  • The Boy Who Started the Syrian War
We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria.
Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war.
More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal.
Now a young man, fighting on the frontline for the Free Syrian Army, Mouawiya admits that had he known what the consequences of his actions would be, he would never have taunted the country's president, Bashar al-Assad.
His life has been transformed by that adolescent prank. He has lost friends and relatives, including his father. And Syria has been changed forever.
The Boy Who Started the Syrian Civil War offers a glimpse into life in Deraa since the start of the conflict.
We meet Syrians trying to lead normal lives amid the chaos as well as those who have taken up arms against Assad's forces.

My response to all comments below: have you forgotten how it all started in 2011. Have you really never followed Syria entirely for 6 years long???? No, you all don't as your comments shows. However, the documentary shows some inaccuracy as it doesn't really match with the chronology of all footages I have collected from the region of Daraya (2011-2017). Then, the title is also misleading as it suggest that the war started there. The armed conflict started in Homs City, not by one person as the documentary is suggesting. A demonstration in Homs City calling to take up arms and the urge to the Syrian army to protect the people, which were honored by large number of defecting soldiers who keep sticking by the oath not to use their guns against own people. It is not seen in the documentary. The documentary does not even explain the viewer in what order the situation ran into the current war: 1. uprising, 2.armed conflict, 3. declared as civil war by the ICRC on july 15, 2012, 4. 2nd half of civil war turned into a war between Islamist fighters with their own agendas against Assad troops who were assisted by the Iranian Republican Guards & Hezbollah. If one should criticize a country or religion, start not only learning first what was more behind the Arab Spring ..... yes, conflict between ruling minorities and oppressed majorities, in some Arab countries even the other way around. The documentary still remains very interesting to watch. However, the viewer must be aware that it is about a story with a personal view. Respect that view.

Ruud Wedding There was also the paycheck from Saudi and Qattar offered to any Syrian soldier who defected. And while the first significant insurgent groups rose in Homs, the combat began in Daraa. I remember seeing the wounded soldiers in Damascus returning from Daraa in 2011 when it was still supposedly peaceful. I remember in 2012 when I was still a school student how during April 1st everyone was saying "Syria is in peace... (that's what the goverment kept saying at the time, and getting seriously mocked for) April 1st lie!". I remember seeing skirmishes on TV as early as February. I remember two of my friends being kidnapped (14 years olds at the time) while going to a resort in a Damascus suburb to play football, as early as March. Two black jeeps came from the side of the road and surrounded the cars masked armed men came out and took them along with their older brother who was driving the car. They knew exactly who they were taking, it seems they had received a tip that they are from a wealthy business family and were waiting for them since they went to that resort alot. They were taken to Daraa and stayed their for a month until their families payed an exuberant ransom for their release. I remember too many things to list in a comment but all I will say is this, believe and support whatever side you want. But 2011 was NOT a year of peaceful protests.
