is that a fucking one hour fifty two minute and twenty two second video essay on FUNKY UNCLE
Yes sir it is.
and i watched it all in 3 days@@Plexi.T
@@MrMastrmonstrthank you so much. I hope you enjoyed it 🙂
When I hear his music in a game it’s always was Fire 🔥 and a purchase
Oh my god finding out that the creator of the music for jet set radio (which i just discovered recently and have been listening to nonstop) actually did the music for my favourite sonic game as a kid (bc it was the only one i actually owned) is mind blowing
Yeah, I'm honestly surprised he didn't work on many other sonic games as well. The blue blur fits his style perfectly.
BotanicSage and Nib Rock made amazing mashups of both of them, I recommend them a lot, their vibes work amazingly well together
@@Plexi.T IKR
@@Plexi.Thideki, yuji naka and the modelers responsable for the sharp angular low poly models gave sonic rush such a unique ientity while feeling still so sonic
I may be wrong but apparently Nintendo wanted Hideki Naganuma to make music for Splatoon at one point in development. Makes me wonder what that game would sound like if he went through with it.
That would honestly be AMAZING. Mixing the edgy style of Splatoon with his iconic music would be a treat for the senses to behold.
No, the fans wanted him to make music for Splatoon, especially because the shop music was inspired by Humming the Bassline and Hideki posted on Twitter once, that he actually tried to work for Nintendo after he left Sega, but they said they sadly don't have a place for him and it didn't happen
@@Plexi.This sound wouldve worked so well
@@7Mel0dy7that's Nintendo's L.
Finally, someone who did a documentary styled video on the funky uncle himself.
This is certainly one of the most funky fresh video essays I’ve ever seen
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much 😊
So I did want to add something at 44:18 he didn't necessarily get the sample from that speech directly. He got it from a sample CD named "Skip To My Loops" by Norman Cook (Aka Fatboy Slim).
In fact a ton of samples used in the JSR games and Sonic Rush were from numerous sample CDs. He mentioned in a twitter post that people at Sega as well as his friends in the industry would give him sample cds they'd find and he would use them in his music.
A few notable examples of his perusing of sample cds:
-The famous Tony Hancock "Would you stop playing with that radio of yours? I'm trying to get to sleep!" is from the Zero-G Datafile 2
-"He's a sweet soul brother..." is from Top Secret Beats 3 by Trey Maxx
-"I felt like a bulldozer, trying to catch a butterfly" from Fly Like a Butterfly is from The X-Static Goldmine: Disc 2|
-The dealer calling out craps in Funky Dealer is from Premiere Edition 14 by The Hollywood Edge
-The iconic intro guitar from Concept of Love is from Methods of Mayhem by Sony
There's a post on tumblr that lists all the samples used in JSR, JSRF and Ollie King. It goes into a lot of details and I recommend looking into it if you wanna see just how creative he gets.
crevice-spike.tumblr.com/post/91083207619/hideki-naganuma-what-a-man-once-one-of-segas
This video though is 10/10 mainly because your way of describing the music is absolutely perfect! The Funky Uncle will live forever!
I thank you VERY MUCH for the thoughtful and insightful comment. I actually visited a website where all of the samples hideki naganuma uses in his music are listed. I find it interesting how many connections Hideki made in the industry in order to have access to such resources. Thanks for the comment.
Holy moly, 2 hour long naganuma analysis
yep, I hope you enjoy.
A naganalysis
2 hours is not enough to cover the greatness of this man.
Hideki is just a musical god among humans
I really hope that his silence on social media only means that SEGA hired him to compose new music or remixes for the new Jet Set Radio just announces a few months back. We Really love u Funky Uncle
Me too.
Imagine if he was hired to compose a track for the Sonic 2 movie.
Oh my god bomber barbera is so underrated its crazy. That intro instantly hooks me in and its perfect for that fight (aka it gives me anxiety the way the boss keeps hitting me and im scrambling to stay alive with my one ring)
I know man. I have it as my ring tone because of how hard it hits.
I thought this would be more of a theory video, but it was still very enjoyable. I've been getting into sampling lately for music production, and I'll definitely have to study Naganuma more going forward.
JET SET RADIOOOOOO
Ayyyyyy, I almost thought it was the man himself for a second. 😅

Sonic Rush was my first game I ever owned. Hideki Naganuma really made the most unique Sonic soundtrack to date.
Absolutely true man. Working on the Sonic rush portion of this video was the most fun I have to say.
Thank you for this video, now I understand

THE CONCEPT OF LOVE!
And Da People as well hopefully 🙏
Can't wait for Jet Set Radio 3!!!
