The problem with the residuals argument is that these streaming studios like Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros, ect…. Is that they refuse to show there viewership numbers to the actors, writers, and directors. If they did that than the unions and the AMPTP could have an open and honest dialogue on what reasonable residuals compensation would look like.
John, you're forgetting about customer loyalty and retention!
You can cancel any month if you don't think there is a show you want to watch and just resubscribe 3 or 4 months from now when your favorite show is back.
I suggest John watches or listens to the Pod Save America episode where they had Adam Conover on because he doesn't seem to understand how residuals can work with streaming.
That was a great episode!
It's more like the WGA strikes have been going on for 3 months and the AMPTP has been unwilling to negotiate in good faith with the WGA until now.
@@CarlOake why are you bootlicking for?
The amptp hasn’t been at the negotiating table till now
that is the streamer's problem, pay the writers
Exactly
Lmao 3 months. Unreal.
I think that it's inevitable that streaming will eventually become universally ad based. It's the only way actors/writers get their residuals while also making streaking services profitable (especially when it comes to old shows)
Yeah, I think ads are gonna make a comeback. That's what made the whole think profitable. Radio was first ads with a little entertainment in between. Ads are a core component to profitability.
Why doesn't John talk as in-depth as he is now about his doubts regarding residuals when Kris is in the room? I'd like to hear her response to his argument.
Also Music Streamers like Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal already have a royalty based remuneration though the rates they pay is up for debate.
When you say that a streamer like Netflix makes more money off of subscribers *not* watching content, that very much sounds akin AMC A-List. That service makes money because people subscribe to it but then don't make use of it like gym memberships.
I'd be curious as far as what other residual models could be considered to help writers in-between shows if the view based one has some issues that might not work as well.
The compromise that I could see happening as far as residuals go is to put a cap on the residual-collection period. Streamers pay residuals within a certain window (maybe 6 months after the last episode releases).
A cap on a collection period is problematic because the studios don’t pay on time.
What about setting aside a fixed percentage of the monthly fee to go towards a viewer based residual model, where the shows are awarded a slice of that percentage based on how many views they generated compared to the total views of all shows on the platform?
That way the streamers have a fixed expense out of a fixed income (so they don’t get into debt by having a fluctuating expense with a fixed income) and artists get more money out of the available pie if their show is bringing more people to the platform, regardless of if the show is new or old.
That was my suggestion as well
Netflix also just doesn't need to pay Dave Chapelle $20mil per special. They're horrible at budgeting money
132 million people watched Chappelle’s specials in 30 days 🤣 I think they got their money’s worth lol
@MasonDixieLloydMusa My point being, does Dave need $20mil for a 1 hour special? Is $10mil enough? That many people tuning in for 1 hour of content doesn't do much for the longevity of Netflix's profit. Pay Dave less, spend more on good creators to make quality content that people will return for.
@@MaguffinMan the demand for his product WARRANTS his compensation. It’s called supply and demand lol tithe problem is not with Dave getting paid what he’s worth bro. It’s with studios shortchanging everyone other than stars because they can. The last thing we need it’s artists fighting amongst other artists. You’re doing EXACTLY what they want you to do lol it’s like when people complain about susperstar athletes getting paid so much. Ummm, they generate the money by selling out games, getting their jerseys and shoes bought, and having great TV ratings when they play.
The problem is with the corporations lying about profits to justify shortchanging people who typically don’t have much power to fight it. Get your priorities right
@MasonDixieLloydMusa I was just using Dave as an example for their spending $$ on short term content I won't return for.
I use to look forward to so many shows they produced and now I don't care. Then they raise their prices and produce reality shows
I hope this is meaningful and not a PR stunt.
They can just do a model similar to sports leagues. The studios keep a certain percentage of revenue and the rest gets split up among the shows by viewership with the top shows getter higher percentages. From there the residuals get paid to the actors, writers, etc based on the individual contracts.
Streaming services after the Shows main release, should either license out the show OR just put ads on old content and that way they can pay a % based on initial popularity and then also pay ad residuals
Running ads is an interesting idea, bc you're adding monetization. The big issue becomes viewership. On TV, commercials run regardless of who or how many are watching content. With streaming, ads play when content is viewed.
Streaming needs to and will be outlawed by the government. Nobody will miss it. I have never streamed a thing and never will.
@@stanfordite1 ok, but there are still millions that do use it, this is like saying "i dont want cds my cassette tapes are better"
They should just get a cut of ad revenue instead of residuals
Way more ppl have subscriptions without ads
@@Gamechanger100vibe they are just starting to be rolled out. While linear media keeps trending down, it will give the opportunity for ad supported to grow in share along with overall price increases in premium non-ad
So will ai be banned permanently?
nah, that genie is out of the bag. The question is how it'll be used. As long as it's used as a tool in the hands of the writers to help them with their work I think it's beneficial. What should be banned is producers using it as a tool to replace writers and reduce human writers to glorified proofreaders.
Yes. Yes it will. Anyone who uses AI will be going to jail.
Solidarity to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA! Labor is entitled to all it creates.
