I carried a Glock for many years as a duty gun, shot great but never fit me, I could just not make them work for me. I shot a few 1911's, a Browning Hi Power, but the gun that fits me perfectly, works for me is my Smith & Wesson Model 39 9mm. I have never shot a pistol I can just use and shoot everytime and get the accuracy I get out of it.

Hi visibility, steel sights and you're done. A Glock pistol is a great tool right out of the box, and doesn't really need any mechanical modification. I carry a G17 for work, and it has made me a believer, this is coming from a guy that has always been a user of Sig & HK. The grip angle was my only initial complaint, but after a couple of hundred rounds that issue was cured.

My glocks have aftermarket sights, and longer takedown levers. That being said, fitting the gun to the shooter, by whatever mods, makes perfect sense. Nothing beats training, but training with a gun you enjoy is just a little nicer.

Dave, I have read your articles for years and enjoy your knowledgeable perspective on all things. I bought my first and till this day my only G-17 Grade A Law Enforcement trade in 1996. I used it in IDPA SSP Bone stock plastic sights and all. Through the last 21 yrs. I installed Trijicon HD XR sights, extended slide release, extended mag release and a butt plug. It points naturally for me. I'm going to build a Ghost Gun G-19 this spring. Thanks for the video Brother.

+BadCow The semantics are important here; It didn't seem to me that DS was saying that a Glock NEEDED anything beyond a sight replacement. More that, for many people, some of these other tweaks may optimize it.
I think I'm in agreement with your general sentiment, though. Most folks would be way better off spending the $$$ they drop customizing something on a good class or two, or even a few cases of ammo and range time. You can't just purchase good results.
I like new sights and a OEM minus connector, NY1 spring, removal of the finger grooves. I just can't with the frakking finger grooves! But that is me. I can shoot a stock Glock just fine, but this is how I prefer mine to be.

To be fair, the M&P has its share of things that need improvement, but they're the same as the Glock, minus the grip work. An Apex trigger group assembly and Meprolight or Trijicon sights will address those issues, while also giving it increased sight visibility in low-light situations.

Another cogent, reasonable video offering insight from experience. I too like the Glock. It is, currently, my only 'pistol' (have had other brands, but..) Mine (one of) has over 100K rounds down range and, with proper maintenance, she just keeps on keeping on. I use Ghost parts for the trigger, excellent. I have not changed the grips. I use (on each of my Glocks) different sights (Mepro, Trij, etc)... thanks again for the excellent discussion.

  • @insertname290

I like your point of views and believe you are correct on everything honestly. I've held alot of guns and g19/23 with medium back straps with or without the beavertail is about perfect fit and I have smaller hands for a man. points awesome, we'll known reliability and more accessories then the most tactical-impractical man on the planet could possibly use on 1 gun lol the people who don't like them still can't say they are unreliable. alot of other gun companies even try to recreate glocks...s&w for instance...no reason to not have one unless like you say, it just don't fit. in that case there's plenty of guns that are glock influenced, reliable with better triggers, grip, ergonomics etc out of the box. all depends on the user's preference. same goes for caliber. the size, speed, recoil and capacity all play a huge roll in what's right for your purpose also. just my thoughts after watching the video. just subscribed and plan on watching some more of your videos.

For ME, it's the Browning Hi-Power 9 mm. It's Battle proven, good weight to manage the recoil for good shots and the magazines are readily available from 10 shot to 20 and I believe they even make a 30 round mag. (Not sure on the 30rnd) the Guns can be had in surplus form and are very very reliable firearms. easy to maintain, and like I said earlier they have been used all over the world by many countries from Police forces & Military use. They are the great grandaddy of hi capacity double stack magazine guns and always my choice for a reliable battle gun. Also 9mm will be like cash in a SHTF type Scenario, not only do you need one but each family member should have a handgun as well and YOU should teach them to be proficient with these guns, Each gun should be in the 9mm cal in my opinion so that you won't be hauling around several different cal ammunition for them. Face it, when the time comes you'll be glad you prepared yourself and your family members with the same caliber handguns. 22 LR guns are great for hunting small game and would be needed as well and the ammo for those are going to be one that could be traded for other things needed in a barter situation for things that you need ( Supplies)...... (This is my opinion only, but seems to be the best way to look at a SHTF Scenario should one occur)

