Snapper SPX 42" VS Simplicity Regent 42": What's The Same & What's Different Between Them?

  • The Snapper and Simplicity brands of lawn equipment have been around for decades, and both have their fair share of loyal users. What some people may not realize is that both of these brands were purchased by Briggs & Stratton a while back and since then the products from these two brands have been VERY similar. In this video we look at the similarities and the differences between the 42" cut Simplicity Regent lawn tractor and the 42" cut Snapper SPX lawn tractor. Both of these tractors have fabricated 42" mower decks, LED head lights, 23 HP Briggs V-Twin, and a Tuff Torq K46 transmission. There are plenty of other similarities between these two models, but there are a few differences between them that could cause you to definitely prefer one over the other.

I have a 4Year old Regent 25/48. It has shocks to give you a smother ride (which is important to us older folks).
Previously I had a Snapper and it too was a great mower (but had a rougher ride).

I just bought a 9yr old Snapper with 46 inch deck from a friend due to engine oil leak. My friend bought a new Simplicity. I fixed the oil leak by replacing the oil pan gasket. $600 at the dealer. I did it myself for $40 and 10hrs. Seems like these Briggs and Strations V twins 23hp engines have this issue. A couple of good you tube videos helped me. Love the seat, quietness, cornering radius, 4 gal gas tank, push button pto, and electric height adjustment. It also cuts grass smoothly

Your comparison of the two machines was available at the right time as I was deciding about what tractor to purchase. My brother is a "die-hard" Simplicity owner who won't buy any other. Given the fact both tractors are Briggs & Stratton built, I felt it was a "win win" decision. After viewing your video, I made numerous calls to Snapper dealers only to learn the SPX was not stocked nor were they optimistic they would see any. Eventually I located one 56 miles away so I snapped it up. Had I not, I would have ended up "beholden" to my brother . . . so in the end it was a "win win".

Good luck finding a simplicity mower right now. My local long time simplicity dealer had not received any this year and only a few last year. I found the broadmoor version I wanted with a optional rear suspension, bad neck and back a hour ride from my house and grabbed it while the grabbing was good.
FYI pleanty of husquevarna mowers out there which may have been my second choice if all else failed.

The Snapper costs less money to own over the life of the mower. The rollers on the back of the Simplicity deck are on the ground the entire time you mow with it. The gage wheels on the Snapper deck are only on the ground when there is a hump or hill that they need to ride on to prevent the deck from dragging on the ground. Those 4 gage wheels will last longer than the rollers and cost MUCH less to replace than the rollers.

Thanks for the video and giving the details of both machines. I agree with you about the seat on the Snapper, it looks better than the Simplicity seat and will probably hold up better also.

Yeah that is the same style seat that John Deere used to use back in the early 2000's. The custions would alway s come off of the plastic frame. The manufactrer must've chaged the adhessive they use becaus ethey do hold up a bit better these day, but the style used on the Snapper is going to hold up much better.

The Simplicity’s floating deck is a huge part of the even cut you get not just the strip it provides in your grass. It really does provide a better cut, but is more complicated and probably more maintenance. It’s all about the float. Important to some and not to others. I bought a John Deere S120 because I have a small yard, unaware that they put a total crap trans called TL2000 in them unlike these mowers with the K46. Looking to replace the JD before it dies at 200 hrs. They said I shouldn’t even be pulling a leaf sweeper in the fall with that machine. Not capable, lol.

I wish your video would have been around 3 years ago, I purchased a Simplicity Regent with the 42 inch fab deck and have had nothing but trouble with that roller (Free Floating) deck. 1. Those rollers will collect dirt on them even if the soil is slightly moist causing them to stop rolling, now you are dragging them behind the mower pulling out your grass. 2. The cables that hold the deck in the rear are nearly impossible to connect the pin on the left side with everything in the way. 3. I purchased a bagger kit for the mower and the baffles close the opening on the front of the deck, however the slightest dip on your lawn will cause the baffles to make contact with the ground and push them directly into the moving blades, destroying both baffles (Happened to me) the stamped deck the baffles fit under the deck rather the hang down in the front (that opening on the fab deck is there for a reason, poor engineering). 4. The deck stop brackets will get hung up on the frame rails if you mow on an uneven surface (small graded slope). 5. The motors consume a lot of fuel. 6. Briggs customer support is a joke. My prior mower was a 1986 Wheel Horse 212-5 (Bagger) never had a problem with it in the 30+ years of ownership, it just finally wore out. They don't make them like that anymore.

Thank you for your feedback! We've seen a lot of the issues you mentioned and since Briggs declared bankruptcy the quality has gone even further downhill.

I agree, the new regent is junk. I ended up taking the deck stop brackets off because they were always hanging up on the frame.

@@EshlemaniaTV WORKED @ the Snapper plant in McDonough Ga. before B&S purchased Snapper & Simplicity & they ran it in the ground, THEN shut the doors, the Quality began going downhill as soon as Snapper & Simplicity was purchased, I personally wouldn't buy ANYTHING with those names on it UNLESS it was built 20+ years ago, sad to see GREEDY UPPER MANAGEMENT want to RULE the end market by buying up end products to put their engines on, I saw so MUCH WASTE ! Man I want a lawnmower so bad and there is one in my neighborhood and it’s a nice simplicity and he only wants $500 for it but I can’t afford it neither my parents. Our snowblower is leaking oil everywhere and I want to get a lawnmower and I have a plow already to put on it but times are so hard now and I wish I could help them out.

    • @EshlemaniaTV
      @EshlemaniaTV  Před 2 lety

As far as a tractor, John Deere and Husqvarna have pretty easy to remove decks. The one on the Snapper is pretty easy to remove, but being a fabricated deck, it is a bit heavy.

@@EshlemaniaTV Checked it out a bit, John Deere is more complicated than the Snapper and Husqvarna is even worse with a cable for the deck engagement.

  • @michaelharrison8224

The cut quality is not even close. The Simplicity will kill the snapper every time. Simplicity has had the roller bar forever. It's not very hard to remove if needed. A frame mounted deck will never out mow a free flouting deck. The snapper deck is the same deck system you'll find on most cheap box store mowers. Big price difference between these 2. About $1500.
