- Finally getting around to my review of the UGREEN NAS. The device that is going to be replacing my TerraMaster unit that has been storing everything on my home networks for years! This NAS from a hardware side is nearly perfect, and it will be fun watching the software improve.

So much more I wanted to cover, but this video was already way too long. One thing I'd like to note is the mobile application is awesome, BUT it current does not have automated photo backup. If they had this, it would be HUGE for me. Regardless, to check out the mobile app and more check the description for the related videos.
Great video, and will be taking a peak into it. Quick question, what keyboard did you have in the video? Co working is looking for a new keyboard and that looks like it might fit what they are looking for.
As a tech geek I don't want something I can just plug in and know it will work; I want to build (and have built) something which is just pure jank and does a ton of other weird stuff that would never usually be wise to incorporate into a NAS.
I made a really janky Zima board NAS build I while ago. Actually, worked really well. There is a video of it if interested.
One of the best reviews so far!
Someone found another way to load the BIOS. I think the key combo was Shift+F12
The problem with "end-user" NAS solutions is that most of the people looking at these types of products are also people who probably know how to build their own NAS using things they have on hand. It is a matter of question, "Do you prefer DIY over just works solution?"
I would probably custom OS it after buying so it is rather not a solution for me.
Yes and no. I’ve run Linux since 1998. Worked professionally with it since 2002. Im very comfortable managing NAS and SAN solutions in the enterprise for my day job so I could easily roll my own at home and that is exactly what I used to do but these days I prefer to go with a purpose built solution with my data storage. I have backups so it’s not a data loss worry. It’s a time thing. I prefer to spend my free time learning new things not managing my NAS and considering how cheap (compared to my time) home NAS solutions like these are it’s well worth the investment for me personally.
Lazy people do exists. Hi!
I could probably build my own but it's too time consuming and stressful troubling shooting. This is a bit more money than I'd care to pay considering they have no pedigree like Synology. How does a Chinese brand get to compete with the big boys right off the bat? Such arrogance.
Kickstarter only available in the US and Germany.
That sucks...I wanted to get on with this Kickstarter offer and couldn't do it (UK)
Thanks for the video, this looks very promising! Especially after installing TrueNAS.
I’m starting to wonder if using a Thunderbolt connected eGPU would be possible when VM support in UG OS becomes a thing. Either that or just load up Proxmox or something ,…..
NAS!! So many possibilities!!
I plan to get a NAS at some point and use ethernet to connect it to my Wi-Fi mesh router. And use Wi-Fi to the NAS to do a daily backup of my main laptop. Especially since they have been doing away with a 2nd hard drive in laptops as I'd use that to make backups to.
I will be very curious how you are using this in 3 months. Will you give up on the software and install something else.
I was curious about this. The thing that made me not back it was that I couldn't get a straight answer about what date their software does and can collect. I handle a lot of stuff subject to fairly stringent NDAs and security agreements. I loved the just plug it in and I can stream the videos anywhere, but need to know that the files and their data is not accessible by the company.
Valid reasons. You can install other OS that you trust.
Synology is great but the h/w specs are pretty jank. Glad to see these pushing to much better stuff, like N100 for a minimal starting point.
I appreciate the review, was just curious are there NASes that use NVMe drives or is it only HDDs?
Ugreen does have a NVMe NAS.
They are starting to appear from all vendors still pretty new. And is beeing offered also by Ugreen DXP480T
Nice video, thank you. The hw is powerful, but the lack of apps is disappointing.
I am always cautious when a company send their products to every content creator. I just think there is something off. I could be wrong.
that keyboard is awesome... what is it?
It's a shame that it only realistically allows BTRFS.
That NAS looks awesome, but I REALLY hate BTRFS.
It's tolerable when working with someone else's system, but ZFS is the only filesystem I could ever use on my own storage pools.
Is there any reason to get a 3.5" drive NAS over a 2.5" drive NAS?
Which keyboard r u using?
Wery good quality video
I'll take your old NAS, thank you very much!
What keyboard is he using?
I hope this forces Synology to upgrade their hardware.
Every content creator and their mothers. That's funny. But so true.
I would get one if it supported ECC.
Great video as always 👍 Great channel.
Free advice: don't go for kickstarter. Not worth the risk of not getting rewarded. Kickstarter is not shopping. Project backers should be prepared to accept a complete loss of funds without recourse.
Kindest regards, neighbours and friends.
P.S. Is there a timeline where some units already were unsuccessfully marketed for 6+ months within a big, non-US market? In such a hypothetical, isn't unsold overstock a better name for some models or vapourware for others? Putatively, don't bankruptcy-remote corporate subsidiaries under certain jurisdictions drive market selectivity and information asymmetry between project backers and project creators? Just tin-foiling here. Keep fast and decide in your sole and exclusive discretion.
But, you know, you can just press ctrl+f12 to get to the Ugreen BIOS.
They don't get updated because they don't want to say its good.
Man, it seems like such good NAS boxes, especially for the Kickstarter price, so I'm just salty about it being US and Germany only. My country is even right next to Germany :(
Me also... PT is part of EU like DE is... :/
What a shame the kickstarter is (was) only for US and Germany. That left a lot of us out of the fun.
"to everyone and their mother"....meanwhile me trying to find a 2nd hand pc or laptop so that i can do my project
Very good review, thank you!
Small note that the background can really be distracting/annoying.
What about the background?
@@TechHut background noise (sorry)
@@sushisoup6840 yeah I had one of the NAS units running right next to me. Not the best move on my end, apologies.
Thank you for the video. You may have already heard this by now, but it was put out a short while ago that you can enter the bios by hitting CTL + F12 at the sane time.

Edit: Added link for reference.
All these videos sound like ads for ugreen they really spent on advertisements with every CZcamsr
Does it run PLEX ?
Yes you can run plex in docker which is my preferred way these days.
You mean psu not pcu 😂😂😂
Lol Ugreen..... Lets meet here in 2 years and see if you're still pushing out updates. Once you have everyones $$$$ make sure you are still updating your software in many years to come
These NAS are all sold out :/. Such good prices for the kickstarter prices
It is not sold out, I still see them up for sale, $649 is dirt cheap for a 6 bay NAS at this caliber of specs...I grabbed one
Way to expensive. Same with Synology. These boxes are way too expensive for what they are.
We still have to purchase drives to fill these boxes. By the time you are done completing the build for these boxes, It's going to come out around $2000 or more 🤷♀🤦♂
8:42 Why would you install edge? does bill gates hold you at gunpoint?🧐 To confirm just breathe in your next video.
🧐 mate.it's ain't a bad browser.i also like to use it along side Firefox.
@@ohno5007edge has a stupid sidebar and AI built in.
@@ohno5007 Edge is just a worse version of chrome.
@@samuelhulme8347 but those are the things I like about Microsoft edge.
Edge has its up’s and downs. It is extremely efficient and lightweight, and supports extensions. The AI integration is a hit or miss depending on how annoying or useful it is.
Am I the only one skeptical handing all my private data over to a Chinese company?
Aren't we all! However Synology, QNAP and ASUSTOR is Taiwanese. And yes they all have smaller branch companies in China.
They are sending this NAS to every CZcamsr I follow 😁
Great hardware, software... Well, not so good
Testing out TrueNAS on it for a bit before I completely migrate over my UNRAID instance from my old NAS :)
