I love movies
I love movies.
he loves movies
watch fluke
Did you watch the new Beavis & Butthead?
Nobody asked you, JOEL. Stop trying to make this about you, JOEL! We're here for Joel, not YOU, JOEL!
I think movies are “okay”
Being real life friends with SpongeBob is the biggest flex in CZcams history.
There was a time when I could quote the entire spongebob movie from beginning to end.
Same, love that movie.
I could only quote the entirety of the stolen balloon episode.
My dad and I always quote the mustache scene, just brilliant writing for such a "dumb" movie
@@bigcoffinhunter5500 my favorite quote was
"Did you see my underwear?"
"No."
"Did you want to?"
@4xdblack Patrick to the Princess just before they go down the stairs! They get their mustaches in that scene too. Fuck it, I'm about to go to bed I'm gonna watch the movie.
No TV show has ever had a theatrical finale like Spongebob. As a kid I was glad they kept making new episodes after the movie, but they never came close to the original 3 seasons and movie. RIP Stephen Hillenburg
The line "What will it be, Mustard or Ketchup?" is still my go to memory for when I need to make myself smile for a picture or something.
I have ADHD which can make people see you as kind of immature and not take you seriously like Spongebob in the movie, and for that reason this movie has always been special for me. The speech at the end hits especially different as an adult. A lot of stories with this kind of character arc have the message that you should change yourself for other people to respect you, but this movie is like eff that you're capable of doing all the things you want to do while still being you, and I really appreciate that as someone who is unlikely to ever been seen as "normal", not that I wanna be. Spongebob movie was my Joker tbh
Could not have put it better myself👌🏻exactly my experience as well. I Fuckin love this movie
You are the most down to earth, tell-the-human-experience-like-it-is kind of guy I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Keep being you, man.
He's such a beautiful soul
If he turns out to be a poopoo head irl ima move to Mars.
@@megamungis same
@@megamungis He is truly my last hope for humanity.
I will never forget watching the movie when it came out. it was the first time in my life that I remember crying, it was when SpongeBob and Patrick were drying out.
Joel is one of the very few people on this platform that genuinely makes me smile.
Truly one of my favorite movies ever. I'm getting old, 32 now. It's strange how emotional that goofy cartoon comedy movie can make me.
That 35mm screening at SVA was amazing. I remember the crowd cheering like crazy at the beginning and when the Goofy Goober Rock scene began. Twas a magical time.
The 1st film is the best example of a perfect film, there isn't a single bit that's weak or skippable, truly a Zenith in cinema
On my twentieth birthday I was talking with a coworker of mine and she said "do you have any plans for your birthday?" and I said "yeah, I'm gonna have a couple friends over and we're gonna watch the Spongebob Movie together" and she said "a Spongebob Movie drinking game? How fun!" and I thought "haha no that's not what I said."
But I thought about that a lot as I was watching the movie that night. It was the first time I had seen the movie in years, and its message in getting older while still maintaining a childlike wonder for the world was really impactful. I was entering early adulthood but at the same time taking the time to go back to my roots and enjoy the Spongebob Squarepants Movie without bothering to change anything to fit with stereotypical activities of our age group, like turning it into a drinking game. I was just excited to watch the movie!
It's lovely to hear your thoughts on this, the movie really is hilarious and incredibly profound at the same time. It feels like the perfect culmination of this television show that was such a bundle of joy and hilarity for so many years. I too plan on returning to the movie and the first three seasons for as long as I'm around.
I watched goodlongpee at the Krusty Krab again in honor of this video
Joel is also a big "meet your heroes" type guy. I'm damn sure meeting him to even just quickly tell him how much I appreciate him and his work would be a wonderful thing.
The Spongebob Squarepants Movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s so fun and reminds me to never underestimate someones potential no matter how young or old they are.
I love how everyone gets a different message out of it, it just has so many ways to interpret it and not many kid's movies are like that. What a film.
The bald king neptune scene is the best
i'm very convinced that the majority of people are still kids, emotionally. we were told we had to "grow up" so we all learned how to play that part, but now our work is to befriend and learn from the kids inside of us- how to practice love and joy, how to move through cycles of emotion, how to be in community with others, how to give ourselves what we need. let's go goofy goobers. let's take all these made up rules far, far less seriously
My local movie theater closed down last Thursday - they announced it on Wednesday and by Thursday it was shuttered. The final marquee reads "Never stop recommending movies".
My dad fell asleep in the theater when we saw the Spongebob movie. He woke up when everyone started shuffling passed our seats. Thankfully no snoring
Patrick in fishnets was the funniest shit that 11 year old Alex had ever seen, absolutely lost it with my friend and dad in the theater
Positivity is so contagious. Love that shit. Fuck yeah.
I’m so glad I’m not the only who who completely loves this movies! Attached in an emotional way
One time I was sitting with a group of people, and one of them looked at me with a little bit of judgement in their voice, and I just looked at them, and perfectly in time with the film, I just said "You don't need a licence to drive a sandwich".
