Batman Returns is a 1992 American superhero film directed by Tim Burton and produced by Denise Di Novi and Burton, based on the DC Comics character Batman.
The sequel to the 1989 film Batman, it is the second installment of Warner Bros. initial Batman film series, and stars Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman, alongside Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle and Michael Murphy.
In Batman Returns, Batman faces the Penguin, who plots to kill all of Gotham City's firstborn sons, while dealing with Catwoman, who seeks vengeance against Max Shreck, a corrupt tycoon who allies with the Penguin to bring Gotham City under his control. - Zábava
Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman still hasn't been surpassed yet. She was amazing in the role.
Never understood the hate. I always enjoyed it. Love Michael Keaton's Batman, Danny's Penguin, Michelle's Catwoman, the direction by Tim Burton.
I Agree
One of the most underrated comic book sequels out there. As much as I have warmed up to The Dark Knight, I still prefer this Batman sequel the most. It's just so unique in terms of its production/art direction, it's plot and the characterization. The cast is spectacular with Keaton, Pfieffer, DeVito and Walken all delivering excellent performances. The elements that were so effective in the first film are maintained here and in some ways are enhanced like Elfman's score. And it's Burton unhinged and allowed to take as many risks as possible and as a result it's magical dark and tragic wonderland of gothic action and adventure.
And do you like how the show of Batman TAS had some elements of the Burton movies? i mean Selina, Penguin, the city, Jack Napier and all?
You should review this in June
Mike I dont think you will like Godzilla vs kong
@@Johnlindsey289 I love how TAS has elements of the Burton films. And that's on purpose. TAS is inspired by Burton's Batman films and in many ways is a tribute to them. Without the success of the Burton films there is no TAS as we know it today.
@@OcpCommunications
Yup and both this movie and TAS were in production in late may 1991
@@Mr.Rodgers7 GvK is good fun.
Michelle Pfeiffer is still the best live action version of Catwoman ever and I loved how dark and sinister Danny Devito's Penguin was and never gave two shits about anything lol. Also, Tim Burton's direction for both movies is just gorgeous and I love how gothic they are.
I wish parents back then didn't get butt hurt, so that we could have gotten a Batman 3 from Burton. (Although I do enjpy Batman forever)
Good review :)
The parents getting butt hurt is not actually what led to Burton not doing Batman 3. He was signed on to it and was in pre-production and had plans to have Robin Williams step in as the Riddler. But the studio wasn't going to do what it took to get Keaton back in the role as Batman. Keaton understandably wanted a raise for Batman 3 and Warner Bros. decided to be cheap and not pay him his asking price. So as soon as Keaton left, Burton left along with him and stayed as a producer and nothing else.
I guess I had "cool" parents and grandmas and aunts and uncles. I got to see the movie in theaters when I was 3 going on 4. The movie was not scary at all, and I never picked up on how messed up/sick in the head The Penguin was until I got older. Plus my grandmas and aunts and uncles would still buy me Batman Returns merchandise after all the backlash and after I saw the movie. I think parents forget how a child's mind operates. They don't come out with all the same knowledge that adults have and see things the same way as adults. The whole time I was watching Batman Returns in the movie theater was "IT'S BATMAN!!!" Plus I had seen Batman 89 a whole bunch of times before seeing Batman Returns. Mainly because I could recognize Danny Elfman's main theme for Batman carrying over from 89 to Returns along with being able to recognize the same actors playing Bruce Wayne/Batman, Alfred, and Commissioner Gordon. Batman Returns will always be special to me too since it was the first Batman movie I saw in a movie theater, and the first movie altogether in a movie theater. Plus I'm a sucker for the Batman and Christmas setting combo. I don't know what it is about that combo, but I really like it.
@@OcpCommunications I would’ve preferred a third Batman movie directed by Tim Burton instead of The Joel Schumacher Batman movies.
Billy Dee Williams would’ve also played Two-Face.
I’ll put it in that video right here discussing more in detail as the what this movie would’ve been like. Take breaks if you need to because it’s a long video.

One of the better Batman movies imo , I like It more than Dark Knight at least.
Actually I never reallly liked Dark Knight or Dark Knight Rises , both extremely overrated to me.
The only film In the Nolan trilogy I tliked was Batman Begins , which felt fresh In 2005
and I saw It on release. Tim Burtons first 2 Batman films were good.
I loved this review! Up there with your Phantom Menace review!
I would've love to have seen a third Batman film with Keaton & Burton back to direct. Lol 24:02 exactly. Too me Batman Returns is an entertaining sequel, somedays I wonder if this is my favorite but I love Batman '89. It's tough. I love the dark elements here and Burton still was great director at this time, I don't care much for his stuff now. Great review of Batman Returns.
