  • Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel, and I’m a huge Eurovision fan as well as a musician. In todays video, I reacted to Serbia’s entry for Eurovision 2022: ‘In Corpore Sano ’ by KONSTRAKTA.
Last year, Serbia sent the fiery girlband ‘Hurricane’, and had a mid-table finish after a good vocal performance and decent televote score. This year, they have opted for something very different. ‘In Capore Sano’ is one of the craziest music videos of the year, with imagery of hand washing, crustacean munching and a Dalmatian. I really want to find out the meaning and link behind all of this. Also, whether Megan Markle is involved…did I hear her name.?
The song teeters on the fine line between experimental and catchy, which is an intelligent place to be in. The chorus, repetitive but definitely charming and intriguing, is one aspect of the song I really liked. It got me moving in my seat.
I also really enjoyed the drum beat, with the semi-quaver hi-hat pattern that was being used. It was very cool. The vocals were also a highlight, being low in tone and pitch, as well as powerful and stand out.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one, and despite a quite a lack of chords and general movement in the song, the experimental and unpredictable elements made up for this.
    Initial Score: 7.5/10

There is 3001 message fit in 3 minutes. I have just realized that song starts with - Onas eroproc ni somrefne snem - this is a Latin "Mens enfermos in corpore sano" (A sick mind in a healthy body) said in reverse, indicating that our entire approach to health and life is backwards. I believe that this is a main message.

I already liked her voice and the beat a lot, but I found that both those things really complimented the meaning....I agree it doesn't matter how it does, but at the same time I love it and want it to do well, but worry that people not knowing the words or the backstory won't appreciate as much as they could.

Key to understanding this song is symbolism. Meghan Markle's hair symbolizes public beauty/celebrity obsession. Liver and spleen - again, mentioned in the context of appereance (!), do you need more? She puts her trust in autonomous nervous system, why? Because there's little else to put the trust in. Creepy, but true. And the last few verses are a powerful condemnation of overall social superficiality. The whole song/performance is a reflection of modern world. It is weird and creepy just as much as the whole world is. This woman is giving us an opportunity to think. But we may choose naked butts and vocal exhibitionism instead. Serbia has made its choice and I'm proud of it.

She talks about how lately all the attention has been on physical health, not taking into account mental health. Also, I think artists are not considered regular workers in Serbia, so they don't get health insurance. Very meaningful song. The live performance had repetitive hand washing too. best Eurovision entry for me: 8.5 out of 10. A bit of dadaism and minimalistic; purposedly constrained from the dynamics to the range (like we all have been for a couple of years by now as we are all victims of covid - artists more than the average Joe). It's a song in tune with the times...it couldn't have been written 3 years ago nor 10 nor 50 nor 100 nor never before 2020.
I do like the subtle use of synth noize in the background - Laurie Anderson meets Dead Can Dance - a sort of gothic electro post punk.
Well done Serbia - 12 points from an Italian in UK.

Thanks for this review Rachel you analyses this masterpiece nicely. For me it would have been 10 out of 10 cos this song is an amazing work of art.
At first I had no real idea what it meant because of the language but from reading comments it apparently has many layers of meaning, including the idea that we are obsessed with physical cleanliness and beauty but neglect the mental health, and the final words of the song stress this too.
Also the washing of hands symbolic of washing hands of responsibility.
As well as references to the struggles of artists not having health insurance in Serbia. And references to Marina Abramovich.
Apparently there are loads of levels of meaning to it and even room for our own personal meanings. So much symbolism going on here.
Very deep and meaningful I love this.
This is the type of song I would like to see win the show.
But it is very outside the box but this year I’m Serbia all the way

This is the first time in many years that i'm proud of the Serbian entry, because we're finally sending something new and experimental, but also meaningful. The only thing i'm worried about is that people who don't speak Serbian will not understand it. So i'll try to explain at least one part of it.
Yes, in the beginning Meghan Markle is mentioned, as a symbol of our obsession with celebrities, their lives and how they look and how they behave.
Overall, the whole song is a critic of today's society, which is summed up in the final Latin verse
Weak mind in a healthy body
Sad soul in a healthy body
Desperate mind in a healthy body
Scarred mind in a healthy body
What we all are doing, worrying about physical things and forgeting about our inner peace.
I hope that more people who don't understand the language will eventually get it and give some appreciation to this art.
And greetings from Serbia to you Rachel, and thank you for your reaction. ❤️