I don't think I knew anyone else that knew how special that flick was. Feels good to see I'm not alone
I only discovered SpongeBob much later, so I’ve never had those fond childhood memories, but the other day me and my son stumbled across the SpongeBob Movie and he absolutely loves it. I’ve actually been so moved and surprised by it, and … well, the whole reason this video’s been suggested to me is, we both absolutely love the soundtrack and every afternoon ends with us putting it on and dancing together for the duration haha. Thanks so much for this earnest chat
Fr the SpongeBob movie doesn't miss a beat, the jokes never get old, it's just a frikin classic
Bro held my full attention for nine whole minutes with no cuts. Incredible review, incredible movie.
I could close my eyes and watch this movie as a kid, shot for shot. Nothing but good memories
This video put a big smile on my face. Brought back memories of wearing out my dvd as a kid watching the end credits over and over again to listen to Ocean Man.
The SpongeBob movie was one of the first movies I watched. My siblings and I would die laughing at the bar/bubble, and gas station scenes.
I'm 62 and I'm a goofy goober 😁 I love this move. First watched with my son when it came out and often watched since to cheer me up
Couldn't have said it better myself. Such a foundation of levity in my life and humor. Recently my best friend since childhood and I got some doodlebob tattoos and we bump em together so they can high five when we are being mega silly.
I also saw that 2018 screening! What a treat to see it on film and hear from Derek Drymon. I remember he explained how they made King Neptune different from the show so he could be all the funnier (and what’s funnier than a guy with a bowling pin for a head?). Such a special film.
If this wasn’t part of your childhood I will do anything to mend your scars
I'll always respect when shows that are made for younger audiences don't insult the intelligence of that audience. I always think about Mr. Rogers and how he insisted on having jazz piano in his shows instead of the more "kid friendly" music the network was encouraging him to use because he believed in children's musical and emotional intelligence. The greatest kids shows don't try and dumb down their content, but instead focus on things that everybody can relate to and enjoy.
SpongeBob came to Russia pretty late, but I fell in love with it, and when the movie came out, I bought the DVD and watched it so many times. I think I might rewatch it again.
the Spongebob Movie is peak cinema and dancing randomly is fun
also i recommend Alex Bale's Spongebob theories they are really entertaining and over the top
i was at one of the tom kenny concerts in la a couple months ago, and i saw you, but decided to leave you be to have a good evening with friends. his band is phenomenal, so fun, and tom is a real down to earth dude. if i ever run into you again i'll probably say howdy.
spongebob is so timeless. when i started to hit puberty i started to feel a bit shameful that i was still enjoying spongebob and i should be watching "more mature" stuff. those were wasted years, and im glad i realized how silly a thought that was when i did.
I’m glad you’re talking about the deep topics no one else will
Fully agree on those first few seasons of SpongeBob. Interesting to hear that confirmed
I love that he loves movies!
This was lovely, Joel. That movie is super special to me as well.
Thanks for sharing.
I love the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie too.
ocean man 🥲
i absolutely love the first SpongeBob movie! it's tragic what happened after that movie...
What happened???

no bit, this is my favorite movie of all time. i am so happy to see you, my favorite film maker, talk about this movie
First of all I just discovered you have a channel about movies and I'm F'ing stoked to check out the rest of the channel. Secondly, this is an absolutely amazing movie that I really enjoyed as a kid. As an immature twenty-something who could probably use a coming of age roadtrip this movie speaks to me more than it ever has before. In high school the pirate ship from the opening scene docked near where I live and I got to walk through it with my best friend, this ended up being just a few months before it sank. Also, going to wrestling shows with Tom Kenny is the coolest thing anyone has ever said.
By far the best Comedy experience I have had in theaters when it's movie first came out. I was already at the age where I was getting too old for SpongeBob but my little brother wanted to see it so I took him and I had a blast
love everything you do, Joel.
the first time I cursed was when i saw a trailer for this movie and realized it wasnt going to be out until November of that year (six months away)
I screamed fuck in front of my family. i was seven lmao
“When I’m dead… hopefully it will be a long time.” Joel, have you already forgotten about that WW2 Soviet-issue land mine?
I was enamoured with your conversational way of telling us about your review of the movie! Literally inspired me to make it a point to watch the SpongeBob movie again, its been years since ive watched it.
Oh yeah. I always dance whenever music is good and people start joining every time. Is that most people want to do it but are scared of being recorded or being "that guy" but when someone else is dragging the attention they feel free to do it too.
the spongebob movie is the only movie i own digitally
This movie holds such a special place in my heart too. The music in the credits in particular remind me of such bittersweet memories.
Who in their right mind would break up with macho heartthrob Joel Haver?
It's wild. The SpongeBob movie is over 20 years old and still to this day is fresh.
