Today we take a look at whatever happened to the 90s band Third Eye Blind following the huge success of their self titled debut album that spawned three huge singles including "Semi Charmed Life", "Jumper" and "How's It Going to Be" in addition to frontman Stephan Jenkins

what's going on my fellow rock-and-rollers. Now success lawsuits infighting and feuds as well as backstabbing those are the words that I would use to describe Third Eye Blind career , so whatever happened to the bandwell you're gonna find out in today's video. Now I love the fact that I grew upin the 90s I can't imagine being a kid
growing up in today's world political
    correctness has infected everything and
they just don't make music or movies
like they used to and the late 90s were
a weird time in rock music. Grunge and
alternative rock was on his way out it and it
was replaced by this weird mishmash of
post grunge groups like Bush, Better than
Ezra, Days of the New and more poppy
commercial rock like Goo Goo Dolls Third
Eye Blind and Sugar Ray and then you had
new metal. Now when I think of the more
memorable parts of my childhood I think
of some of the great teenage comedies
including can't hardly wait and American
Pie and the common bond between these
two movies was the rock band Third Eye
Blind who had music featured in both
films. Now Third Eye Blind was huge in
the late nineties and had some big
singles, but whatever happened to those
guys. Nw to say that Third Eye Blind had
overnight success would not be true.
    Bandleader and singer Stephan Jenkins
fine-tuned his craft in the Bay Area
during the early to mid 90s before the
band found huge success in 1997 with their
self-titled debut album and the band
would be formed four years prior by the
songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins and
Kevin Cadogan in San Francisco and
    Jenkins influences were pretty eclectic
    including parliament-funkadelic
to Joy Division to Cat Stevens and
during his time in college Jenkins would
    be diagnosed with chronic fatigue
syndrome, which took away a lot of his
youthful energy for several years but
once he recovered from that condition
Jenkins turned his attention back to
music. But with no label he along with
Cadogan would record a demo of songs
with other local musicians but the
problem was that the demo didn't really
fit in with what was popular on rock
radio at the time, but it would be luck
that truly helped the band out a close
friend of the band became their manager
and they met engineers David Gleason and
Erick Dodd who agreed to work with the
    group on their songs.
And at one point Gleeson even helped the
band sneak into George Lucas's Skywalker
Ranch way they recorded some songs It
would be Third Eye Blind demos of how's
it going to be and slow motion that
caught the attention of recording labels
including Dave Massey of Epic Records
who would meet with the band and by the
    end of that meeting
Stephen Jenkins had secured an opening
slot for Oasis who were playing San
Francisco that same week Jenkins would
reflect on that meeting saying I think he
liked my directness he wasn't threatened
by it the same way some people were. Now
the opening slot for Oasis was a dream
    come true
Third Eye Blind had become used to
playing for dozens of people, but they
were now plaintiff thousands of people
opening for one of the world's biggest
rock bands. And following the opening
slot for Oasis, a bidding war ensued from
record labels and the band would end up
signing with Elektra Records and it
would prove to be one of the biggest
deals for any unsigned bands at that
point in time now. From the moment Third
Eye Blind hit they were inescapable. the
band's debut album would produce three
    huge singles with Semi-Charmed Life
Jumper and How's it Going To Be in
addition to two other well-known songs
    from the band's catalogue including
Graduate and Losing a whole year Now
those songs would be played to death on
radio and television even to this day
and the band at the end of the day would
sell six million copies of their debut
album just in the US alone and they also
got a highly coveted guest spot on
Saturday Night Live. Now what separated
Third Eye Blind from their peers was
that they were singing about some pretty
dark stuff. It would probably help that
from end Stephan Jenkins was obsessed
with Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground
and their debut album was filled with
lyrics about drug addiction, abuse and
suicide as exemplified in the song Semi
Charmed Life and Jumper but these tracks
were packaged with catchy hooks and
up-tempo feel and poppy choruses and the
lyrical matter did little to dissuade
radio stations from not playing their
    tunes now 1999

I'm nearly 63 & remember when Semi Charmed Life was on high rotation on the radio at work. The song was chock full of greatness but when Stephan Jenkin's sings that last word in the line, "I'm not listening when you say goodbye" & he goes into that gravelly falsetto ... man I never tire of hearing that along with the rest of this brilliant debut album. Not one dud track out of 14! Kevin's guitar playing is other worldly and I gotta stop as there aren't enough superlatives to describe how this album affects me still.

