All the punishment are not just symbolic,they are based on Garuda Puranam which depicts the type of punishment for all sort of sins in hell. You should google about it

Vikrams portryal of Ambi Remo and Anniyan is mythological. It was the first Tamil Language movie that showed in my country and I saw it on the big screen after that I had to find all Vikraam's movies. What a movie

Fun Fact - M Night Shyamalan had once said that he got the inspiration for the character "Beast" in the movie "Split" from the character of "Anniyan"
Night Shyamalan didn't direct beast properly such a clumsy movie if had been Shankar think beast would been won many awards
