    Pokémon has had its fair share of controversy on the Switch, but how did this really happen? How did the fan base become so divided and the Pokémon Company so criticized? In today's video essay I tell the story of Pokémon on the Nintendo Switch so far, and give my own analysis along the way. Everything in this video is my own opinion, and if your opinion is different that's perfectly fine.
    I've actually been planning on making a video essay on modern Pokémon ever since the release of Pokémon HOME, but it just kinda went on the video essay backlog. The recent direct covering Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends was the point for me where I said "alright, I need to get my thoughts out there on this now".
    Something crazy is for most of Pokémon on the Switch I've been kinda indifferent about things, I understood people's criticisms but didn't really have any myself and just kinda went with the flow. It's mostly around the midpoint of our story here than I began considering the consequences of what was happening to this IP.

    Usually this is where I'd write some extra thoughts of mine or insight into why I created the video or whatnot, but this time I honestly don't know what to say. This isn't an easy topic for me to talk about, considering Pokémon is one of my big three childhood franchises (other two being RCT and Sly), and it's definitely helped shape a fascination in video games in me that's had me pursue game design today. It's hard for me to look at the current state of the series and really just express what I feel needs to be said, like during the whole Sword/Shield fiasco I never really brought up any issues myself at the time and just went with the flow, even semi defending some bad design decisions. But at the end of the day, it's a multi-billion dollar company, they don't care about x random person defending them on the interwebs. What they do care about is if fans are aware of the issues that can otherwise be gotten away with, and if a great number of fans express that things aren't up to their expectations. And so I figure for that reason it's more important to spread criticism and problem awareness than defense, but that's my hot take on that matter at least.
    As I say in the video though, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Like if you're hyped for the remakes, then great, I hope you get lots of fun out of them. You have no obligation to follow my opinion, but I do thank you for taking the time to hear it out.
    And please, let's be civil. I know this is a controversial topic, but please don't say anything to anybody in the comments section you wouldn't say to somebody face to face. Behind every username is a real person with their own experiences, aspirations, personalities, sensitivities... Somebody having a different opinion on a series of children's video games is never enough reason to personally attack them. (Literally hundreds of commenters anyway: "This can't stop me because I can't read!")
    Anyway, as always I'll use the pinned comment for any updated information or things I got wrong (and despite including this here I'm STILL "corrected" by several people in comments on a daily basis ALWAYS for these exact two points, so uh, there's that)
    -Turns out Pokemon HOME doesn't immediately pull the trigger on your Pokemon if you stop paying, it just keeps them permanently locked away until you can afford to pay their bail. Even if it's not immediately deleted this is still glorified ransomware, your data is still being kept from you unless you pay up. Almost any other cloud service you'll be able to download your data before your plan runs out, but sure not for Pokemon HOME if it's any Pokemon not allowed in Sword/Shield, literally the only way to have any control over any of these specific mons put in there is to pay. I have also heard some reports that if you don't pay for long enough they may be deleted after an undisclosed amount of time as well.

    Greetings from December 2021. Since CZcams recently hid the dislike count on all videos on the platform, I'm sure a lot of people might be wondering what the Like ratio is on this video anyway?
    92.3%... 92.3% is the Like ratio as of December 4, 2021. Ever since the dislike count became hidden though, let's just see I've seen a dramatic increase in those with a "greater than thou" mentality in the comments.

      You literally want them to bring that magic back so that others can feel what you feel, so they made the Sinnoh remakes. They’re keeping it as original as the originals were, by only upgrading them to 3D, as far as we know, so that the younger generation can experience what we did 15 years ago, yet you complain about the BDSP? It doesn’t make sense to me, your logic.

    • @AcousticHarmonia
      @AcousticHarmonia  Před 3 lety +177

      It doesn't make sense because you took my argument out of context.
      The magic I felt was the will to create something new the world hadn't experienced before. Even in remakes in the past it would be so different to the originals that it felt like experiencing the world of the originals with the gameplay of a completely new game.
      I don't want people to experience the exact same game scaled up (they could just go play the originals), I want people to feel the passion that goes into creating something new and unique instead of the lazy way out.