Without a rule like the residuals, idk how you motivate a writing team to want to have the next hit show. There has to be something to give a team motivation.
Talking it out is the first step. Even if it takes the whole rest of the year, at least they are starting to fix this.
Meanwhile, they won't allow two extra grips on heavy days. Production shits, and we physically doing shit
The Rock saved Hollywood by sitting off these donations. Can't starve out folk that keep getting million dollar donations 😂
Wow! This could be interesting. I don't know if everything will lead to the end of the writers' strike and the actors' strike yet, but we'll have to wait and see at this point.
The ad model doesn't need to change. Residuals should be based on the portion of that subscription fee and the ad fee they are getting for each showing. You can't build something that doesn't take these things into consideration first and then say well I did it now so you have to live with being short changed.
What if a writer uses Grammerly's ai tech to improve their writing? Are the writers prevented from using AI?
but still it would refine the grammatical errors in their draft if the writer care about it, still what he wrote will be his own
It's about time!
There’s a reason why negotiations stopped for three months. The AMPTP had a negotiating period for the writers, and they couldn’t get it figured out. And then the AMPTP had to prep for negotiations with the directors guild. Then they had to prepare to negotiate with the actors. It’s not that the AMPTP has been refusing to meet with the WGA, it’s just that they’ve been busy negotiating with two other unions.
Why not just have ads at the end?
Becuse then you will just end when finishes, when he got it in the middle you will have to reach and skip, sure might just ad 2-4 seconds of view time on his video but that will ad up with 10 000 people.
Yes, new, green writers should make less. Why the hell should they make as much as those who have put in the work refining their craft to earn places on huge, significant tent pole series?? They need to cut their teeth on smaller projects and grow their portfolio and get better at writing before trying their hand a big series
With streaming being trick with viewership based residuals. Perhaps maybe it should just be some kind of an upfront payment, just for when a show is picked up, and if it's picked up for additional seasons on a streaming service. I do still believe in paying the writers. And I know this sounds greedy, but maybe throw in a special bonus if the show is a hit on the streaming service.
...and sorry for the typo on "with streaming being TRICKY with viewership based residuals"...my bad.
I am quite happy for the studios to wait it out even if it takes 18 months because some of the strikers demands are unreasonable . There is plenty of non American content being produced that is often far superior and there are loads of old shows that I have never watched that I could spend the next year and half watching . This would be a good time for the entertainment industry to purge itself of all the activist troublemakers .
How's that boot taste mate
@@Yupstate845 Boot ?
My question is,WHY haven't they been talking in 3 months? I thought they were talking every day so why weren't they talking?
Because the big companies wanted them to fold when they couldn't pay for the houses. The only reason there talking now is because of the rock giving money to fight longer
@@_SYDGAMING_ And even with the Rocks money it wont buy them much time . The studios have the upper hand in all this . Especially those ones like Netflix who actively produce non American content .
@@tenfootgoatman2285 yeah but hopefully now that the rock donated. Hopefully other big time actors will contribute.
Either way we’re going to be paying even more for these streaming services. How quickly and how sharply those prices increase may, imo, depend on a potential new residuals deal for streaming services.
You get what you pay for
Imagine if the DGA had kept striking for the trifecta of unions striking
Ikr?
I guess the wait till the writers are broke plan has been thrown out the window.
Force Majure 4tw ?
More people doesnt necessarily mean more talent
1) Writers Room (minimum 6 writers, max 12)
A company should be able to choose the correct level of writers they need for a show (and pay accordingly), but forcing them to have bodies in a room just to meet a quto seems crazy, one of the biggest problem with current show making is budgets blowing out. companies should not agree to this.
2) Mini writers room
again similar to 1, there should be flexibility here, another thing companies should not agree to.
3) AI Restrictions
AI is here, this is saying we can now use a computer for graphic design, but all the people currently doing graphic design prefer doing it by hand even if it is slower. So we should handicap the company cause they will be able to do things faster and we get payed more if it takes longer. This is something that studio should not agree on at all.
4) Viewership based Residuals
The only sale is when the streamer buys the show to put it on the network, it actually costs them ever time some one watches it (bandwidth cost). Residuals just does not work any more
Based on this I do not see anything that the writers want that companies should agree with
Your AI opinion is ridiculous because that approach prioritizes speed and efficiency at the expense of quality.
When it comes to the number of writers on shows, I think it should be at the discretion of the show runner. If show runners can write all the episodes by themselves, all the power to them. If a show runner wants the maximum number of writers the WGA is proposing, I think that should be allowed as well.
Guess we ain't going back to work
@@jaybling6687 Exactly 100%
@@jaybling6687 I look at as a tool like a calculator, I might be able to do a calculation by hand or I can use a tool (calculator) get get results quicker and easier. You still need good people to use it, you need good people to determine the output is any good and if it is not how it could be improved. It is just a tool, you still need good/quality people to use it. I just dislike ban it just to make things worse so the employee can make more money.

Hopefully to get rid off these writers and replace with al. Its not like they care about us ppl that al robots are replacing us. As soon its about them omg. Let's worry about our self and not the ppl who don't even care.