3rd listen: BITI ZDRAVA. BITI ZDRAVA. BIT, BIT, BIT. (help, I can't stop!!)
PS: I think that food they're noisily scrunching is actually chicken. Even though I eat meat, I gotta agree that the squelching is pretty gross, but I think that's the idea. Why is it the idea? As we say in Malta and in Italy, "BOH (shrugs)". I'm just here for the art, the message (I recommend reading into it, cause it's quite a story) and delightful eccentricity.

    ❤️
The song has so deep mesage for humanity
This performance is art at it's purest. Although the lyrics may seem a bit silly at first, they are actually dead serious. There are so many layers to the song, and a lot of space for different interpretations. Konatrakta herself emphasized the importance of every listener's own interpretation.
    1. The song opens with a headline from a beauty magazine that Konstrakta once saw: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? - This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty; That's what beauty magazines do - they create insecurities about your hair, skin, nails, weight etc. and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration"
2.Then Konstrakta goes on talking about how our skin and hair often signal some inner health issues - for example liver and spleen problems - The reason she is thinking this is beacause she's worrying about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT because artists in Serbia still don't have health insurance. This is a paradox because Serbia, just like so many other countries has "universal healthcare" which in reality is not available to everyone.
    3. She then goes on saying how and artist must be healthy - a reference to Marina Abramovic (Art is beautiful, Artist must be beautiful), and the reason she needs to be healthty is again - because she can't afford to get treatment.
    4. Then comes the part about the autonomic nervous system and how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes a beautiful summer day, she is waking her dog, her heart is beating and that's it - it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart and lungs hoping they won't fail her (if they do fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that)
    5. She then explicitly states I DON'T HAVE THE CARD (meaning health insurance card)
    6. She wonders how will they help her then? While she's wondering that we can hear the backing vocals repeat the phrase Boze zdravlja - God grant us health. This is a reference to serbian culture where health is regarded as the most important part of life. God grant us health is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. This is again a paradox - in a society that nominally regards health as sacred she still doesn't have health insurance. She says - The (female) artist is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic.
    7. The final part is probably the most important one. It's basically a play on the old latin saying Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), exept that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy - the soul inside is desperate which is a commentary on our own reality, we are all obsessed with improving our health - we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements - but what about our mind? More often than not it is our mind that needs care, not the body.
And finally after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now?
Now about the handwashing: She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixon of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, a doctor refuses to treat you because of the law, and he needs to make peace with the fact that you may die even though he/her could (and would) help you.
The handwashing could also be seen as a reference to Marina Abramovic's performance Balkan Baroque in which she spent days trying to wash the blood and flesh off of cow bones - she failed of course and that was the point - no matter how hard you try they will still be bloody bones (in this context the blood on the bones symbolized the shame of the Yugoslav wars, and in Konatrakta's performance the health care system is trying to wash away it's responsibility for people literally dying because of some bullshit paperwork and administration - but it is of course doomed to fail because the shame and blood cannot be washed away).

Also very meaningful, being about the paradoxical mental stress (and therefore unhealthiness)that we come across when we focus too much on the health of our body