I like a lot of the writings of Cooper. The thing that I disagree with is the almost complete lack of experience that Cooper had. He might claim to have an engagement in Central America, but the event is written as a Matt Helm novel, where any more info could not be discussed. This pains me to say, but there is a Walter Mitty-esque flavor to his exploits. This Weaver Stance that he decided was the best is not seriously taught anywhere anymore. I think he was a genius at self promotion, and understood there was a void in an emerging pistol cult in America. If we (yes, I am using the Royal "We") remember, a large part of his professional career was that of a public school teacher. Not a basher, just remember, a trauma surgeon cannot tell the difference between a 230gr FMJ and a 115gr FMJ, when it hits elastic skin. Cheers

  • @WilliamRNicholsonLST-1195

I was all set to hear of an expert here speaking of his best recommendation for a perfect combat pistol. I had expected his 1st statement to sound like " out of the box , I think this weapon is the best weapon available now straight ; out of the box , with no add-ons or major changes needed ! " Instead a rather lengthy video is presented telling of the authors recommendations for multiple changes to his favorite Glock. I once had the view that I could consider a Glock for purchase if someone said in a convincing manner why a certain model Glock is his best as coming straight out of the box from the factory. After watching this video about the dozen or so changes this author would make to his favorite Glock , I have decided to drop Glock from the list of possible buys. I'll just be stuck with ol' HK ; please feel sorry for me .................

A lot of people without military experience especially in the logistics aspect like PLL will not understand why the military use certain combat firearms. Of course they are a lot of better firearms than a Glock 19 but it is not just dropping 5 rounds or 3 rounds in a dime size shotgroup. Conditions of operations is important. Can you have a great firearm handle the environment, the logistic nightmares and average soldiers? CZ, Sig Sauer, Berettas, Colt and other companies have their firearms in military service but logistic, cost, and other factors might hurt or benefit the use of the firearm.

I've heard over and over and over again that anything you have to upgrade is crap and also that you shouldn't change too many things on a glock... Neither of those are facts. Is a $500 glock supposed to be as excellent as a 1911? Some think so. I'm not 1 of those people and frankly they're stuck on themselves for thinking that way. A glock is a blank canvas waiting to be painted... Most of us can't get the exact car or truck that we want/desire... Same thing here! I pretty sure my $1100 glock 17 can compete well with a $2000 1911 any day... And I have yet to even put my trij night sights on that I've had for a year because I shoot so well now with the factory sights. My glock has a fulcrum trigger, 3.5 connector, defensive springs, extended slide lock and release stainless pins and extractor, tungsten guide rod, butt plug, and "I" stippled and reduced the grip (gen 3) and I will get a match grade barrel as well as a skeletonized striker... Maybe a titanium plunger safety...

If you have to do all this to make the gun "comfortable and more shootable" ......Ill look elsewhere. Gun 550, Trigger job 150, Sights and install 175, Stipple job/finger grove removal/beaver tail/mag rip assist/increase undercut 175, Slide serrations 250, enhanced mag release 50, enhanced slide stop 25. Glock is a good gun. I like the G19, but there are other guns that do the same thing with many of these add ons. CZ p10c, VP9, PPQ and P320 give you much of this at a 400 OTD starting point with decent sights.

People are going to hate this comment but a Browning BDM is a much nicer system, and it's a shame they never took off. I have both, and I find the BDM to be a more refined, and better alternative if you want this mode of fire. I am a 1911 guy so, that perhaps is leaning my judgement.