Ah yes, 2 hours of hideki naganuma! just what i needed to brighten up my sunday!
This is a truly wonderful documentary and analysis of a tour de force of a composer, sampler, musician, and artist.
What a Funkle Uncle
I thank you greatly for the kind words
Thank you for highlighting “Funky Radio” from JSR. It’s always been my favorite track from that game. I made a remix of it back in the day (back then, I wasn’t the musician I am today) and Mr. Naganuma retweeted it 🥲
Naganuma is honestly just too goated man. He's just so down to earth and hilarious at the same time.
Understand understand, the concept of the music of Hideki Naganuma!
Genuinely such a good video man! Hideki Naganuma’s work is so good and hearing someone else talk about it with such love and appreciation is so nice
I had no idea he did the music in air gear omg.
I hate that this video apparently got taken down, but it’s great! Awesome job! 👍
thank you so much. I'm glad you like it 😊
I knew sweet soul brother felt like an ending...
Coulda called this understand the concept of hideki naganuma
As a gaming industry professional and music columnist I have to say that this is a fantastic video essay/CZcams doc. Excellent work throughout - consider me subbed!
You don't know how much this video means to me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed 😢
Outstanding documentary
Almost 2 hour essay about hideki? Say no more.
Naganuma put your bomb rush cyberfunk tracks in spotify pretty please.
It's insane that it's not already on there, let's be real.
Great work on this!
Thanks very much
I love his music so much. He truly is an inspiration to someone like me, a music producer in my own right. I still play JSR on my Dreamcast.
I'm glad to hear that you still respect this legendary artist. His amazing music and legacy will surely not be forgotten by people like you.
Wonderful Video
Just wonderful.
Full length documentary of the CEO of Funky Fresh Beats, arguably the best video game composer. Let’s go.
I just realized that pizza towers western level uses the same sample as the jetsetradio song that plays when your running from the cops.
If you wanna hear music that sounds just like Hideki Nagamuna, check out Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers. The projects they made from 1995 - 2000 would serve as a huge influence to Naganuma and you can really hear it.
Yes his music is very visionary.
Damn, too bad the Rokkaku Corp. got to the old video
Yeah, it wasn't even a song from Hideki Naganuma 😂
Very cool video!
Very cool comment. 👍
@@Plexi.T very cool quick reply!
Now let’s hope he gets to work on the new Jet Set Radio!
I can't WAIT to see him get announced for the next game!
oh we are sinking into this one bois
I wanted to make this one extra long 😈. It my biggest video yet.
"Stevie Wonder" is actually Ray Charles depicted in the first minute. Nitpicking, I know, but just wanted to bring awareness.
this is a certified Funky video now
Hihi! Currently giving the video a watch and there’s a lot of good information here! Just wanted to point out some things about the Sonic Rush section. The CD album has original Album only arranges of a handful of songs in the game, unrestricted by the DS’s limitations. The version of Vela-Nova playing during that section is the Album version.
The track Bomber Barbara is pronounced like the name Barbara, at least I believe.
Lastly, the Blaze tracks in the game, while based off of Hideki’s original compositions, are in fact remix arranges by assistant Sound Director Teruhiko Nakagawa, which is a big reason why they sound so different.
Dude, this man is fuckin prometheus, giving us fire 🔥🔥🔥
Dude seems cool
57:49 - I can almost see the pure confusion in mc’s eyes
I remember the second part of bomber bombara used to scare me as a child
Not only is he an amazing music composer is my fav twiiter account for shitposting
I tried to avoid any of the... drama he's posted on there.
JET SET RADIOOOOO
You forgot to spotlight Love Sensation from Air Gear's OST! That's his true magnum opus imo.
1:48:16 he still active on twitter
Why doesnt this have more views
Thanks for the kind words. Also 10K is a decent amount in my opinion 👌.
Should've named it "Understanding the Concept of Hideki Naganuma"
That's wouldn't have sounded as good im afraid 😅
@@Plexi.T I respectfully disagree
Kinda don't have the time to watch this, but dope ass thumbnail my dude!
Thanks
You should look into miho hatori. She's a member of "cibo matto" another band featured in jet set. She's done work with gorlliaz and the beastie boys. Also I didn't know this till this year but the latch bros are the beastie boys 😂😂
Thanks, I might check her out later.
We do not understand the concept of a Sega Saturn! - Malcolm 32X.
Did anyone else notice that when he said Stevie Wonder 0:31 that it was showing a video of Ray Charles?...
lol
I laughed a lot
Oooops, didn't know I made that mistake 😅
Kinda representative of the general lack of substantial musical knowledge behind this music documentary.