There are more than 2-3 different, important topics in the song and even more interpretations. It needs listening/ watching 4-5x to understand the metaphorical meaning (this isn't an usual la-la-laa song).
    1. Megan: Rich people/ contrast in lifestyle, "beauty" (silicon breasts, botox, artificial teeth etc.), Comparison of their artificiallity and us, ordinary people on the other side.
    2. Washing hands: in Slavic nations it emphasises how the "authorities/governments" "washing hands" or not taking responsibility for the wellbeing of the ordinary people (water washes everything/every dirt from their hands/authorities hands).
    3. Last 3 years & Covid-19 measures, people were locked at home, directed to wash hands/face etc. in order to keep themselves healthy but at the same time them 5 people in dark clothes standing & watching?! These are the authorities.
    4. "Let the heart beating..." we are actually left alone, nobody cares about ordinary people.
    5. Them 4-5 people in black, standing, watching, monitoring = the authorities or trends (celebrities from the other side of Atlantic), restricting/limiting us, ordinary people.
    6. Find a video with English subtitles and read what is she singing in her last 3-4 sentences in Latin!!!! This is actually the finale..." ill/sick mind in the healthy body" = we became unwell/ill because of the restrictions during last few years...the ongoing lockdowns across the planet created so many mental health problems.
    7. Now after hearing/ understanding last 3 sentences, go to the beginning and start again... here come the rich people (Megan)... they can be "beautiful" ...bla,bla... but in the end copiyng them, celebrities makes us all artificial and we lost our mind, ourselves, we gave/sold our souls in this horrible, capitalistic/consumers society because of copying various top models and celebrities and wanting to be/look like them. Actually, we end wasting our life in copying celebrities and dreaming about them, it actually makes us (the whole planet) brainwashed.
    8. What is important is that the song doesn't end with 2-3 sentences in Latin BUT you can from the end of the song connect to the beginning and start going/watching/listening again. So the story/song doesn't end but continues with the beginning of the same song (celebrities and what they represent).
Try listening/ watching 4-5x ..and it will all start making sense :)

The very title of the song "In corpore sano" has a historical background. Namely, it is a part of the Latin proverb "Mens sana in corpore sano" which means "In a healthy body a healthy spirit". It is believed that it was first used by the Roman satirist Juvenal, i.e. that this is an abbreviated form of his saying: "Orandum est ut sit mens sana in corpore sano", ie "One should pray for a healthy spirit in a healthy body". Constract's verse "God of Health" is probably on the trail of this. These are not the only verses of the song that are in Latin. Here is the complete text: “What is the secret of healthy hair Megan Markle? What's the secret? What is the secret of healthy hair Megan Markle? What's the secret? (What's the secret?) I think it's deep hydration. They say that everything is clearly visible on the skin and hair. it's magic (In the name of health) An artist can be healthy Be healthy, be healthy Be healthy, bi-bi-bi-be healthy Be healthy, be healthy Be healthy, can, can, can In corpore sano, in corpore sano In corpore sano, in corpore sano In corpore sano, in corpore sano Corpus is sano and what are we going to do now? I want to go to the bathroom only Animal tristis to go to the bathroom I want to go to the bathroom to go to the store to go to the bathroom And what are we going to do now? In a healthy body, in a healthy body, In a healthy body, in a healthy body In a healthy body, in a healthy body The body is healthy, And what do we do now? A weak mind in a healthy body, A sad soul in a healthy body, A desperate mind in a healthy body, A frightened mind in a healthy body, And what do we do now? ” The poem can therefore be "read" in several ways. It may be a review of the crown pandemic that is (hopefully) behind us. He can talk about the bad health care system in Serbia, because of which freelance artists do not have a booklet, nor the possibility to be treated when they understand. It can be interpreted as pressure on women, especially those in public life, to always be beautiful. Finally, he can talk about mental health, which is sometimes neglected in relation to physical health - the song explicitly says that he can be weak in a healthy body. desperate and frightened mind or sad soul. Just as Konstrakta says at the end - "So what do we do now?" desperate and frightened mind or sad soul. Just as Konstrakta says at the end - "So what do we do now?" desperate and frightened mind or sad soul. Just as Konstrakta says at the end - "So what do we do now?"

Fact Check: artists in Serbia that are certified self-employed artists (certified by professional artistic associations), with the social-professional status "samostalni umetnik" (independent/self-employed/free-lance artist) do have health insurance and social security (pension-invalidity insurance)!!! She said, in the song, "nemam knjižicu" which could correctly be translated as "I don't have a health insurance card" or "(but) I don't have a health insurance card". So, that is a reflection of her own, personal, situation... The only downside for certified artists in Serbia is that they must regularly, once a year, or sometimes every 6 months, prove their artistic activity (publication of works/released musical works/ certified art exhibitions, group shows or solo exhibitions, etc.). So lets keep our facts clear in a real legal and administrative sense without improvisations or any prejudices! The song is nice and is socially critical and constructive! Peace and love to all!

