Czech Republic. In June 1942 on orders from Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and acting Reichsprotektor Kurt Daluege, successor to Reinhard Heydrich. It has gained historical attention as one of the most documented instances of German war crimes during the Second World War, particularly given the DELIBERATE KILLING OF CHILDREN. The death toll was 340 including 82 children who exterminated later after they were transferred to Chełmno. There were 7 children who were considered racially suitable and thus eligible for Germanisation, they were handed over to SS families. Sick! More than 13,000 people were ultimately arrested and tortured, including the girlfriend of Jan Kubiš, Anna Malinová, who died at Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. They did this due to frustration at not being able to capture the 2 heroes alive. Nazi officials in the Protectorate carried out an extensive search for the two men. Eventually, the Germans found them, along with other paratroopers, hiding in Cyril and Methodius Cathedral in Prague. After a six-hour gun battle, in which the Germans lost 14 and sustained wounds to 21 others, Gabčík and the others, with the exception of Kubiš, who was seriously wounded by a grenade, committed suicide before the Nazis could take them alive in the church catacombs. Kubiš died of his wounds shortly after arrival at the hospital. I hate Nazis.

I am THRILLED with the prospect of reading this book about Gene Pitney! He was always my very favorite. When this gentleman started singing, he had the same intonation (accent) as Gene did. He sounded like he could pass for his brother. Of course, he didn't sound like him when he spoke with his British accent. British accents never were detected while singing, not even with the Beatles. I'd bet Gene would be over the moon knowing that someone in the UK would write this book as he always loved that part of the world. I can hardly wait to read it!
