I practice in CA and a judge told me that I was out of order and told me to shut my mouth. I thought he was wrong so you know what I said? "Will do, your honor" and I kept my damn mouth shut. The case settled that day and I was able to go home to the family and enjoy my night. Never argue with a judge. You will always lose.

Years ago, one of my students had to write a six page paper (using all lines front and back) because he started a fire in the school restroom. I was his English teacher and special ed case manager. This kid hated writing with a passion and stayed after school with me for an hour everyday for weeks writing that paper. He was in misery everyday (I was in misery, too). He kept saying, " Why didn't they put me in jail? This is horrible." I would say keep writing and gave him ideas about what to write about fire safety.
I told the fire marshal that the judge chose the perfect punishment. I told the student that if he got in trouble with the law again that he would have to write a 12 page for me. He was a perfect student for the rest of the year.
Great story! Who decided on that punishment? I love seeing effective discipline that doesn’t ruin kid’s lives the way something like an arson conviction would!

My brother made the basketball coach mad and his buddy was my brothers english teacher who said he had to write an essay on basketball and he wrote I hate basketball 100s of times and dropped out of school.

I've never experienced the pressure of being in a courtroom before but the idea of arguing with the judge seems insane to me.

This guy was found in contempt of the court and all he had to do was pay an insignificant fine and spend 15 minutes buying cheap lunch. This was not an abuse of authority at all. If the judge was going for jail time without a reasonable alternative that’s different.

I fkn love that first judge!! One of the best discipline methods I ever learned, that worked like magic for our son, who came from the foster system was PAPERWORK. When he violated someone safety at school or home he was immediately grounded no privileges (like phone) and given a worksheet we were willing to check once per day. The questions were 1. What happened, do not blame-shift. You better Star in the story. 2. Who was affected. 3. What do you need to do about it? 4. What would you do differently.
Then it got signed and dated and filed in my binder of shame. All of his violent and aggressive behaviors eventually stopped he hated doing it so much. It was awesome. Made him do all the work to get out of trouble, improved his writing skills and now I have a binder of some bull💩 we can laugh about now.

He might’ve had some angry fee fees at the time but he’s better off for having learned self control while he lived here. Now he’s 18, working and supporting himself. I served on a jury a month ago here in Canada and we were given 100 dollars a day. I was hoping the trial would last longer because that's more than I make at work each day!

That is not bad! I'm Canadian and was a juror in the late 90s and we only got $16 per day! Even then it was very little money. Nice to hear it went up. They probably had more jurors refusing to go.

I have been called 3 times in my life so far for jury duty. I am now 60 years old. The second time I was called I was actually picked and ended up even being jury foreman. I was proud to do that and even to this day I am proud I was able to do that. I was a stay at home mom and as my children got older I wished that I could volunteer for jury duty as I did not have a job I had to be at so it caused no hardship for me to attend. Unfortunately you can't ask to do this. But this young juror should have taken her opportunity seriously enough to pay attention when the judge was speaking, especially to the jurors!! 3 days in jail should make her more attentive in the future.
That woman was lying. It's pathetic that she acts like a teenager caught and making up a rediculous lie. If she thinks anyone believes that "everybody was talking" while the judge was addressing the rules to the jury, she's crazy.

Anything that hits as over 30% AI, they typically require you to show proof that you did the work. However, if he just pays someone to write it, idk how they would catch that.

I work for the Federal Govt and my coworker told me he had jury duty on Monday. He wasn't quite complaining just grumbling a little. I said, "Better us than other people. We get paid our normal wages, and some people don't. I'd rather it be me than someone who's going to lose pay." He told me he never thought about it that way. Afterwards he was more willing to go. So, I'd be down for a 9 month trial.
That's why they have so much trouble finding jurors in this case. If the money the government gives the jurors doesn't equal a salary on which people can live on, who can afford to spend a minimum of nine months sitting on the jury box for this trial? How many companies are going to keep somebody's position waiting for them after such a long time? No wonder they have so much trouble finding jurors for this trial. Unless you are a trust fund baby who doesn't work or study, completely retired citizen or a civil servant who gets compensated anyway, you won't have the money to support yourself.
There was lady at the beginning of the Parkland trial that she said that she had a sugar daddy, so that she had to pay attention to him. That was her reason to request to be granted leave from jury duty. The jurdge accepted that and excused her. This lady was even interviewed by at least one local news channel, on which she repeated that her sugar daddy would stop paying her rent and bills if she was not available.

