Background (story-time lol):
Following my last upload on running MSTS on Windows 11, there have been a few comments requesting for help on how to resolve crashing issues while trying to run MSTS on windows 11.
After a bit of re-search, I've come to notice a pattern that most of the crashing issue caused by MSTS is related to the types of Graphics Card.
Seeing that MSTS has no issues running on nvidia GPUs while there were plenty of complains of MSTS crashing on AMD GPUs, I theorized that it could be something related to the DirectX API and the way the older DirectX APIs are handled by the different GPU Manufacturers.
As luck would have it, awhile back ago I was playing around with dgVoodoo to see if it could upscale the rendering resolution for my other older games, and after glancing through the documentation on how it works, I figured that I could use dgVoodoo to standardize/upgrade the API calls from older DirectX games to the more modern DX11/12, which in theory, should somewhat resolve the graphics related crashing issue for MSTS.
And so following this theory, I decided to try out installing the wrapper for MSTS to see if it resolves the low frame rate issue on my Intel + Nvidia Laptop, and to my surprise, it did. After the successful first test of this, I decided to do a trial test run on one of my friend's laptop which happened to have the worse case scenario of a Ryzen CPU with a Radeon discreet GPU.
As expected, Running MSTS without dgVoodoo resulted in an instant crash upon launching, but once I installed dgVoodoo's DX Wrapper, suddenly the game ran just fine. And after seeing how well this works, it felt like a hidden miracle gem of a fix that I felt needed to be PSA-ed to the rest of the TrainSim community as so many players have been facing this frustrating issue for many years, yet the fix was just under our nose the whole time.
As such, I decided to make this video as a complete guide from zero to RTX-ish (PTGI tbh).
(And also, to compensate for the "time-lapse installation" in my other MSTS on windows 11 video. That was not helpful at all for users looking for a proper video solution to installing MSTS on Windows 11.) - Hry
UPDATE: As of 31st of August 2023, UKTrainsim will be turning off it's lights indefinitely, that means that the MSTSBin files which are currently hosted on UKTS's domain will also be going down as well. In preparation for the inevitable, I've added snap-shots of the MSTSBin site as it is now on the 28th Aug 2023 to the internet archive, as well as uploaded an archive version on github pages, and have linked the webpage in the video's description. I've also tested and checked that the file downloading function still works on the Internet Archive version of the site, and have performed hash checks to ensure that the files served via the Internet Archive version is the same as the current live version. If you do receive a security warning on your web-browser indicating that this type of file is not commonly downloaded, rest assured that it is a false positive.

DgVoodoo really does wonders, i somehow managed to get 60 fps with MSTS on a low end Windows 10 Laptop, Edit: that is until i installed too much addons
NOW i know, its because i may have accidentally installed OpenRails Only content into my msts folder instead of in a separate folder
alright so ive organized my OpenRails content in a seperate folder like it should be and now msts is working properly
Note: the wide screen support only works if you have 1.4 installed otherwise the game will crash on the loading screen

Edit: Ok, so this is what worked for me and my windows 10, open dgvoodoo 2, in the general tab, there's output API, set it to directx 12, also, in the directx tab, check the fast memory acces. This worked for me, and I hope that I helped.

I tested the dgVoodoo 2 fix on my friend's AMD Ryzen Laptop which had a Radeon GPU as well and it managed to fixed the crash on startup issue as well.
what do you use to record the gameplay? apparently Shadowplay doesnt wanna recognize the game and not to mention that FRAPS only records as avi...
I use OBS to record the Gameplay
right, because i try to use Shadowplay and even if i manually put the game in the list, it only records a black screen and sound

I do highly recommend using OBS to record instead. While it is a bit more tedious to setup compared to Shadowplay, it is much more powerful and gives you alot more control over which window/application you want to record specifically. And it also uses the same hardware encoder as Shadowplay, so performance hit shouldn't be much noticeable. (Although your mileage may vary depending on your system configuration and hardware processing power)
yeah i did do that anyway. btw even with dgVodoo installed, MSTS was stable but after a week of playing it just turned into a slideshow again. is this normal?
@@CFRTrainSpotter If you haven't rebooted your PC in awhile (especially if you have fast-boot enabled), restarting (not shutting down, and then pressing the power button) your PC would normally resolve the issue.
Do i need a CD-ROM? Everything works fine until i have to do MSTS CD 2. when i try mounting it, it doesn't want to mount to anything
Have you tried unmounting CD 1 first before mounting CD 2?
From where you are getting the iso file?
I have physical copies of the original disc.
I just dump them onto an ISO file

Having some problems here, Train Sim is locked in at exactly 8 FPS no matter what adjustments I make. My system is I5-9400 16 gigs ram, win 11 23H2 version, GTX1660 Ti. I am successfully running Voodoo I think, the watermark is present in the MSTS screen. any ideas? help would be much appreciated. BTW you have posted an outstanding tutorial, thanks for doing so.
Can you try rebooting your system?
Use the restart option in windows, rather than the shutdown option. And check to see if your windows uptime in task manager has been reset
@@NekoCoaster I'll check that, it has been ongoing ever since I installed train sim last week. It seems bizarre to me, it's as if there is a configuration file or registry entry saying that it will be 8 fps no matter what, it is locked on that figure, even at the opening menu before I select an activity. @@robinelston5966 No problem, Glad to hear it fixed your issue~ It's an odd bug either with MSTS or SysWOW64 where the longer your windows session has been running, the more degraded performance you get in MSTS.
From my experience, the frame rate usually starts dropping down to 57 FPS after a day of up time, then 32 after a few days to probably close to what you've described after a week, so do make sure to restart your PC often to resolve this issue.
Alternatively, you can also turn off Fast Startup under:
Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable > uncheck "Turn on fast start-up"
since Fast Startup is just basically Hibernation under the hood when you 'shut down' your PC with it enabled.
That way your windows will start with a fresh session everytime you shutdown and power on your PC again.

Are you trying to launch an activity right after saving your settings in the options menu?
There is a bug in MSTS where opening the options menu, and then launching an activity afterwards causes the game to crash after loading in.

1. Launch MSTS
2. Change your settings and save
3. Exit MSTS
4. Launch MSTS again
5. Load your activity

Heyo, I seem to have a little problem with the framerate ever since I tried downloading a mod. I tried reinstalling MSTS today but the problem still pursues.. what do I do?

Only solution I can suggest is to try different configuration settings within dgVoodoo and see what works

@@HamzahWAbdat Try locating launcher.exe in your MSTS folder, click on that, then click on troubleshooting, then check the following graphical issues that you encountered.

the game opens then instantly closes after install
Try specifying a different display adaptor in dgvoodoo and see if that helps
