    Thanks for the information. I liked your video very much. :) I like the idea that they are naturally small animals.
    We live in Southern California where it reaches up to 114 in the summer. Sounds as though Zebus might be a good bet.
    2 questions:
    1. You didn't say anything about milking them. Are they only raised for meat (and pets)?
    2. We have half an acre. Is that enough land for a zebu or two?

    • @TheChittys
      @TheChittys  Před 2 lety

      Thank you! They do handle the heat well but I would suggest getting animals that are from a similar region. They will tolerate the move better. You can milk zebus, I just haven’t purchased any with the intention of doing so. I think with proper grass management and good pen rotation, 1/2 acre would would out great for a couple Zebu.

    • @indyreno2933
      @indyreno2933 Před 2 lety

      @Lazy C Homestead, the scientific name is actually Bos namadicus indicus, making the zebu the only extant subspecies of Paleotropical Aurochs (Bos namadicus), which is extinct in the wild, the Domestic Cattle (Bos primigenius taurus) is the only extant subspecies of Palearctic Aurochs (Bos primigenius), indicating that the Domestic Cattle (Bos primigenius taurus) and Zebu (Bos namadicus indicus) evolved their domesticated lifestyle independently, a major example of convergent evolution, much similar to the evolution of sloths, with tree sloths being a polyphyletic group as the Two-Toed Sloths (genus Choloepus and family Choloepodidae) are more closely related to extinct ground sloths that are in the family Mylodontidae, while Three-Toed Sloths (genus Bradypus and family Bradypodidae) are more closely related to extinct ground sloths that are in the families Megalonychidae and Megatheriidae.

    Fun fact, look at cattle photos from the early 1900's you'll find they have increased in size since. Man always has to attempt to improve or change what's before him. Sometimes he succeeds sometimes not.

    • @TheChittys
      @TheChittys  Před 2 lety

      Considering miniature zebus are the smallest natural breed and one of the oldest developed breeds of cattle in the world, I don’t think they’ve been overly stylized. I have, in fact, admired pictures of cattle from even just 60 years ago. They were built well and very sturdy.

  • @Dave-fp3uh
    @Dave-fp3uh Před 2 lety +2

    You mentioned you got one of your cows at auction, was that a regular cattle auction? Do you think they would get a few hundred at least since usually people there are interested in buying by weight?

    • @TheChittys
      @TheChittys  Před 2 lety

      It was a regular sale. We were there to look at some belted galloways and didn’t get to purchase any of them but we got a speckled park heifer. Now she was wilder than a rabid coyote, but that’s probably why she was there

    • @TheChittys
      @TheChittys  Před 7 měsíci

      Well here in eastern Oklahoma you can usually keep 2-3 per acre with proper rotation but I don’t know your climate or what type of land you have. You can usually stock 2-3 mini zebus in the same space as one standard cow.