I never grounded a kid. They learn nothing from it. My kids wrote me essays containing what they did, why, and what would have been a better choice. I would proof it and they would rewrite it. Once I was happy with it the situation was over. Granted, I was blessed with well behaved kids. We aren’t talking drugs and stealing here but they had to think about whatever was stepping over the line. I produced wicked strong writers! I’d do it exactly the same today.
I know personally...being a full time mom, having to do an effing 20-page paper (due every week) for grad school, APA formated, cited sources, 100% coherent with NO plagiarism...I mean, damn! I feel his pain. I would have loved to throw money at it! 😂

Opportunity cost
Was a juror in a criminal case, that changed my life in many ways and appreciate our courts so much more than ever. It was very stressful and it was really hard even having just one person who didn't pay attention or not follow directions well. She knew what she was doing and she didn't care about anyone but herself.
You see that when she argues with the judge. Just stupid.

I love how measured you are, Bruce, with everything you reflect over. I have just turned 50, and I remember flying off the handle. Not knowing when to shut up or stopping to think before acting. However, thank god with age, I now feel much more measured. I really think before I speak. Know when to speak and resonate with everything you're talking about.

Bruce, your words ring really fucking true. I had a shit day at work today and was veeerrryyy vocal about it, and I was lucky that my boss didn't hear it. Keeping your mouth shut when you're heated is a skill I need to practice.
I was lucky enough to grow up watching my parents let their mouths regularly get them in trouble. Taught me a really good lesson in "the pen is mightier than the sword" very early on, that I'm rather grateful for.

The Chief Judge in our Federal District Court, allows no using of cell phones in his court. There are several notifications outside and inside the courtroom. He also has a rather large fish tank in his chambers. If anyone’s cellphone is exposed or makes any noise during session, he asks the bailiff to confiscate it, and drop it in the fish tank. Everyone in the building is very aware of the wreckage of cellphones at the bottom of his tank.
I’ve seen judges excuse bad behavior many times, it’s really refreshing to see one actually follow through on correcting it. When they don’t it kind of makes a joke out of their courtroom.
This reminds me so much of having to write 100 sentences in the 3rd grade.😂 I hated it. Was usually something like, “I will not talk in class.” Times 100.

I was a juror on a murder trial about ten years ago. One of the other jurors said several times to me that he was so angry at being picked that he was going to try and screw the trial up. Apparently, he said this to another juror, too . I reported him to the jury foreman in private and he was removed. Not sure what happened to him, but it was pretty outrageous that he thought he could screw up the trial simply because he didn't want to be there, not to mention creating a potential mistrial with no justice for the victim's family. To this day, I'm not sure why he was even chosen as a juror because he was clearly irritated at having to be there.

Yes, Jury duty is the one time the government "asks" anything of us. Every other time they simply take it without asking so it's understandable people aren't so helpful.
This is great. Some people think a fine is no big deal so they do whatever they want. Sometimes you have to be creative in order for someone to actually get it.

That's really cool, that the Judge made you pay your fine to a charity of your choice. I think that's a very classy move, and I bet you weren't late again, probably to avoid "getting sideways" with the judge!
Yeah it was a no win situation to be honest because he probably would've been reprimanded if he had to interrupt the sentencing Judge to make a phone call to the other one. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to get out of one courthouse, walk to the next courthouse, go through security, and find the courtroom you are supposed to go to next so his original case was probably wrapped up in time it just took time to get to the next courthouse. Not waiting ten minutes to start the case then locking the attorney out of the courtroom isn't very cool.

Justice? The fuck is this about justice? Why would anyone treat a prosecutor with respect, most of them are worse than cartel leaders.
Best of luck to you, and keep in mind that there will be days when it feels like it's hopeless. That's pretty much guaranteed to happen, and it's just part of the job. When those days come, take a deep breath, pour yourself a stiff drink, and say out loud, "This too shall pass."

No she was right. The assumption was that she livestreamed the proceedings (or so was reported to the judge) She had to correct that by saying she didn't do that (the livestream) but she accepted she recorded.

Judge Glanville is a former US Army attorney and he does not put up with BS from anyone in his court room. I live in Atlanta and this is not the first time he has “gotten someone told” as we say down here! 😂

I worked for an attorney’s office for quite a few years and one of the first things they told me when I was hired was to be very careful how I spoke to judges’ offices. I was a legal assistant so I dealt with secretaries for judges all the time; some of them (the secretaries) thought they were hot sh*t because they knew we couldn’t really give them a hard time when they didn’t do things they were supposed to do. I had a really difficult one in Miami- I think I did lose my cool with her once. But, yeah, you don’t piss off judges. They have the power to make your life miserable.

I live in CA and I used to have really flexible work hours, so I would go watch trials and hearings at the OC Courthouse. You see some crazy ass stuff, and it’s free. I usually paid $6 for parking and brought my own lunch to eat in the cafeteria, so a cheap day. I met all kinds of cool people, reporters, detectives, guys like Bruce. Got stared down by a serial killer, too. Andrew Uridales.