Who would have thought! The SpongeBob movie was filmed 72 years ago... time does fly
The sp8ngebob movie always reminds me of when my sister was 6 and we watched it on my brother's computer, we both laughed our asses off when Patrick showed up with the sexy legs. My sisters said it a core memory for her and for me too . I love SpongeBob ❤️
I love these video it feels like talking with a friend
i had the unique experience of meeting one of my roommates and best friends when we were both going through seperate really bad breakups when mutual friends forced us to go watch the first Sonic movie in theatres shortly before covid went into full force
spongebob means a lot to me too as weird as that sounds. very well written jokes that everyone can relate to. I can still remember quotes and iconic episodes to this day
My first kiss with my then-girlfriend now-wife was during the Goofy Goober Rock climax of this film
That review was insano style
Spongebob is great but I really liked Heffer Wolfe before there was Spongebob.. it was cool in that episode where Pearl takes Spongebob to her prom and they get tossed out.. as the crowd walks back in to the party, the one fish stays behind and in a clear Heffer voice says something like, "Go ruin someone else's prom." That ended up being the best part of that episode for me.
One of my favourite cinema experiences was seeing this film and literally laughing the whole time
My family to this day still quotes from that movie too many good lines in the movie
Well it has "Movie" in it's name and I really like movies
Watched the Bob in theaters yesterday, changed my perspective in a lot of things.
I feel totally the same about the movie, it’s def my all time favorite
I fucking love this guy
I feel bamboozled, I thought you only had one channel and I've watched you for a few years lmao
Even though we disagree on a lot, SpongeBob is something both me and my dad can agree on and bond around. 😊
I apologize for my cat's behavior, while watching this video, he would constantly bop your face
Happened to just buy the Blu-ray the other day! Gotta introduce my youngest sister to it
That movie has brought more joy to more groups of friends than almost any other I bet
It always feels good to be the first one on the dance floor and break the ice. Bands always appreciate the support, too!
I remember in middle school, a group of us came back from a band performance and were supposed to go back to class. Instead, two of my friends sat at a table for almost an hour and reenacted this entire movie from start to finish from memory for us. It's still one of my favorite memories from that time.
Hey I went to that screening at the SVA theater too!
I love you reviewing movies
Everything, it means everything. I was a bit young when it came out so it;s so weird seeing that the princess was Scarlett Johansson. Great voice cast all around. Can't forget David Hasselhoff.
Spongebob movie hits different as an adult 🤣
I love this so much Joel thank you lol. Early SpongeBob seasons are near and dear to my heart, I’m so glad Tom Kenny sounds like such a good person. SpongeBob is exactly what’s keeping the kid in me alive. It’s refreshing to hear all of this from someone else, I’m so used people groaning when I talk about SpongeBob and what it means to me lol
I love your honesty and the good vibes you put out. Have a good day.
Didn’t even know about this second channel but now I’m super excited I do. Gonna check out the other ones, really enjoyed this.
One of my favorite movies ever and surprisingly powerful message. Great movie
Sometimes moments are for us. Sometimes, like Tom Kenny's best day ever, was for him. Ain't it beautiful to help make that moment, even on accident?
Idk. Stay beautiful homie :)
that's his real haircut
Is that coconut head from middle school survival guide
Thanks for sharing this story it’s a great reminder of what’s important in life
So important to keep that childhood wonder alive, especially in times of intense, hard things happening. Last year your movie contest did that for me, and a whole lot of Legos. Your videos have always REALLY helped me in this area especially. I used to make videos just for fun all the time, and you inspired me to keep doing that. I started doing some movie making contests at work on our long saturdays. I'm just really thankful to hear you talk about these things all the time, having the platform you have. I literally feel like I comment this same thing on every one of these videos but, how can I not? Literally every time it's just such a breath of fresh air and really helps me and I'd rather tell ya about it. Thanks man, love and appreciate the person you've decided to let yourself be.
This will always be my favorite childhood movie, I think it’s the first movie I can remember even seeing besides maybe Finding Nemo or some Veggie Tales movie (both still great, but SpongeBob is the funniest shit ever)
I absolutely love this video. That movie is legendary, thank u for putting it out there into the world
What does Joel think of Mel Brooks? “Young Frankenstein” is one of my favorite movies and I would love to hear your thoughts, Joel. ❤
been binging this channel all day. great stuff as always, joel!
Aw thanks Karsten! Happy you’re diving in! I love your stuff, especially the monthly movie wrap ups!
I haven't seen the movie. I think I might just go watch it now.
I really appreciate you sharing this. Keep up the great work!
the review we've all been waiting for
When I read your Letterboxd review of this it made me so happy!
I had a friend of a friend say that out of 4 shows (if i recall correctly: SpongeBob, regular show, adventure time, teen titans) that SpongeBob is the easiest thing to get rid of. Something about that answer made me not like him. Not that he didn't like the show but because he basically said that the show is for dumb people. I'm glad there's someone with a platform like joel who lets people know doing dumb things and having fun, using that almost lost, child-like part of your brain is a cool thing. As dumb as some things may be, if you like it don't let anyone tell you you shouldn't. Sometimes the most childish part of yourself is what makes you happiest.
I loved your review on Letterboxd, glad to see you make a video on it
Love these reviews of positive movies and experiences so much Joel. I would love to hear more movies from your childhood you loved.