    • @Random__Guy
      @Random__Guy Před 3 lety +10

      Yeah I agree with your second comment I'm in the boat that the remakes were the lesser of two evils or at least for the community I would have loved to see completely remastered versions of the games but then people would complain that they lost the originals charm at worst we just got the games that I enjoyed when I got into the series at best we get it with possibly new features there is evidence for it but it's too early to call though everything you said on bank I wholeheartedly agree with that service is trash at least it doesn't delete your pokémon though

      @Random__Guy Před 3 lety +3

      @@SqueezySponge it's fine for me people to disappointed with these remix considering that so far they haven't done what other remakes have I think what he was talking about and the latter part of the video was that the community pushing so hard for the remix to be made led to gamefreak just rushing it out which I could definitely see as they gave it to another company which isn't necessarily a bad thing but kind of shows that they wanted to work on Legends more than gen 4 remakes

      @@AcousticHarmonia I like the emotions you put into this video, it really shows how deeply you care about this series, and I know you are someone truly authentic (don't become a monotone robot lol).
      I don't normally comment on videos, but I see the passion that went into this video, so let me share some of my thoughts. I used to love Pokémon; it was a large part of my childhood and teen years. I must have put in thousands of hours into the games alone. I stopped playing up to diamond and pearl (on the ds). I basically caught them all (besides one or two event based only pokemon), I remember having to do the whole safari thing in diamond to transfer my entire collection from fire red and emerald. It was stupidly tedious, but I did it to (hopefully) future proof my pokemon, as I assumed that transferring pokemon from the newer generations from then on would be a piece of cake since the technology was no longer the limiting factor, I just never thought I’d had to take into account Nintendo’s greed…
      There was a large gap where I just stopped playing pokemon games. I heard the story of black and white was great, so I did go back to play them a few years back (the story was indeed great). I also bought a fresh 3ds just to play pokemon sun, but it became abundantly clear that there was little to no point going through the humongous effort to transfer all my old pokémon into the newer generations. All I ended up doing with these newer pokemon games was beat the story, and that’s it.
      As a kid, playing a 3D pokémon game was practically my dream. Pokemon Sun fulfilled that for me, though I felt disappointed that I couldn’t easily bring my old pokemon that I worked so hard to train (ev trained and everything). I know it’s not impossible to do it, but seeing how Nintendo is behaving, I have zero incentive to do so, and I officially consider myself retired from playing pokémon. I treasured my hard earned 5 star black trainer card on my pokemon diamond, so to commemorate it, I dumped my original cartridge into a rom (so it’s digitally preserved forever), and now I carry it with me wherever I go on my phone (using the drastic emulator). I don’t really play it, but it’s so incredibly nostalgic for me to look back at all my pokémon once in a blue moon, it’s a trip down memory lane for me.
      And that’s really it tbh, I have not played any of the newer pokémon titles past pokémon sun, and don’t really have any incentive to do so, because as you say, pokemon has lost its magic.
      There is so much potential for Nintendo to do something great with this series (especially with all the tech available today), but unfortunately their greed is too great. I actually stopped purchasing anything from Nintendo a while back, beyond just the pokemon series, I am disgusted with their business practises, and refuse to support them in any way. I don’t have much time to play games these days anyway (unfortunately), but if I want to check out Nintendo titles, I will gladly and proudly pirate them, because I no longer believe this company deserves anymore of my hard earned money. I think a major part of the issue is the pokemon fandom constantly rewarding them for their bad efforts. We vote with our wallets after all; if sword and shield was such a disappointment, why buy it?

    Sad news is there is no "well it's just your opinion" anymore. The employees have outlined in their complaints about the company exactly what we have been saying for years. and worse like not getting the proper funds and required materials to gain better skills because the higher ups are fine so long as they are getting the easy money of the current games. Their lack of care and skill is hurting everyone beneath them. (well except the creative teams who are mostly fine. it's the technical side that is suffering.) Yes time crunch is a problem but also one that they themselves set and the top brass are ok with. So while it's okay to have sympathy for those at the bottom who are just as tired of their shit as we are, it's also important to keep criticizing GF and TPCI as well as not buying the games anymore. Something people tried to tell the fandom as a whole ages ago. it might already be too late but verifying the truth from them directly was enough for me to want to try again.