You know, from the title I thought the video was going to be one of those recordings where a judge comes down too hard and stops being professional. Instead, I actually really like this judge's rulings. It's clear he's not being as punitive as he could be, but at the same time it's court, it's serious, and as the official responsible he's going to enforce basic rules and civility. Didn't think I'd watch the whole video but I did and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I like this judge. Like the first lawyer said "just let me pay the fine". You learn nothing if you are used to just paying a fine when you act out of pocket.

This reminds me of a time that I was told to go to a lesson in road safety after the Police caught me speeding. By coincidence a student of mine was in the same class. We were all told that everything that went on in the class was confidential. But the moment the student recognised me, she pulled out her phone and started texting her friends!
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here : did all the people taking he class sign a NDA/confidentiality agreement? Or was that agreement between the student (individual) and the school? Second option, the students do not have the responsibility of confidentiality towards each other. I have never done such a class. So i would be interested to hear more about it :)
You were not giving a good example, my friend. My sense of humour is telling me that probably you have given your students tens of speeches saying that they need to behave a certain way or else, so if you are not following your own admonitions... Probably, I wouldn't dare to do it right there and then--I would wait until I got to the loo or on my way home, but there is no way in hell I would have kept something like that confidential. No way. The first second I can, the whole school would know, and I would make sure that the whole school knows. I am curious about you doing something about it. Did you call anybody's attention to it? From a former teacher: with great power comes great responsibility.

@@Tymbus Yeah, I agree. But something that life has taught me once and again is that sometimes life can come back and bite you in your ass. It has bitten me more than once. I am a former teacher, and I thought that it was funny.
@@jt5426 It is a "class" run by the civil courts. It takes a day. Attending stops you having points on your liscence which would raise the cost of car insurance. I recall we all verbally agree that anything that is said will remain confidential. The class helps you learn or relearn aspects of The highway Code in the uk. I've taken three in my 35 years of driving. As a lecturer, I find learning interesting.

For a bit over half of those filing, no federal income taxes are paid. States with income tax vary but all are graduated which means roughly the same numbers apply.
Those who pay taxes get generally value for them. Roads, customs and consumer safety, public safety, social services etc etc etc. Ever go to a national or state park? Ride mass transit? Drive to work? I nearly guarantee you paid far less than you cost to do those things.
We are not obligated to serve in our armed forces, run for office ir serve on school boards, clean litter in public spaces, mow the grass in the parks we use and so on.
Jury duty is the one exception.
@@JodyOwen-we6oo I feel like I pay taxes all year and at tax time just for someone that's sitting on their ass to collect it. Yes I do enjoy parks but I also pay to park, stay, and eat in the area which is even more money they ask of me. The roads look like Swiss cheese. I'm constantly dodging potholes. I don't ride the city bus, collect EBT or unemployment, or ask anything from the government other than to leave me TF alone. When you pay a lot of taxes you have a different perspective than someone who collects a lot of taxes.

I’ve been in front of judge for some very petty, minor stuff and hated the whole bending over like they’re kings…but I swallowed my pride like an adult, smiled and said your honor to all responses. Some people really let their egos take control.
That stuff used to bother me too until I took on a very high profile public sector job directly expressing the public's will and saw how it looks from the other side. When a judge refers to themselves in third person as "the court" and responds harshly to minor breaches of decorum, that's not self-aggrandizement on their part. That's them taking seriously their solemn duty to carry out the will of the people as codified in law to uphold a fair process. Nobody else in that room has that duty, so if they don't do it, then it doesn't get done. There are certainly plenty of power-tripping judges, but if you're a decent person and you're in charge of serving the public interest, you've got thousands of people on your mind all the time and the only way to serve them all is to stick to the program.
How was she even able to have her phone! When I sat on a jury (for a civil case at that) there was no phone service in the courtroom and we couldn’t even take our phone into court it had to remain in the jury room and turned off!
This judge seems very thoughtful and upstanding in the way he's dealing with adults who are supposed to know better, do better and project better behavior.
I just found your channel and am enjoying your comments. Chief Judge Glanville is a retired Army Brigadier General and he seems to bring “rules are to be followed” to his courtroom just as is required in the Army. This was very interesting. Thank you.

You're right. We see it in the schools too.
It's terrible. This is why we need more judges like him that maintain order in their courtrooms & hold ppl accountable. He & others like him, should be giving lectures in a law schools. Courtroom etiquette unfortunately is no longer common sense, even after the judge issues their instructions & responsibilities for some ppl.