Your Glock has a rounded nose on the slide. Some Glocks have that. It doesn't make sense to me why the G19 does not. I have three Glocks. A rounded nose on the slide is not only functionally desirable for reholstering, it also helps in the aesthetics. (Glocks are ugly to me). So, is it possible to get a custom slide that like that without spending a fortune?

the comments and this video illustrate the huge lack of understanding of what makes a good trigger. pretravel or takeup has nothing to do with it. the only thing that effects the front sight when the trigger breaks is overtravel and the weight and distance of the break. for example, a 5 pound trigger with a rolling break and no overtravel will allow the sights to stay steady. a 3.5 pound trigger with overtravel and a stacking weight (the pull gets heavier as the trigger moves closer to breaking) with a sudden break will always move the front sight as the trigger breaks.

I have the evo elite connector and have used it and it is a very smooth trigger but I feel that I might be dangerous with this connector. Now it's not that bad but I have been practising with this connector and have found that when I draw I will sometimes release a round before I'm on the target. Because I believe it is so smooth and I don't know when it is going to break. With my Glock connector it has the wall and I have never let a shot go to soon. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this?

Nowadays there is a 'wide range of semi auto pistols' and it sounds like you found a great choice that fits you without any modifications. Dave is explaining what works for him. He is not trying to get you to switch to Glock, however if you do make that choice he is shilling a bit for Templar Arms.

    3- Glock

    • @MrJopanti
      @MrJopanti Před 7 lety +1

Since it is an opinion the ranking is right. Sig Sauer is one of the best combat firearms in my opinion but as we can see the Navy Seals are replacing the Sig Sauer P226 for the Glock 19 3rd Gen. One of the factors are the logistic and the PLL requirements. I used 1911 and Berettas while in the military and in my opinion the Glock 19 was easier to handle. Berettas are bulky but I did not see an issue with them. BTW I have a medium size hand. So sir in my opinion you have a great ranking here.

@7:45"the people that really don't know anything, but recycle information they heard from someplace else... science tells us that a bumblebee can't fly!" -Facepalm. Dave science definitely does not say the bumble bee cannot fly. People who find science inconvenient may tell you that's what science says, but you should not repeat it. It makes you sound foolish and I don't think you're a foolish person. Thanks for the video.

Scientist have stated in many a debate the contradiction of the Bumblebee flight. Centuries ago they argued that the mechanics did not add up. Who originaly said it is unknown but Scientist ( and I have sat in the room and heard them say it) have stated that -"...by all aviation mechanics, it is seemingly impossible for Bumblebees to fly" So uh FACE PALM to you sir. Ron Harsha is a scientist and I sat in in class and heard him say it myself.

James West I can understand your confusion. Initially, I disagreed with Dave's comments, as quoted. You are referencing the fact that, at any time in history, there are phenomena at work in nature that the current state of science is unable to fully explain. I agree. Nothing I've previously said challenges that fact. Furthermore, none of what you wrote supports the assertion made by Dave, ''science tells us that a bumblebee can't fly''. Neither does a comment made by a science teacher in your presence constitute ''science says...'' The practice of science requires true scientists to test their ideas against observations. If natural observation does not support prediction, the prediction is abandoned or modified to fit natural observations. Obviously, any scientist that believes ''bumblebees cannot fly'', despite the fact that bumblebees are regularly observed to fly, is not using the practice of science to come to their conclusion. I could have previously elaborated: Science does not say the bumblebee cannot fly; people who deny bumblebee flight are not using science to form their conclusion, whether they consider themselves a scientist or otherwise. Happy New Year, James. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for the reply.

So self-centered that you are not able to accept the firearm as the engineers designed it? If you feel that the firearm isn't built to your acceptable requirements then you bought the wrong firearm. When you modify the system as it was designed and built, you destroy the integrity of the product. Can you imagine what would happen if, for example, every individual soldier who was issued a weapon began customizing it to his own specific preferences? I wouldn't risk leading a platoon of individually modified firearms into ground combat. You wouldn't take a NASCAR 'stock car' to the street, would you? If you are willing to risk your life, and the lives of others, on the street with a firearm that you think you have 'made better' than the engineers, designers, and precision machinists at the factory, go for it.....but not on my watch. In the words of MASH's Colonel Sherman Potter......"HORSE HOCKEY". So, think about what your defense would be, in court, after your new and improved personally modified firearm led you to an unanticipated consequence.