Their song “Slow Motion” was deemed too disturbing after Columbine happened, and it was stripped of the lyrics almost completely on “Blue”. Eventually they released the full version and it’s a great song. I never understood why rap can be filled with lyrics about murder, but a rock band can’t include a line about a kid shooting another kid.

Every generation feels that way about the one after them. If you have a kid who grows up its even more apparent. I can remember when I was my daughters age like it were yesterday in the late 90's. Yet I will never truly be able to relate to her and her generation.

I was lucky enough to be a little kid in the 70’s, subconsciously soaking up all that classic rock, punk, disco, and soul! But I feel even luckier to have been a teenager in the 80’s, punk turning into early new wave, music and pop culture was so magical then, almost as cool as being in my late early 20’s for the alternative music revolution of the 90’s, which in my mind, totally rivals the late 60’s summer of love. But nothing was as cool as being in my mid thirties for Nu-Metal, know what I’m sayin’? Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy! (Or my early 40’s for the dub-steps)

I'm Canadian...and in the late 90's and early 2000's, they seemed to be the openers whenever a big name act would come to my local area. They were also on just about every single Canadian festival too..so that is how I saw them so much. Another band that I experienced the same thing with was, 'I Mother Earth'. I probably saw them close to 10 times in a 3 or 4 year period too. Again, I'm not really a fan, as I'm more of a metal guy. But both had some good songs. I guess I would consider it cool that I saw IME with both singers..before Edwin tried to launch his eventual unsuccessful solo career. thanks for jogging my memory, Hogan's Stache.

Several years ago Kevin, Arion, and Tony were touring together as XEB, playing all their old 3EB songs, and they stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh. I bought a VIP ticket because part of the deal was they let you play a song with them during sound check, and I got to play Thanks A Lot with the band using Kevin's guitar. I literally got to play the song that inspired me to play guitar, with the band members who wrote the song, using Kevin's guitar and equipment. Easily the top music moment of my life.

Losing a whole year, Narcolepsy, The Background, Semi Charmed Life, Jumper all just scream that time period. Thanks Kevin for writing the music! Interesting fact - Kevin uses a lot of odd alternate tunings like F# A C# F# G# E and DADEAE and variations of - but, that's why their sound was so different. He carried this into the second album Blue, on tracks like Darkness and Wounded ( the latter being the last song he ever wrote for 3eb, but also his favorite) Although not a major fan of Jenkins, his lyrics are brilliant.

Out of us three I couldn't stand them and we would have to fight 2 against 1 for me to try not to break our on CD/radio player... I had to suffer listening to that album but my younger brother did try to get me to like them as they did have dark themes to their songs but I just couldn't get into it... Then came their second album... Still didn't like them but the blue album was better than the first.....
Fast forward 11 years later and me and my younger brother met Stephen Jenkins in front of his tour bus... I did most of the talking while my younger brother was saying the wrong cringe things unintentionally of course when he did speak and Stephen seemed like he was getting a little pissed at the things that were coming out of my brothers mouth.. I told him the blue album was better than the first and my brother says he liked the first one better and Stephen tells my brother "I like this guy (me) you should listen to him"... My brother started saying to himself under his breath as he looks right at me in shock like "what the fuck... He don't even like your band"... Hahahahaha

Since then, I have have come to a conclusion that he is a egotistical douche - and your experience adds to it. And the treatment of Kevin Cadogan demonstrates it further. It seems to be all about him and takes all the money like a ''it's my band, I get paid the most'' attitude. He seems a very ''me, me, me'' person..... I do love their music though.

They're still around, writing amazing albums and touring every year. I've seen them at least once a year for the last 10 years or more.