And the criticisms about this not being like the comics. Batman has killed before and has been this dark. Batman Returns isn't that far out of left field when it comes to that approach. I am so sick of hearing that. I read comics. And I know that Batman in his first few issues started with a gun and killed people. Since those early comics are what Burton was given by Warner Bros. for research for Batman(1989) it makes sense that Batman is what Burton brought to the screen in 89 and with Returns.
I so agree with you
I remember my parents took me to theaters to see this, 1992 was a Batman year. We got Batman the animated series, Happy meals at McDonald's, Batmobile at 6 flags and I was Batman for Halloween.
HOw old were you when you saw this at the movies? i was 10 and i remember those too
@@Johnlindsey289 I was 6 or 7
You hear about Batmania with respect to its predecessor. But I witnessed more hype and merchandising with the sequel: I had a Batman Returns cup and production book before its theatrical release.
@@brandonginsburg3120 Yes, I had the cup, I had Batman Returns coloring book, I had Batman Returns: The Penguin Plot book I bought from school in troll order book ad.
Happy Birthday to Christopher Walken is 78 today
Awesome video
One issue I hear from people is that the motvation for the villans makes no sense. Like Catwoman wanting to frame Batman with Penguin.
She doesn't like Batman at this point. So why not?
Still the greatest Batman film by far. Nothing's changed.
1. Batman Returns
2. Batman 1989
3. Batman Forever
4. Batman & Robin and Batman V. Superman tied
5. The Batman
Fuck the Dark Knight trilogy. Rises is the worst Batman film.
This isn't my favorite Batman movie, but I still absolutely love it and will remain special to me. My favorite Batman movie is obviously The Dark Knight and Christian Bale is my favorite Batman/Bruce Wayne. Batman Begins I would say is second. But I still love Batman Returns. First Batman movie I saw in theaters, and the first movie altogether I saw in theaters. Unless my memory is blackening out the first movie altogether that I saw in a movie theater. But I enjoyed it. Was only 3 going on 4 when it released. I also really like the Batman and Christmas setting combo. Halloween is my favorite holiday, especially since I was born in October, but I am an absolute sucker for the Batman and Christmas setting combo. There is something about it that works. Also, Batman Returns is the first movie to introduce me to Christopher Walken. So there is that. I don't get the backlash either the movie received. I never found the movie scary, and I didn't pick up how sick in the head The Penguin was until I got to about the age of 10. So parents wasted their time flipping out about the movie.
And because of their bitching Batman Continues directed by Tim Burton was cancelled And instead we got both the Joel Schumacher Batman movies which were terrible. Batman 1989, and Batman Returns are both great movies but I personally prefer Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Batman, and Batman Mask Of The Phantasm. I grew up with both the Tim Burton Batman movies, Mask Of The Phantasm, and The Dark Knight Trilogy.
Have you read the script to Batman Continues? It sounded great Michael Keaton would’ve of course returned with Tim Burton directing. Billy Dee Williams would play Two-Face, and Robin Williams would have played the Riddler. I’m not gonna give too much away because I do want you to watch is in the video but to give a short synopsis Batman is in hiding for a full year do the ice princess murder from Batman Returns, and Two-Face and Riddler plan to kill Batman.
I’ll put a video link right here.
czcams.com/video/sA1WU-9UVxw/video.html
The Dark Knight is such sloppy, poorly written movie. If it wasn't for Heath Ledger's memorable Joker character the Dark Knoght's flaws and shotty writing would be of obvious notice.
One of my favorite sequels ever. The hate for it is honestly ridiculous and never made sense to me. The first 3 batman films are some of my favorite movies of all time and not just from the superhero genre but in general. Love them to death.