Pokemon got me thru so much honestly, as stupid as that might sound to some. It's truly heartbreaking to see the direction of the franchise that embodied a ton of my favorite childhood memories. With the way things are now in the gaming world I can't see things really improving. All good things come to an end. What once struck a match and blazed into a glorious fire eventually dies out. Everything has a shelf life. Even pokemon I guess. All I can honestly say is at least we can still play the old games. And still feel the serene nostalgia and relive the magic we found as kids. The thing about the remakes is that they are, for some players, their first experience with the region. I first played Blue version well into gen 3's run, and entirely skipped out on gen 2, so when I played Heart Gold I wasn't just playing another gen 4 game, or another johto game, but I was having an adventure in an entirely new region hot off the heels of the sinnoh games, and honestly, it was probably the best introduction to the johto region I could have asked for, and the ability to go from an entirely new (to me) region to the one I had only seen in 8-bit and rematch the kanto gym leaders was a... really unique sensation, one that I don't think was directly planned (I had played neither the gen 2 games, nor the kanto remakes), and one that I don't think I'll ever get from the series again.
    Also, I like just how seamlessly the gen 3 and 4 additions felt in HGSS. Abilities are always nice, but I love how the regional dex was expanded to include the evolutions that had been added in the meantime, and let's be honest, feraligatr and sneasel feel like they were released a couple gens too early given their typings and stat spreads, so it's nice that they have actual physical STABs (and sneasel got an evolution to boot). It just felt like "gold and silver if they were made with an extra two generations of hindsight", which is arguably what any remake should strive to be.

      Regardless of if you use the additional content or not, we shouldn't be fine with getting less content than before, for the same or more money than before. We used to have 800+ pokemon per game. We used to have good side activities like contests and post game battle areas, we used to still have acess to older gimmicks like Z-Moves and Mega evolutions. We used to have all of that stuff and more. And now they cut corners whereever they can, so they can sell SOME of it back as DLC or just not bring it back at all. That's not ok. I never really did contests but I know they were popular so just cutting stuff other people like and not even replacing it with something else or better but just, cutting it and shrugging it off is not smart.

      @@jumpyman9754 Linear in terms of story progression. While Platinum is technically the first game to be streamlined since it removed Diamond and Pearl's option to challenge gyms 3-5 in any order, Black and White is notable for locking half of the region into the post-game. Eastern Unova was post-game only for no real reason, and it's not like the Battle Zone from Sinnoh where it was seperate from the main region and made sense that way; it's just blocked off arbitrarily from the rest of the region it's connected to. There are definitely still great side areas like Lostlorn Forest, but the linearity was really noticeable due to the structure of the region. As for the Battle Frontier replacement, the PWT in Black 2 and White 2 you could argue was a good replacement, but Black and White had no really good replacement for the Frontier. The Battle Subway was nowhere near as good as a Frontier with multiple facilities and the Institute was essentially a mock battle simulator. Not to discredit you; these are just my observations.

      I love how Legends is the first time the Pokedex as presented in the games makes sense. The anime version makes sense, it's a pre-made encyclopedia. In the games we are apparently the one responsible for the entries, but it doesn't make sense why simply catching something fills out so much oddly specific info in the dex. It clearly wasn't available before catching, so you must be responsible for getting info.
      In Legends we are completing various research tasks and catching different species en masse, under the assumption our box pokemon get studied. It's still abstracted to a degree but it actually makes sense in universe how the dex is completed by our actions.
      Such a minor detail but something that's always kinda bugged me about the games and one I never thought would be addressed at all. Game is far from perfect but going to lengths like that are why I feel like Gamefreak actually cared about Legends feeling immersive in the new style. They didn't need to drastically evolve the series like that despite people asking for decades now, but they did it and took an ambitious risk after so long, with some small touches that really made it feel like a fresh start made with passion behind it.

