What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is pigment disorder in which the pigment producing skin cells (melanocytes) are destroyed resulting in a white patch. It can occur in any body part.
What are the Symptoms of Vitiligo?
People having vitiligo usually notice white patches on their skin. These patches are more commonly found on areas where body is exposed to the sun, including hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. These patches are usually symptom less. However, mild itching or redness in sun exposure are very common symptoms.

Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns:
Focal pattern - depigmentation limited to one or only a few areas
Segmental pattern - depigmented patches that develop on one side of the body
Generalized pattern - the most common pattern. Depigmentation occurs symmetrically on both sides of the body.
Who are more prone to vitiligo?
Although the course of vitiligo is unpredictable but some triggering factors are:
Chronic sun exposure or Family history
Diabetes mellitus or Thyroid diseases
Frequent contact with chemicals (phenol) or application of some strong bleaching agents
Weak immune system or Genetics and hereditary
Stress, Physical or chemical trauma
Vitiligo Treatment at skin n laser centre in Delhi
Patient must understand that the nature and the course of this disease is unpredictable. A balanced nutritious diet with lots of vitamins and minerals are vital. Avoid stress, physical & chemical damage and other common triggers. Without proper treatment from a dermatologist, it can spread very rapidly and can be extensive, having a negative impact on psycho social aspect of life.

Photo-therapy - Activates the pigment producing cells (melanocytes) and helps to bring the colour back.
Vitiligo surgery - This is usually done in a case of stable vitiligo i.e. if the area of white patch has not increased in size or number since past 3 months. This is very effective for the patches on lips, hands, neck or eyes which are difficult to treat with medical therapy.
Light Therapy - Light therapy consists of exposing the skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV radiation is known to suppress the immune system and reduce inflammatory responses. This is usually given in the extreme cases, which do not heal with oral medication.
Nonsegmental vitiligo (also known as bilateral vitiligo, vitiligo vulgaris, and generalized vitiligo) This is the most common type of vitiligo and results in white patches appearing on both sides of the body. Usually it starts near the hands, around the eyes or mouth, on the feet, or in an area of the body where the skin rubs together frequently.
Segmental vitiligo (also known as unilateral vitiligo) This type of vitiligo usually starts when a person is young. It generally progresses for a year or so before it stops. Segmental vitiligo appears in one area (or segment, hence the name) of the body, such as on one arm or one leg. In about 50 percent of cases, it’s accompanied by color changes in the hair, eyebrows, or eyelashes.
Localized The vitiligo appears in just one or a couple of spots on the body.
Generalized The patches of color loss appear in many areas of the body.
Universal Most of the original skin color is gone.
Vitiligo Is the Result of
Melanocytes malfunctioning which are the cells found in the skin that produce melanin and are responsible for giving the skin its color. When these cells die, the skin loses its color - which by definition is vitiligo. Researchers still don’t know for sure what causes these cells to die.
It’s suspected that problems with the nervous system lead to segmental vitiligo, while other types are thought be the result of an autoimmune disease that results in the body destroying its melanocyte cells. Vitiligo specialist in Delhi Dr Sandesh Gupta says In these latter cases (the more common type), progression of disease can be easily controlled .
For other autoimmune diseases, the mechanisms that cause those conditions to develop are more clearly understood. In the case of vitiligo, there is still no definitive explanation for why the melanocytes die, and therefore many sources stop short of concluding the skin condition is an autoimmune disorder. Still, that is the most widely accepted theory (especially for nonsegmental vitiligo).
Vitiligo is linked to autoimmune diseases in another interesting way: People who have an existing autoimmune disease are at an increased risk of developing vitiligo. The link is especially strong for people with Hashimoto’s disease or alopecia areata.
