  • According to pianist Sara Davis Buechner, the keys of the piano are to her ears, eyes...and stomach? - like the colors of crayons in a box. Mozart's Sonata in C major K. 545 was intended as a teaching piece for children, where his students were very likely expected to be able to transpose this deceptively simple sonata into the other 11 keys as an exercise.
Sara will perform the complete cycle of sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Alti Hall, Kyoto, Japan this coming September 2018. In this special series of short videos, Sara shares personal stories and offbeat insights into the music of this timeless master.

I believe that tonality is essence of music. And I think that your explanation proves that.

I find that playing the first movement up an octave, with the right hand one semitone higher, creates a particularly dissonant sound mildly reminiscent of Messiaen’s evocations of birdsong. Best of luck in your concerts!

another fun party game is to take intentionally polytonal music and bring it into the same key and make it a pop song.