    The Pokémon Company has seemed like it hated the fanbase loooong before BDSP. Nintendo in general has zero respect for their audience and I can’t really blame them for it. They’ve become well aware that their fans will literally buy any first-party title regardless of quality, completeness, price, etc. and then violently defend it as a masterpiece.
    They’ve not only never been punished for their anti-consumer practices, they’re usually handsomely rewarded with every new game seemingly breaking some kind of new sales record. For a tentpole release like Sword and Shield, they wouldn’t risk charging $200+ dollars for the Complete Pokémon Experience™️ if they didn’t think they could get away with it. They got paid an additional $70 dollars per copy just to turn Breath of the Wild into a finished game six years after release and people have been calling it the Game of the Year since we even knew what the real title was.
    People always demonize the business practices of EA, Ubisoft, Activision, etc. and that’s all 100% valid and has been discussed to death, but Nintendo is the one people should really be complaining about yet it’s almost always absent from those conversations. They get a free pass on things that any other company would be crucified for. Imagine if the Steam Deck or the PS5 released with hardware that was 10 years behind the modern standard. They would have been dead on arrival, yet Nintendo just announced today that it has no plans to drop the price of their six year old console with 10+ year old specs. And I saw people in the comments defending it…

    In my experience fan's generally aren't asking for "release a new Pokémon now". If anything I tend to see people saying they should EXTEND their development time to get a good completed game out instead. Usually they just want confirmation that something is coming at all. Even with Legends coming up for example. Most people I see talking about it are hopeful and think it has potential, but are worried that it's only got one more year of development considering how the trailer was. As in: they would feel safer if it had more time before release to polish out issues.
    The "release a new game every year" is entirely The Pokémon Company's own decision because they tie the entirety of new merchandising waves to the Pokémon game's release. A new anime, new toys, new clothes, etc are all set to come out with the release of a "new pokemon game" as the spearhead.
    But that means if the release day is coming around and the game is blatantly unfinished, they just basically stitch up the loose ends, cut what they can't, and release whatever they had at the time. Because they *can't* delay it. They're not allowed to because that would involve delaying _everything._ Originally they would then just implement whatever they couldn't finish into the "third version" and/or Remake of that gen. But they do DLC now and, presumably due to pride, seem to refuse to update the base game with said DLC. (walking Pokémon implemented in DLC areas but not the base Wild Area for example.)
    Worse, historically "a new game every year" business models for series don't turn out very well quality-wise and lead to fan backlash and a general reputation for mediocrity. A lot of the complaints leveled at Pokémon now seem incredibly similar to those I've heard leveled at games like Madden or CoD in years past. "Soulless, greedy, full price graphics upgrades of the same game over and over" and such.

The times they have are usually for characters that have established names, and even then for every hit (Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus), there’s also a miss (Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid: Other M). The only reason Breath of the Wild was able to have the best of both worlds was because they just defaulted Link to being called Link, and because they wrote his character having a mental disorder in order to avoid having him talk - something I highly doubt they want to impose on a ten-year-old.

      A lot of people grow to dislike series they used to love, especially when there is no nostalgia to carry it anymore. So many people play Persona, SMT, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Octopath Traveller, or other turn-based JRPG's and it just retroactively kills Pokemon in comparison. And the people who never picked up other JRPG's are now also playing games that have advanced over the decades with good writing, more involved combat/mechanics, a unique set of mechanics or impressive level of immersion, more strategic gameplay in general, all games having more impressive graphics, etc. Those are the people sh*tting on Pokemon, the people who came back to a childhood i.p. and just realize they got a pitiful failure of an experience.
      And then the people still hopeful or buying the games after that realization are just dullards tbh.

