The thing about nightmares being clams originally comes from chinese folklore. Shen is a type of shapeshifting aquatic dragon or a large mollusk which is able to produce mirages. The first character in japanese word for mirage 蜃気楼 actually means shen
idk if its related but, that’s why in naruto shippuden when they reanimated the 2nd mizukage if i remember correctly he also summons clams which also uses genjutsu or mirages

The japanese are really serious about their wordplays. Like for example, most of the curses/apparition/entity origin in Monogatari have double meanings in their name and appearance.
I love how this show drops the hardest moments under peoples noses, that scene with the book is everything to me in writting , the ramifications of ones desires surpass their darkest fears and the book aswering that call and openning his eye to Marcille as if was saying "We see you".
12:10 this is a slight misinterpretation Marcille's mother says that she runs at a different pace than everyone around her. I think most people get that her mother means she'll out live the people she loves but there's a slight nuance that's lost that really only makes sense later in the series.
12:53 This is one part that the anime really takes advantage of the manga. In the manga the portraits are all different but in the anime they got to add in a bunch of new foreshadowing and tidbits about Marcille's character that the manga hadn't plotted out yet. If you look closely you'll be able to see a big detail about Marcille that won't get brought up until next season.

15:37 In side material Ryoko Kui goes over how one researcher recorded the dreams nightmares gave him and how it started out pleasant but it steadily got worse and worse. The conclusion was that it was far easier to come up with awful terrifying scenarios than it was to create pleasant and happy dreams.

i love marcilles expression when shes remembering her dream, she looks so innocent. i know laois is disappointed that he didnt look like a cool wolf but im glad he helped her have a nice dream.
There's actually some pretty interesting foreshadowing regarding Marcille's nightmares, as in episode 2 she has a mini one about her mother. It makes me sad thinking about how she's probably been having a lot during the time they've been traveling considering the little nightmare clams grow in the pillow D:

Love this show and these reactions are fun. Marcille misses her "bestie" amd we get a lot of insight into her fear and motivations for learning about dungeons. She also just sees Laios like a fluffy dog, they have such sibling energy.
And we finally get Izutsumi! Definitely takes some warming up to, but interested to see what you think of her by the end of the season.

Marcille fears the monster [time] who took those she loved. Her human father, bird...because she loved them but with her long lifespan, it felt like they were gone [died] too soon. She will outlive most people she loves. The fear of losing everyone she loved and dying alone..... 🥲😢
I would edit your post to remove the specifics about her father. We know he has died at this point but, so has Chilchuck's father.

Also, I'm not a manga reader, I just really like the anime and rewatched certain scenes if there was too much going on.

As I understand it, the hat shape is common in Japanese stage plays. Her whole outfit is that of a stagehand that you are supposed to ignore. It isn't suppose to give of hints of cat ears.
