- RYE is The Prettiest Town In England | A full tour of historic Rye Sussex from historic Mermaid Street and High Street to see all the main tourist attractions here in Rye. Come with me on this walking tour and I'll show you around the most beautiful town in the UK
Rye is a captivating town that transports visitors back in time. Its cobbled streets and ancient buildings evoke a sense of history and charm, drawing those seeking an escape from the modern world.
At the heart of Rye lies Mermaid Street, a picturesque thoroughfare lined with half-timbered houses and quaint shops. As you wander along, you'll feel as though you've stepped into a bygone era. The street's characterful architecture, coupled with the independent boutiques and traditional pubs, creates a unique and inviting atmosphere.
Beyond Mermaid Street, Rye offers a wealth of historical treasures. Ypres Tower, a medieval fortress, stands as a testament to the town's defensive past. Its museum houses fascinating exhibits about Rye's maritime heritage. Nearby, St Mary's Church, with its towering spire, dominates the skyline and offers stunning views across the surrounding countryside.
For literature enthusiasts, Lamb House, the former home of Henry James, is a must-visit. This enchanting house, filled with literary memorabilia, provides a glimpse into the life of this renowned author.
Rye's appeal lies in its ability to blend history with modern-day charm. Visitors can explore the town's ancient walls, delve into its rich past through museums and historical buildings, or simply relax in one of its cosy pubs. The town's independent shops offer a delightful shopping experience, and the friendly locals add to the overall welcoming atmosphere.
A stroll through Rye is a journey back in time, a chance to immerse oneself in the town's captivating history and soak up its unique character.
Rye is an English town near the coast in East Sussex. In the centre, cobbled lanes like Mermaid Street are lined with medieval, half-timbered houses. The redbrick Lamb House was once owned by writer Henry James. Nearby, the tower of the Norman St. Mary’s Church overlooks the town. The 14th-century Ypres Tower, which formed part of Rye’s defences, is now Rye Castle Museum, with paintings and displays on local history.

Rye is stunning, had many a great walk around there, slso The Mermaid inn is just so beautiful and very haunted
Was my first time here - I was mesmorised by the place!
Wasn’t haunting me! 😂 I was dead to the world after my epic drive to get there.
I love Rye. My family on my Dad's side lived there for generations and my late great Aunt was once Mayoress of Rye.
Rye in Sussex is another fantastic town with shops, cafes, pubs,
churches, nice looking buildings, a little bit of everything here and
i really like how the streets look, it has a very nice small town feel
to it and this is another great town to explore and enjoy the very beautiful scenery of, until next time again take care and thank you.
🇬🇧👋🇬🇧
Thanks so much
Have a lovely weekend!

I keep trying but she’s evasive 🤣
Lovely placè,and the old Buildings are amazing, driven through the Town ,
We agree!
Thanks Neil and Rebecca. A lovely film.
Thank you - was fun to visit Rye!
Been once a few years ago so it was lovely to see it again. Thank you.
Thank you 🙏
I just love your videos!!! Sooo good!!!! Julie. NZ.
Thank you so much!
Hello Neil! What a wonderful video, and such a sensitive presentation, just letting us, the viewers, see what you see, without intruding on our experience, of this special place. One my mum loved, so-it always holds a special place in my heart, with happy memories of visits there! Fantastic photographer! Thank you, love suexxx
Thank you so much Sue ❤️❤️
Visited for a day many years ago, to have tea with my late husband’s Uncle and Aunt. All sadly gone now. Pretty town, and you chose a lovely day.
I lived round here for quite some time of my adult life, and it was funny when I watched the last series of Black Mirror, the episode 'Beyond the sea' is supposed to be set in 1969 America, and when the characters go into the town there, I thought, "Hang on a minute! That's the bottom of Mermaid Street!" (16:30 on this video, The Strand, Old Borough Arms and the Mermaid café)- I haven't seen the Crown, and didn't know that.
On holiday in Asia, I saw some Korean pop boy band video where half was the sights of London, the other half of the time was around Rye, and the Old Bell pub garden on The Mint.
Lovely place, great informative video again.
I video called my Father while in Rye who was in a Nursing Home in Australia on Respite for 6 weeks while I was away in England in 2017 so he could see what I was seeing. He used to take us to Rye when we lived at Ashford in Kent on weekends when I was 12 in 1973. I fell in love with Rye & always wanted to stay overnight at the Mermaid Inn which we never did. Hence my epic journey described above. I cried outside the teahouse below the Church because that’s where we visited when I was a child. Rye is a very emotional place for me. Thanks for the revisit. ❤
You’re welcome

🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great to see Rye I went there 56 years ago when j was 10 and certainly then remember it as a picturesque place altho I didn't realise it was so big,but I guess over the years it will have changed like most places. We were staying at Camber Sands which is not far away. Thanks Neil for lovely blog 😊
@@sandrakent8049 It's quite small! Easy to walk around. Sadly most of the independent potteries are gone.
Big fan, love your walks but…but…the most beautiful part of Rye was missed! Church Square, West Street(Lamb House), Watchbell Street, and down to Ypres Tower. Beautiful cobbled traffic free streets up there. Well, you loved it, I’m sure you’ll visit again. Thanks for sharing.
Will definitely get it next time ❤️❤️
Another great & fantastic video o Rye. When i use to go to Bexhill i use to go to Rye there is a market on Thursday's!.😍
I bet that was fantastic
Thank you so much for another wonderful video! Am planning on visiting England next year and have added some places to my list to visit because of your videos!
That’s the best feedback
Thank you!
You're lucky you didn't go on market day. It can be very busy. Rye is expensive and touristy but very pretty. Happy memories of walking down to Rye Harbour, past the golf ⛳ to Camber Sands.
I really felt as if I was there. Thanks.
Great stuff thank you so much ❤️
Lovely place. I love the Mermaid Inn 😊❤❤❤
It really is!
What a beautiful place Rye is another one on the list. Great video thanks for sharing.
Thank you - amazing place. I was mesmorised by it
I love Rye. I love your films too, they are so relaxing. A lot of video makers add hideous, obtrusive soundtracks. Apart from the odd little bit of guitar music, which I like, you keep the natural sounds of the places you film. Seagulls, sound of tyres on wet roads, that fizzing sound the sea makes on the stones on the beach. So calming, thank you for making them. Do go and see Woodbridge in Suffolk if you haven't already.
Thanks so much
Just added Woodbridge to my filming plans that’s a great suggestion thank you!
I always check the Deben tide times when I visit woodbridge, it's even more beautiful when the tide is in
Absolutely fantastic l have never been there so thanks it's now on my visit list 😂😂😂,
Great isn't it!
Rye is lovely!
Amazing place
😎Very good and nice to see the back of Land gate
I drove all day in 2017 from Tavistock in Devon to Rye ALONG THE COAST where I had booked for the night at the famous Mermaid Inn. It was an insane drive of in excess of 300 miles & I was violently ill along the way beside a farmers hay shed. I also toured Fishbourne Roman Palce at Chichester enroute. It was an epic journey & one not to be repeated. Madness!
Wow!! That sounds like one of those unforgettable moments of someone’s life 🤣
Hopefully the Mermaid Inn was worth it?
@@GimbalWalkTVThere was no haunting! Too damned tired. Lol But it’s magnificently historic & the bed was very comfy.
Roy Orbison said he went there, but he drove all night.
Mapp & Lucia still loom large here as both Channel 4 and BBC series were filmed here.
Anybody recall THE FLUSHING INN RESTAURANT, great place.
Neil that was a wonderful walk but you missed Ypres Tower which is close to St Marys Church with lovely tea rooms and b and bs close by. Its the focal point of Rye
Did you know there are more listed buildings in Hastings Old Town just along the coast than in all of Rye? Rye is still a cracking place though. But without the massive selection of fish and chip shops Hastings has!!!
Fun fact, the area on The Strand at 16:10 featured in Season 6 Episode 3 of Black Mirror.
Needs a McDonalds and a Wetherspoons pub, by the looks of it!😊
🤣🤣🤣
They're in Hastings, which is close enough.
Paul McCartney has a home in peasmarsh, as a massive beatles fan I took a smeaky pic, security man was outside 😂another place want to revisit
Can you see the house from the road?
@@GimbalWalkTV not really but it has huge gates and walls, security car on drive outside, it's an oast house
Modern cars, re-modernised buildings and infrastructure together with the overall feel of the village. I only viewed the video for around 20 seconds and immediately, it felt way to advanced unlike the original state that it should be in. Everything about it feels like any other village in the UK. It does not have that ambience associated with it. Now, I say "original state" and everyone would say that the village has to move with the times and get refurbished otherwise the buildings will crumble. Yes, correct. That is true. However, I must stress that the old days were much mire serene unlike the new days we witness now.
Maybe not as pretty a town as Dartmouth, but still very nice.
Lovely and no feral families 👍
I don’t know what that means
I just make videos on nice happy places
Oh there are, quite regularly
Good video, but you forgot to mention the seven seas.
What’s that
@@GimbalWalkTV Ever heard of the group Queen? (you can do the rest)
These old houese have got to have some paranormal activity going on!
Definitely
A spirited response.
The Mint... where coins were made
No, it was where the holes for polos were invented.
You missed out the best bit of Rye!! You didn’t go up to the church square and show how lovely the church is especially the west window. Very odd!
I'll get it next time don't worry
Wouldn’t say it’s the prettiest town in England, not by a mile, it’s got a couple of stunning streets like the cobbled hill leading up to the church.. but that’s it really, the council have closed the public toilets, there are normally rough sleepers down by the train station car park… and it is way way over priced on everything.. we go there most weekends because of the nature reserve… parking is normally impossible…. Yeh it’s a nice place, but the best in England NO!
Annalise Oval
Modernisation has destroyed this picturesque village.
In what way?
Rye is the muddiest and most ugly Harbour in Europe....
I dont' think I saw it - is it far from the town?