    Guys, there are, like, 900+ Pokémon. Catching them all is not only an unrealistic goal, but you won’t even play with them all. The only reason to complete the National dex is to attain the shiny gem/pendant, but at that point, you’ve caught every Pokémon in existence. I think it’d be more fun if you granted the shiny gem to players that complete the original dex and then granting a modified National dex of 400 more Pokémon to collect. That means that the everyone can hunt for shiny Pokémon and still get lots of the Pokémon they love. But honestly, who cares about the National dex? The beauty of Pokémon is that you get to enter into a whole new world and catch a fresh batch of Pokémon. The ND yes adds Pokémon you love but overshadows the new Pokémon. I had a friend play Shield saying he would only catch Pokémon from Gen 1 or 2, and because the game has a surplus of them, he never played or caught any of Shield’s brand new Pokémon.
    TL,DL you National dex people need to get over yourselves. I don’t wanna fill a National dex in one game and then fill it all over again in another. It’s repetitive and honestly taking the “gotta catch them all” montra a little too far

    Discovering your channel and your video essay format and I must say I'm really impressed, even accounting for the fact that longer formats are more common nowadays, your work and reflection on the matter are astounding.
    What's kind of ironic with my relation to the switch era, even moreso with Gen 9, is that not only do I feel fine for not buying any of the games, there would outright be no reason even if I wanted to. The fact behind the matter is I am completely blind, typing this very comment thanks to a screen reading software named NVDA, and as a kid I learnt how to appreciate how complete Pokémon's sound design was, not only for Game Boy standard but for RPGs in general back then. As a result there were quite a few things I could do to the point of nearly completing a game, apart from select dungeons or gym puzzles.
    The last game I completed was Omega Ruby and that was almost exclusively on my own. Then, grid-based movement was essentially abandoned, PLA and Gen 9 were essentially 3D open worlds and so it seemed clear that playing these games in a productive way would be much harder.
    The sound design basis of the series was so good that it was almost exclusively the only series I played that wasn't a fighting game, in that sense I would have sort of a legitimate reason to be impatient for new releases, but I'm really not. I was only a bit sad that I couldn't experience PLA, but easily delt with it in the end.
    Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching other videos of yours, especially your essay on Gen 9. Also thanks for anyone taking the time for reading such a long comment.

These games seem to become classics in the hearts of many people. Pure and uncorrupted classics that keep enduring in the collective consciousness of gamers because of the creativity and ingenuity of these past gaming companies. They left their mark and ended up leaving things on a high note. Not the case for Game Freak, as we have seen. Now I love Crystal because what you have today is so below standard it's obvious with a few exception sometimes. The yearly releases is definitely a problem with Pokemon since it means Game Freak can't put 100% of their workforce onto the new gen because they have DLC, Remakes or Spinoffs to work with ontop of other games that they develop. They made Giga Wreaker and Little Town Hero along side Sword and Sheild and that surely reduced the man power on Sword and Sheild.

    • @starlightgalaxy8286
      @starlightgalaxy8286 Před 3 lety +7

      They claimed to have some sort of burnout from having to make new Pokemon games constantly. But.....I think focusing on Pokemon is still much better than dividing your workforce to make what ends up as 2 mediocre games (Sw/Sh and Little Town Hero). I don't think Giga Wrecker and LTH even sold that much. Heck, LTH just disappeared from most people's mind after like, a month since release lol. Definitely wasn't worth it to make, should have just taken a more normal short break, then continue focusing on Pokemon.
      Although, TPC is the bigger culprit to blame in here, they were the ones who set the stupid yearly schedule. GF should have stood up to them and say "we can't do this, we'll quit making Pokemon and be content with making games we want to make, if you insist on yearly schedule". GF crews are the ones actually making the games that spearheaded all the merchandise, logically they should be the one with the most power here. If they refuse to make themselves available, the rest of TPC would have no games at all, instead of simply having to wait a bit more for new games. That means TPC would need to find new company to do it, which would be more time, effort, and money spent than if they simply agree to relax the schedule. Not to mention the new company they choose might refuse if they have to make a new game in just 1 year. When they contract a new company like with New Pokemon Snap being from Bamco, I don't think the contracting and the game making is done in just 1 year time. It must have been planned and discussed for at least 2 years. So in the end it would be the same waiting time as if they just let GF work on the games for 1 more year. I think TPC has no real option here besides agreeing to GF, if GF actually stands up to TPC.
      Problem is, GF higher ups seems to be too lazy to stand up to TPC.