It’s hated because it’s a character-destroying, incoherent trainwreck
I wanted to revisit these Batman movies again and your reviews again because me and you both like the Tim Burton Batman movies. I actually don't even mind Batman Forever too much its silly and the story is messy but it's fun and Jim Carry had me laughing the whole movie. To me, Batman doesn't really have to be dark because in the comics he was light-hearted at different times for me it all comes down to the execution of the movie if you do it well I'm fine with light or dark Batman. Tim Burtons Batman films are more comic book fantasy based in comic book worlds the Nolan movies are what if Batman existed in reality and the Joel ones like Forever and Batman and Robin are more family-friendly Batman movies trying to capture some of Adam West. Batman killed in the first comics before the no-kill code was added later it was introduced to lighten comics and make them more family-friendly. I don't have a problem with Batman killing long as it makes sense in the context of what the director is going for or making because comic book continuity is all over the place and constantly retconned. The interesting thing about Batman Returns is at the time Studio got upset because parents got upset it was too dark for very small children but today all people want is super dark Batman. As for Forever people liked it at the time for Jim Carry being in it but today it's looked down on for being campy and goofy because people compare it to Nolan. Burton's third movie had Riddler as the only villain with Question Mark shaved in his head with a pet mouse with him wanting Robin Willaims to play it. Had we gotten Burtons and Keaton's Batman 3 it would have been more of the Gothic somber tone of this. As far as Batman in Snyder cut Batman normally doesn't fight alien creatures because they are too powerful compared to his human villains. Batman normally beats super-powered villains because he has time to prep and use created tools to use against them Batman beats more powerful villains by using prep time. With super-powered aliens, that's more of Superman's territory. Whenever Batman takes out super-powered villains it's because he has had time to figure out their weakness and uses a special tool to kill them or beat them that's why some fans prefer Batman alone and not with the Justice League because he's more in line with the Punisher or Daredevil.
I don't understand the hate for this either. This is one of my favourite Batman films.
Michelle Pfeiffer is sexy as fuck in this.
I love how dark this film is and Danny Elfman's theme where Selina Kyle makes the Catwoman suit os one of my favourite themes.
My least favourite Batman film is Batman Forever... by far!
This was definitely Tim Burton's best era for films.
Batman Returns is an expressionist art piece. Most Tim Burton films have some connection to death but he approaches the topic in a playful manner. He's not trying to minimize death but to treat it with a bit of levity and humor. Betelgeuse probably being the best example.
Hey Matt have you seen King of New York and did you like it?
I didn't mind it.
Still my favourite Batman movie. I just love the look of Gotham Burton created. Elfman's score is excellent especially the Birth & Death of the penguin.
I don't really remember a backlash to this film, not at the time anyway. I thought it was cool. But wasn't Burton done with Batman after this? He was gonna do Superman with Nic Cage, lol. Have you seen that doc Matt, 'Death of Superman Lives'? Now that was something I do remember comic dorks were raging against. Just the very idea of Burton casting Nic Cage as Superman made them insane with rage. The doc is pretty interesting. Kevin Smith is in it, presumably he trashes Batman Returns because Burton trashed his draft of Superman Lives.
My favorite pre-nolan batman film . Hey I just watched Godzilla vs. Kong. It was bad. I had a hard time finishing it.
My fav Xmas film.
My favorite Batman movie
I can relate to Brace Wayne in the Tim Burton Batman films. Not so much for Batman Forever for some reason. Anyway, I remember McDonald's gave out toys for this movie. Fun times. Well, I tried to write a Batman movie once. I called it The Boy Wonder and The Cape Crusader. It had Mr. Freeze as the villain in it. In the plot, we find out Mr. Freeze is wife was too a mad scientist as well. They both wanted to create a superhuman race who can live in minus degree temperature. They plan to freeze the whole entire world someday somehow through technology. Anyway, Bruce Wayne in the plot questions himself if he still wants to be Batman or live a normal life. He tries it out and meets a woman at a bar who is into dominatrix which to me is Harley Quinn. I brought the Riddler into the story. He became something called The Wizard with supernatural powers. The Boy Wonder is dealing with college and crimefighting at night with Batman. Mr. Freeze wants to revive his wife through medical science. Mr. Freeze and The Riddler team up. They both make Arkham Asylum their domain. Mr. Freeze starts to freeze the world as he has the cure to revive his wife. She revives and becomes a super villain as Mr. Freeze becomes a monster because he injects himself with his own experiment and it has side-effects. Anyway, I stopped writing it. I wrote a Mortal Kombat screenplay called Mortal Kombat: Rapture instead and finished it.
I always felt that Batman and Penguin should be like Eliot Ness and Al Capone from the Untouchables
Danny DeVito played a very good Penguin, he was a great villain in the same vein as Joker.
In Dumbo, Keaton and DeVito roles are reversed.
My favorite batman film I've seen old videos of people complaining about it ridiculous.
this is still my favorite super hero movie
underrated movie, i would argue debate, its better than dark knight even, 89 definitely is
Best Batman movie. The action is awesome. Batman kicking the clowns asses. Love everything about it. The penguin costume.

This is my favourite Batman film. I can't believe that cry baby Kevin Smith doesn't like it
It's a garbage movie and an even worse Batman movie
@@seancollins312 prefer Schumacher's films?
