  • Checking out and giving my first impressions on the enhanced remastered edition of Quake 1 from Nightdive Studios! Not a full review and I didn't do any research beforehand, I just hooked up a modern gaming PC to some retro peripherals and started playing and rambling at 1024x768. It's pretty neat stuff.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: The Nightmare difficulty in this port is Hard, but you're locked at half normal health. This actually makes the game harder as the OG Nightmare difficulty had Ogres, Deathknights and Scrags largely stay immobile and just spam projectiles at you. Made it very easy to pick them off at long ranges. It does make Shamblers and Vores easier, however, since they're slower to attack than OG Nightmare. That said, the game doesn't throw a lot of either at you so it makes the game overall harder since the melee monsters will actually box you in more. Plus 50 HP cap. Also unlike OG Nightmare, monsters can be stunned here.

    5:31 No.. they never added the soundtrack back in the original due to copyright issues. In short, because the soundtrack was made by Nine Inch Nails, they were "owned" by a record company like most musicians. So the record company also owns Quake soundtrack and they made the decision to not allowed them to have the soundtrack in mp3 with the game files, but instead they are recorded tracks on the CD of the game like a regular audio CD. So the only way they work is by having the CD on the driver at all times while playing. With digital copies.. the soundtrack is obviously missing and id doesn't own the rights for it.
    Because this remaster is actually a new release and being sold on consoles.. they had to license the soundtrack back to have it in the game.

      @kaitlyn__L Před 2 lety +1

      Of course, that had the benefit of letting you play the game music in any CD player. And licensing issues notwithstanding it wouldn’t have inherently prevented later releases from including it, even if you needed to accept the hard drive space hit from the PCM, or patch the game to play compressed versions. So the main roadblock was presumably licensing, or rather lack of desire to go back and re-license, until now. Since evidently getting the music licensed again wasn’t impossible either once the parties came together.

    • @EC18FEA30B
      @EC18FEA30B Před 2 lety +5

    • @krank23
      @krank23 Před 2 lety +7

      When Q1 was released, mp3 playback was a pretty big deal for a lot of computers. Redbook audio was common not because of some weird licensing or DRM but because it allowed developers to offload music to the CD-ROM - which delivered the raw audio to the sound card via a separate cable. The CPU didn't need to be involved at all. Cheap and simple music playback = more CPU cycles for 3D math and game logic, which was definitely needed in this case since the original Quake release was also before 3D accelerator cards became common…

    Texture smoothing is actually the good ol’ bilinear filtering (so it will look like Glide used to, back in the day). Without it, it’s similar to software mode. Anyway, I love that they enhanced the monster animations (which were fixed at 15 fps in the original) and they are now completely smooth.

    Back in the day, my PC couldn't play Quake, so i used to rent the N64 version A LOT
    Aubrey Hodges' score and the dark fantasy settings conditioned me to play it slowly and methodically, as a survival horror before i even knew what that genre was. It always impresses me when i see Quake players running around everywhere. Imagine my surprise when i got it on Steam two years ago and it felt completely different!
    I have gotten the Switch version, it's fantastic, gyro controls feel natural for this game and running around with the controller isn't half bad. I still go through certain places slowly and methodically though, i don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
    Anyways, if you decide to get the port on any other platform aside of PC, my recommendation is one that has gyro support, both PS4/PS5 and Switch do, so... it´s your pick.
    I feel like i'm going to triple dip soon. It's been so long since Quake had a port on any console that i want to have it EVERYWHERE. Now, here's hoping Quake II follows suit, with a full fledged Quake II 64, wich was a different game altogether.

      There's a forum post about it - they are working with Bethesda to get it out and all current Quake-havers should have new Quake when it's ready for distribution. Rumor has it that it might be after the big sale going on right now.

      I never, ever disable subtitles. CZcams simply takes time to generate them and match them in regards to timing, and since this was only posted a few minutes ago it’ll unfortunately be a while. This is not something I can control, it’s simply up to Google’s system to catch up.

    Movement in this just doesn't feel right to me for some reason, it's not smooth. At least compared to some ports like vkQuake.

      @JFinns Před 2 lety

      vkQuake can run at 1000fps (well I limit to 238fps for my 240Hz g-sync monitor) but the movement on this is still great.

    Man, there's nothing like the feel of old school shooters. I'd like to say it's in the frenetic gameplay, but really, a lot of it is level design.

    For some reason I could never get into Quake. Probably because I've played FPS's that released a couple years after Quake. And can't appreciate what Quake brought to the table. However I could never get tired of DOOM. I could get physically tired from it though.

    This is a nice looking update. I really can't stand most of these HD remakes, the artistic direction is simply horrible. Their idea of a hd texture is a texture peppered with noise. They also don't seem to have any understanding on shaders, everything reflects light like wet plastic.
