  • This video shows how to make a DIY kalimba out of little popsicle sticks. It is one of our first lolly stick craft videos, and this one was brought to you by our artisan called Sadia from Pakistan. We had seen popsicle stick craft before and wanted to add our unique influence on making musical instruments out of popsicle sticks. If you have any ideas about what else we could make, please leave a comment letting us know. This video will show you a step-by-step guide on how Sadia made the wonderful 15 note kalimba.

I thought something was a little off when I saw you using glue, but I saw in the comments that it's only meant to be decorative, not playable.
Most musical instruments rely on vibration to play, so using glue would have probably dampened the vibration too much. I think it would have been better to clamp the pieces in with maybe a stick over all the pieces and perhaps a screw on either side of that stick. I'm not sure.
You'll also have to tune the sticks to the correct key, like you would strings on a guitar. A tuner is relatively inexpensive. In fact, I think you can find some videos on here that play a tune, and you could match it by ear.
A pretty cool project either way though!

It would definitely be possible to make a working kalimba using popsicle sticks but unfortunately I am not trained to do it and wouldn't know where to start. Glad you liked the project, do you think you would be able to make a working Kalimba? It would be cool to see how its done! 😅

I was thinking of making one. After I made the comment above, I got curious and looked around on Amazon. You can buy just the keys and stuff for about 10 bucks. All you'd really need then is a box. So at some point I think I'm gonna try to make a box and attach the stuff to it. Hopefully it'll work.

I just checked out 'Rush E' and you probably could but you might need a few hundred people playing these at the same time 😂

It looks great but it doesn't make a sound like a real kalimba, it is more a decorative item! :)

all that work and for what? Didn't give any demonstration to show the viewer if it actually worked or not. The hot glue is the worst thing to do in a musical instrument build. Hot glue is great at attenuating (deadening) sound vibrations. The keys should have been fitted without glue with a pressure rod pressing down and a tone stick beneath it to act as a bridge for sound transfer.
It's a shit-show build that is not practical at all, and I highly doubt that it can play sounds, let alone play music.

Hey thank you for your in depth feedback on the video, this Kalimba as you said does not produce any sound, it was crafted from popsicle sticks as an experiment and makes a lovely ornament. We do have an actual Kalimba instrument craft video that is scheduled to go live soon 😊

Thank you for your comment. I chose the adhesive used in the tutorial for its accessibility and safety for a broad audience, including beginners and young crafters. However, you're right that cyanoacrylate (super glue) would offer a much stronger bond and excellent durability for the kalimba, especially with heavy use. Thanks again for your insight!