Matt you should have said to Kevin Smith, go J--K OFF to the Nolan Batman films. 😂

@@seancollins312 Why?
The Burton Batmans are what I picture in my head when it comes to the feel of what a Batman movie should be, yes..it is fine to have them be dark and miserable but I like a bit of dark humor with my Dark Knight if you catch my drift. Michelle is my favorite Catwoman, she's complex and tragic as well as alluring and sexy...I love her costume too. And also can there be a choice as perfect as Devito as Oswald/Penguin? I don't think so, well except for Mark Hamill as Joker in the animated series. Devito is perfect, and they definitely pulled all the stops. I understand that they kept the look of the Penguin under wraps, even the figure of the Penguin when the Batman Returns toyline came out - didn't look like Devito (it was a Superpowers line figure). I remember all the parental backlash that resulted in the Happy Meal promotion getting axed (soccer moms/parent groups are idiots). Also it's fittiing that Christopher Walken's character Max has a name that is a homage to the actor who played Count Orlock since I get some vamp vibes from Walken here, also it's fitting that you posted this on the day after Chris Walken's 78th birthday.
Great review, Batman Returns is one of the great sequels that’s superior to the original. It’s a shame that Burton didn’t get to complete a trilogy in this interpretation of Batman.👍👍
Wrong and laughably wrong again
@@seancollins312 what’s wrong with it?
@@pklentertainment5147 What's NOT wrong with it. It's an incoherent trainwreck and the dictionary definition proof of why you don't give full creative control to a director for a movie about a character he doesn't even like.
@@seancollins312 I see a dark and stylish comic book adventure with a directors tone and imagination that suits a Batman interpretation. The gothic fantasy makes a Batman more standout than the grounded realistic take that everyone’s obsessed with nowadays
@@seancollins312 I felt this way at first... but now I love the movie. It definitely is underrated. It’s like a dark fairy tale. Plus the ballroom scene is great.
Very underrated movie
This movie has way more flaws compared to Burtons first one this is more Burton film then Batman film the plot is little all over the place lol Christopher Walkens characters plan is never really explained he wants to zap the city power an store it why for what purpose is he planning to hold the city ransom at some point lol. Also the fact Catwoman never plays up the fact she is joined with Penguin but doesnt use him to get to Walkens character who she knows hes friends with so she can kill him. An the stupid circus guys are able to somehow get the Batmobile blueprints lol. But its still fun film I love the score an tone an enjoy the performances an Catwoman is great here even though she isnt like the comics version neither is Penguin but I like what Burton did with them here an while the Penguin army can be seen as silly in the climax. It really doesnt bother me as the movie itself despite being darker in tone with its themes then the first is still much more fairy tale zany vibe with killer circus gang lol. This movie was made at the time before comic book movies really did go dark like Watchmen so back in the day this was considered dark. It really isnt so much dark as it is simply vulgar compared to the first. There are lots of Pussy jokes with Penguin an Catwoman about getting laid snuck into this flick by Burton LMAO. I still like this one I love Catwomans look here costume wise an Keaton is great. Shame we never got Burton Batman part 3. But I guess that will now pretty much be the Flash movie with Keaton returning.
How do you feel about Batman TAS being like the burton movies?
@@Johnlindsey289 Its inspired by them with the theme an having Elfman batman score but the over all tone is the comics its not really like the burton world its much more comic accurate. Batman doesn't kill an catwoman isn't crazy zombie with 9 lives like in the burton films. I like that the show took Burton inspiration but over all its much more a comic batman show then a Burton one. In season 4 they also change the penguin look which was originally based on the burton one back to the standard comic look.
@@boomstickcritique902
Yup a mix of comics/burton/60s in one! and season 4 went back to the original look of Penguin while seasons 1 to 3 was Devito inspired and Selina Kyle had blonde hair in seasons 1 to 3 before season 4 when her hair was dark. Plus Jack Napier's name, the duckmobile for Penguin and so on.
The animated series also created a character, Harley Quinn, that then lived on as a regular character in the comics. I don't think that ever happened with a movie Batman character? For example Max Shreck was an original character in this movie but he never came into the comics.
Christ almighty, so many delusional raging hypocrites making garbage excuses for this character-destroying, incoherently written, trainwreck excuse for a Batman movie.
Are you describing The Dark Knight Rises or Zack Snyder's flicks?
@ramboraph4life TDKR is the worst out of the trilogy but it's still a good film and way better than whatever the hell batman returns is supposed to be. Batman returns is awful it's next to batman and Robin. Seriously you'll rant on the dark knight trilogy, spider man and several other films that are well received but you'll stick up for this garbage?
