    This was an absolutely awful storyline from start to finish. Liz and Jim have said and done spiteful things to each other over the years but this truly takes the cake and sinks Jim to a level that's irredeemable.
    Whatever respect and goodwill audiences had for him has now vanished. The writers of "Corrie" have ruined his character. Congrats on taking a once decent stand up husband, father and friend and turning him into a horrendous excuse for a human being.

    • @shanefolan

      @@shanefolan When we were first introduced to Jim (and the rest of the family), he was decent enough. Hard working, reliable and a good man (not perfect by any means).
      However over time, the writers on "Corrie" exploited every fault and flaw in the character so that he has now become a wretched waste of space who is toxic to everything and everyone around him.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan Před 4 lety +1

      @@woohooboy that's the soap logic though- look at Sam Mitchell in Eastenders,Kym Tate in Emmerdale [I only watched her initial comeback episodes and not the rest of her comeback where she settled in], Grant Mitchell in Eastenders, Michelle Fowler in Eastenders, Tracey Barlow in Corrie..... all have had comebacks with much criticised or noticed character transformations.

    • @woohooboy
      @woohooboy Před 4 lety +2

      @@shanefolan - Soap opera writers seem to operate under the impression that characters who come back should be more and more flawed as it creates drama.
      Whilst I understand that to a degree, in doing so it further removes who these people once were to the point where they no longer resemble the person that audiences identify with.
      Case in point Jim McDonald. The loyal hard working law abiding husband, father and friend has been replaced with a lying, manipulative criminal con artist whose prone to violent physical outbursts.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan Před 4 lety +1

      @@woohooboy Eh Jim had always being violent, even in the 90s he'd attacked several residents and beat up Liz before. He also was arrested before for harassing her and trying to break into her house. He also killed Jez.
      A better eg of a character who did a uturn was Todd Grimshaw. Sam Mitchell in Eastenders too was changed from warm and nice but in her comebacks was hard faced and bitchy and just generally out of character.

  • @kybone25
    @kybone25 Před 4 lety +28

    Some poetic justice about Liz being physically in charge here over Jim. He was no longer the violent powerful man who could dominate her. He was a feeble older man that was quite literally a push over at her mercy.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan Před 4 lety +5

      very good point, it was good to see him put in his place; for so many years he was a bully and here he's getting owned and made vulnerable.

      @MrCdawson17 Před rokem

      Um, he hit her once. I’m not defending that, but acting like he was a dominant powerful man over her, is false. She was feisty as he was angry. He hit her once. She’s also hit him numerous times. So based on that, bad as each other.
      And actually, she’s hit him more than he hit her.
      So 🤷‍♂️

    • @MrCdawson17

      Are you saying that attacking a disabled man is okay? Violence no matter what is wrong. Her attacking Jim here just makes her a hypocrite. Calling him out for his violence, while threatening him with violence after pushing him over.
      This is why he wanted revenge. Their treatment of each other is toxic. Both as bad as each other.

    I actually think it's his family's fault for the way Jim is and they should try and help him instead of abandoning him. His first lengthy stint in prison, which was caused by Steve getting involved with criminals, must have damaged him so much that he ended up with some sort of mental illness that he then resorted to robbing a bank, which would have been way out character for him before. This is the impression I always got from it. He therefore should have gotten the necessary help from his family, not being abandoned by them who are no saints themselves and in turn, causing him to go worse. This recent story, and the antics with Peter in prison could have been avoided if they were there for him to begin with, as in the state of mind he had developed, he thought he was doing something for his family. I just think it's sad how they've been writing the McDonald family in recent years, especially when you look at their heyday in the 90's.

      Absolutely. What they did with Jim’s character was completely bizarre to me, he was one of the most popular characters and they turned him into a psychopath out of nowhere, he went down in 2011 for robbing a bank which although was a daft thing to do he was just trying to get the money together so that him and Liz could buy the rovers, fast forward to 2014 they’ve all abandoned him, refuse to see him in prison etc, why? Then he comes back in 2018 with this pathetic storyline. Jim was never a psychopath or anything of the sort like they tried to portray him in the later years. Terrible writing.

      @@dogsbollocksgenius9480 That armed robbery storyline was still ridiculously out of character. No way Jim in the 90s would ever do that. It's funny they won't talk to Jim after that, despite all of Steve's crimes in the 90s and they'll happily welcome Tracy into the family, despite that she murdered someone and even lied to Steve that Becky pushed her downstairs and caused her to lose their twins, when in fact she miscarried.

Oh yes, and Steve and Becky were also planning on committing child abduction at the time of the armed robbery story too. They seriously need to look at how hypocritical it is not to talk to Jim anymore after the armed robbery. Anyway, that armed storyline was ridiculously out of character as it is, I'm trying to make sense of it because that was bad writing too.

Even actresses like Dot Cotton from Eastenders in their 90s stand out as some of the strongest actors on British tv. Just the whole delivery of the lines and the performance here, seems forced and unnatural, it is like you are aware he is acting. Hard to actually explain exactly how-some actors and performances just come across as really bad on screen. Other examples would be Vicky Fowler in eastenders from the early noughties-very unnatural or the actress who played Danny dyer's daughter,Nancy carter, always seemed very forced and unnatural. Don't get me wrong, he was decent back in his day but as far as I'm aware he has being doing very little acting work in the past decade so you can see how his skills would diminish. Charles Lawson was quite 1 dimensional though-his only time he was interesting and acted well was when he was angry. It shows here that he didn't have great range in his acting ability as he couldn't deliver this scene.
      Actors to appear natural should be believable and it just comes out as natural onscreen and you forget they are acting- I think the actress who plays Sharon's son Dennis in Eastenders comes across as very believable or the actress who plays Tiffany Butcher works well on screen. Shane Richie is another very bad one imho. It is a craft, some people carry it off well and others don't.
