Chien Chung Wei is very talented and entertains his audiences with his playfulness and sense of humor. I wish I could study under this master. He talks about five and nine a lot in his work. Five generally being "patches" or areas of mass and how they work together. He was showing how to solve the problem of the white mass and whether to make it warm, or cool, or what. If cool, it would cut the composition in half thus separating the two areas of the surface in half. If warm, it would join with the other warm masses. A lot of what he sees is not about objects but rather about composition of warm and cools, light and dark masses to move the eye harmoniously through the piece. Like a floral arrangement of five flowers (odd number more natural than even number), the masses are arranged to allow the eye to explore in a certain way. Objects in the painting are the surface matter but the real power of the painting is in the composition.
I'd love to take a workshop. This man is my favorite wc painter on the planet.

When he makes the comparison with GO game. Is he saying that every thing you do (putting a dot in GO, or making a mark in watercolors) with watercolors has to be part of a strategy that will have repercussions in the long run, so you better don't put brushstrokes or colors "just because" here and there, but that you have to give it some thought before? Did i got it right?
