As brought to my attention there are grammatical mistakes within this video. I should've taken my time more with this video and looked it over better. I got frustrated due to some technical issues that kept reoccurring while making this, but even that is no excuse. The grammar within the video may not be 100% correct on the slides, but the information within this video is.

So TJ I would like to know what's up pertaining to this: Is the B5244T5 aka 4t5 2.4 better (and how so) than the B5254T4 2.5 in the R's that has more stock Horse@296? Not talking sht bud, just seriously curious. Send me any link, lead or info you can pertaining would be greatly appreciated.

@@adammacpherson1579 the reasons why the 4t5 is the best Volvo 5 cylinder for modding is all covered in this video. I don’t have links just saved off hand but you can research and look up the engine specs online, read up on the forums, and get information from various different places. The only reason why the 4t4 R engine makes more power from factory is because it comes with larger injectors from factory and a more aggressive tune that’s it. The 4t5 uses the same exact turbo, cylinder head, cams, exhaust manifold, stroke, crank, etc as the 4t4. They’re literally brother and sister engines. The differences lie in the block and pistons. The 4t4 R engine has a 2.5l block giving it a 83mm bore making the block weak and prone to cracking were as the 4t5 uses a 81mm bore (same as the 2.3l) making the block much stronger and able to handle more power. So the 4t5 is identical to the R engine but has smaller injectors from factory, a stronger 81mm bore block, smaller pistons of course due to the thicker cylinder walls, and most 4t5s use a oil pan with no oil level sensor although some European variants use the same oil pan as the R with the oil level sensor.

@@T5_T-Rell Thanx man! actually a bit of what you stated here was not in the vid but exactly what I wanted to know! I figured the block would be stronger if the difference was in bore but did not know if it was.

@@T5_T-Rell I have a modded 4T5 myself (K24 hybrid turbo, 650 cc ev14, full bolt ons), but I was not aware of the lack of an oil level sensor. Does that mean a CEL will not be triggered if I suddenly loose oil for whatever reason? Thinking I might need to set up an oil pressure gauge.

    • @T5_T-Rell
      @T5_T-Rell  Před 3 lety +4

@@SD-uj5kk yes this is exactly what happened to my OG 4t3 in my s60 T5. I checked the pcv system before buying the car and it passsed the glove test, regardless 3 months into ownership I did a bunch of general maintenance: spark plugs, coil packs, fuel filter, and pcv system. I checked the pcv system after completing the job and it passed a glove test yet again. Anyway 2-1/2 weeks later as I’m driving home from work the car blows the intake cam seal straight off the head and the car gets a massive oil leak. There was no smoke and no warning lights on the dash. The engine started knocking and then the CEL came on for knock sensor after it was already too late. I highly recommend a oil pressure gauge since most 4t5s don’t have a oil level gauge like the R.

No doubt the cost will probably go up due to this video but it’s already one of the most expensive if not the most expensive Volvo 5 cylinder on the market today. The Volvo community has already drove up the prices like crazy. Also just because it’s the best factory 5 cylinder doesn’t mean it’s the most cost effective option especially when it comes to making power.

Based on the price and how it is equipped it was a competitor to Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 5-series and Audi 100 / A6.
None of those before mentioned have such a superiour overall longtime quality.
The only thing not working on my daily driver Volvo is the AWD and that's because it was not designed to handle the added amount of torque, due to the engine mods.
Others than that it just runs and runs and runs. And boy, does it ever run 😈.
No electrical issues, no rust, just the usual bushings, brakes, timing belt, etc.
I wouldn't know what there is not to appreciate about it, besides the high fuel consumption maybe.

This Winter here in Germany was a bit colder than the last years. At 255 km/h for some minutes the water temperature did not change a degree. But I will check it in the summer and i think you are right because some parts in the engine can get really hot, eventuell in the water is at normal temperature.
      Other important things to do:
Always check the oil and don't run the engine too fast when it is cold because that can kill every turbo.

And in fact that’s probably the most I can say I’ve heard someone pay for a 4t5 or any of these older Volvo 5 cylinders. You can get a 4t3 with say 130,000 miles for $700 or less where as a 4t5 will cost $1,200-$1,500. But yes In America they are rare and expensive. I’ve already noticed from being on the world wide Volvo pages that Europe got way more facelifted p2s than America so s60 T5s and V70 T5s that came from the factory with this engine are much more common over there.

So you're right when saying the block is similar to the RNC found in s40/v50/c30. But a guy who said he worked for volvo engine development wrote that the internals are more RN than RNC. That's where the debate starts tho. BTW, I also thought the RS engine was truly RNC gen engine and the same as the s40/v50 but as pointed out, it's actually more RN and modded to be RNC A

Back when volvo made good engines and good cars. Theyve turned into a puppet ever since they were bought by chinese company geely. Now all you get is four cylinder hybrids.

I got an S60R that should be in a junkyard for dirt cheap and have actually turned it to a passable car that has been reliable. M66 transmission, original motor, and I would say the Brembo's on this car have saved my stupid young self on multiple occasions. I would cry if I lost this car I learned 75% of my knowledge as a mechanic reviving this thing, learned to drive stick, and learned what loving cars really was thru this 17 year old fucking Volvo lol. I always thought I wanted a BMW until I sat down in this thing and If you've driven one I think you can relate, there is just something so special about these cars. you think it's just another car until you feel what an M66 mated to a Volvo straight five is...

I have an xc70 2005 with the 2.5l version of the same engine -B5254T2. Firstly the 5 cylinder gives such smooth power delivery from low revs to about 5. Also highly tunable and well though out blocks. My 300k engine had the turbo finally die. So it was replaced with a k24. Some ECU work to let the engine breathe more, and my days do you feel the difference. Been driving with a bigger turbo for well over 3 years and about 40k miles, daily, without a problem. Nice cars too. Have had many opportunities to buy a much newer car, but somehow like the volvo too much.

    Great vid! Own a B5244T5 in a '07 V70 T5 260hp for a year now, and love it!
One question, what about the ‘preventive oil pressure recover measurements? Needed or not at this engine? I hear different stories, even at Volvo specialists

Well the 2.5 t is a nice one too. Mine is mildly tuned by BSR to +250hp for 300 $. Took 5 minutes. The sound is my favorite part of this car.