13:42 Sega saturn with the photo of a Japanese mega drive?
good to see i wasn't alone in seeing that goof in the video lmao
Ikr.
isnt there a new game coming out for jet set radio?
Try put any Hideki Naganuma music/soundtrack over any game you're playing and it immidiately changes the game into very nothing but good ol' funky vibes.
Hideki is my favourite music composer of all time and i STILL find new games he made music on. Even in this video was something i didn't know. And, actually, something i do know but wasn't mentioned.
The track VENDOR POP also is in Kurohyou 2 (btw "kurohyou ruy ga" is far from the full name, you butchered the OG japanese name of the series - Ryu Ga Gotoku), used in multiplayer matches. I have seen info that it was written for Super Monkey Ball 3D initially. Also the fact that Monkey Ball 3D has a track SOLIDNESS, that was written for... Kurohyou! And it shows, SOLIDNESS with a yakuza game a lot more than silly monkey game.
My guess is that SEGA just kinda had VENDOR POP lying around and shoved it in y5 and kurohyou just to have something. This explains why it's not on Y5 official OST. Looks like this was the reason Hideki Left SEGA.
Dang, I learn something new everyday about this man. I know I couldn't possibly cover EVERYTHING in this video, so it's nice to have people add in their further knowledge and insight onto things.
Do we know if Hideki Naganuma will compose for the new Jet Set Radio game? I feel like his music is such a core part of that game's identity, that it'd be a shame if they don't at least have him up as a guest composer...
He has to be. Who the hell else would they choose? Maybe 2 Mello.
@@Plexi.T god i hope they are BOTH on it
Can naga speak english or understand it or does he has a translator because i wonder how he does cut into the syllables of words?
Didn't you already post it before?
I had to delete and reupload it due to some copyright stuff on the songs.
is nobody gonna say anything about the mega drive used for a saturn mention?
What do you mean by that?
@@Plexi.T at 13:43, you said "playstation and saturn", and showed a playstation and a mega drive that has a Mega CD attached to it.
@LizardOfOz69 oh, I think I was using the same footage in the editor and decided to leave it like that 😅
@@Plexi.T lol.
oh well, at least a Mega CD has a CD, so....
Could have had the full 32x/Genesis/CD combo at least.
actually "let mom sleep (no sleep remix)" was made by richard jacques! not hideki naganuma! :0
Are you serious? Damn I messed up with that one.

all songs can can be found in the pastebin of the description in the video. Unless you mean the actual performer itself. You can find that video on CZcams by looking up "Electone performance".
the vid title is: Yamaha Electone Festival 2019: [Tan Khin Swee Elizabeth] Like This?
It's not in the pastebin though @@Plexi.T
@@lucasredfern8877 yeah I know, I forgot to add that one to it since I only used it for a video clip and not much afterward. I think someone in this thread mentioned how you can find it though.
Why the hell would it be his final impact on gaming? He's only 51. Good video tho.
Vendor Pop really reminds me of one of Deavid Soul's track which I think was used in some of the first Jet Grind Radio but not sure if it really was there or not czcams.com/video/bDCjzq4mBzI/video.html
Something about that sort of like retro carnival type sound with the funkiness too which they both have
Oh my gosh, that sounds exactly like Vendor Pop in its percussion and swinging beat. I definitely see the connection.
5:41 My friend, you might wanna strengthen your Black music research it was quite common for folks to be listening to black music during that time, also, these artists were Black Americans, so having an African influence would imply that the influence comes from those of the continent of Africa i.e. Sudan or Nigeria which is a major difference. Funkadelic was a psychedelic funk band, not a genre and neither Stevie Wonder or Prince were Hip-Hop artists. Prince especially since he had a turbulent relationship with Hip-Hop…especially in the 70s, he was more adjacent to a funk/ pop-rock artist during this time
A little nuance for R&B, while it technically stemmed from Blues, by the time Hideki was a teen, it was a genre that had gone through several changes expanding into something else entirely. I know these are nitpicks, but for an artist that was heavily inspired by black artists, these are huge points for those watching this who are not as familiar with these genres
Starting the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk with a piece NOT by him kinda lies to the audience.
Doo. Doo. Doo. Doo HA
Edit: Dude the JSR gameplay footage is going to give me a seizure. What the hell is happening with the heavy snap camera? Snapping all over the place...
I've played the game many times and my camera never did that.
There’s nothing to understand when he’s racist to Mexicans he out here making a song about “this beautiful race of people” and yet he’s out here clowning on my people. No thank you. Where are the latch bros, where is Richard Jacques, you know actual good music 😊🎉
Learn to separate art from the artist 😊