In the end, I think it's more profitable if TPC just stays with GF and give them a little bit more time, even just 1 more year would be good.
      Although yes, you're right that GF likely still wants the money from Pokemon because that's what most of their money comes from, which is why they don't want to stand up. It's a risk, one that I think GF can win depending on how they presented it, but it's obvious the higher ups definitely don't want to take the chance.

    My entire life I have loved Pokemon just as much as the next guy. Sure, there were some times where I didn't like what was happening, but in retrospect, I was just nostalgia blind. I was born in 2008, so naturally, the Pokemon games I would grow up with would be Black and White. The only problem was that I am the younger brother, so when we got the games, I didn't get them. I didn't have a DS for a few years after that, but I loved the cards, I loved the original anime, and I loved watching my brother play Pokemon White. As I grew I got my own DS, but didn't get any mainline Pokemon games. That was until 2015, where I got Omega Ruby. It was my first Pokemon game, and for some reason, I didn't like Sun and Moon when it came out? I don't know why, I was probably just being a dumb kid and sticking to opinions like how the older games were better. Pokemon has always been in a special place in my heart, it has always been one of my favorite games, but this was all boosted in 2019, when my local library had the Pokemon Adventures manga. I read them and loved them so much. It is the reason I like pokemon the way I do today, it showed new light on Pokemon, it wasn't just catch monsters and make them fight for badges, it was a world with wonderful creatures and stories waiting to be told. So once Sword and Shield was revealed, I was so excited. I thought that I could finaly make a team full of pokemon I found throughout my journey. I thought that it would be me in the adventure. But you can guess the disappointment I felt once I played that game. And then after a while of occasionaly playing Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Legends Arceus was revealed. This could be what I wanted from Sword and Shield. I didn't think it would be everything I wanted, but I knew it was a step in the right direction. It came out, and I played it a bit, but it wasn't what I wanted it to be. There just wasn't enough to do in the world. A little while later Scarlet and Violet were revealed and by the looks of the teaser, it may be just what I have wanted. I know that I should know by now, I shouldn't be thinking like a naive 11 year old, but in Pokemon, you're supposed to feel like an 11 year old, someone just old enough to finally get a taste of the wonderful world, seeing what's really out there. Throughout my life I have loved pokemon and still do. And I will continue to look forward optimistically towards the franchise's future. And thank you for reading about my life with Pokemon, idk why you would.

      I haven't played since Gen 4. My GF who is just getting into them bought Brilliant Diamond. I was watching her for 10 mins until she went into a battle, I noticed something, next to her moves there was a little bit of writing under each of her moves... I was actually horrified to see it tells you which moves are effective, super, 4X (I think) and also not very or doesn't effect. I actually got angry and was pacing up and down our living room while going on a huge rant about how I had to find Lugia or Ho-oh with no help, how for years I used to think i could OKO Quagsire with thunderbolt because I kept forgetting he was ground type. God they make games so painting by numbers these days, not just Pokemon, the industry at large is all about mass appeal. Makes me sad. In terms of Pokemon Home I thought it a brilliant new addition. Yes there is a subscription but your pokemon aren't deleted, you just can't access them again until you re-subscribe. Albeit this point wasn't communicated well, I believe I had to contact them directly to get an answer. But the benefits of moving all your pokemon from all the games you play only one platform is huge. Completeing the pokedex as a casual player is now a somewhat achievable goal (especially if future games will no longer feature all the pokemon to date).

      When you realize that each Pokemon's individual data is basically just kilobytes as most of the work comes from the games they go into (i.e. how the battles are programmed, graphics, interactions with side activities, updates to mechanics) it shows it shouldn't even be a subscription service and you buying the games to get those Pokemon is should be why it generates income IMO.
      I'm not sure how it's too different from Bank, where at least you are guaranteed to have games where you can actually PLAY with them.