As an artist, you should most definitely try it again with the lyrics, perhaps the national finals performance. This is pure art and the key is in the lyrics as you have already guessed. Lyrics should be considered in conjunction with the staging as well as with the composition, particularly the beat which resembles the heartbeat - there’s a reason for that (again, the lyrics!). Overall, the layers of symbols and meaning make this fantastic piece of art a true masterpiece you’ll most definitely enjoy, and I would be even more enthusiastic to see your interpretation of the lyrics whilst watching her perform live!

Mens sana in corpore sano (A sound mind in a sound body). The point artist is trying to make is that news media write and talk about health, supplements, diet, beauty, exercising... Meghan Markle was mentioned because in media there was an article about most important issue for the survival of life on our planet, her hair. According to media, woman has to be beautiful, artist has to be beautiful and healthy otherwise can not succeed. And artist asks: What about "Mens sana" part? Media do not care about state of mind, peoples spirit, mental health. To the contrary. Fake news, all sorts of lies (Serbians are especially sensitive because they were and still are victims of media warfare for over three decades) are there to make us total idiots, ignorant about what really is happening around us, spreading belief that nuclear war can be won or that Putin is going to back down if enough pressure he is under, unaware of how close we are of destroying our home, Earth. Read lyrics carefully several times, and pay attention to lyrics at the end:
"A sick mind in a healthy body
A sad soul in a healthy body
A desperate mind in a healthy body
A terrified mind in a healthy body"
Celebrities appear beautiful, healthy and they are successful. Than, unexpectedly, they commit a suicide. Whitney Houston, Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain...
It is a metaphor. She represents health system which washes hands (denies responsibility). Whole stage is a metaphor. "Metallic voices" and robotic movements with hands represent estrangement - dehumanization. During performance there's no emotion on her face. She is like robot. She walks her dog. That is another sign of estrangement, proof that our civilization is on verge of extinction. It is sad that dog became man's "best friend". I remember times (I am 67) when my best friends walked on two legs (and without leash - covid pass or passport). Music is, also, descriptive. After "I do not have health insurance" there is GP and rhythm (heart beat) stops and there is a "cuckoo" musical effect symbolising psychotic episode - travel to "parallel - alternative world", something like "alternative truth" as Donald Trump said. At the end there is sequence of semi-tone steps upward in music called "tonal jump" used to elevate tension towards climax: "So, now what"? Very well done. Do not take everything literary.

It's not my coment, but it's certainly the best explanation. By the way, this song doesn't deserve this competition, like eurosong. This is pure art and tatal avantgarde.
Lyrics may seem a bit silly at first, they are actually dead serious. There are so many layers to the song and a lot of space for different interpretations:
The name of the song "In corpore sano" is in Latin and means "In a healthy body". It’s referring to the Latin saying "Mens sana in corpore sano" meaning "A healthy mind in a healthy body".
    - First: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty! That's what beauty magazines do/they create insecurities about your hair, skin, weight, etc., and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration"
    - Second: Konstrakta talks about how our skin and hair often signal some health issues, for example, liver and spleen problems. The reason she is thinking this is because she's worried about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check-up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance, this is so important because independent artists in Serbia don't have health insurance.
    - Third: Then we hear her saying how an artist must be healthy, a reference to Marina Abramovic’s (internationally known Serbian performance artist) performances called “Art must be pretty, an artist must be pretty” where she sits for hours combing her hair while repeating that cause she realized people focused a lot on her looks and her hair being messy and prioritized that over her art, and the reason she needs to be healthy is that she can't afford to get treatment.
    - Fourth: the "Autonomic nervous system" part talks about how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes how she walks her dog, on a beautiful summer day, her heart beats on its own, it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart hoping it won't fail her (if it does fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that), and that's why she prays to God, "God give us health".
    - Fifth: She then says "I DON'T HAVE THE HEALTH INSURANCE!" (Even with "free" health insurance we are still paying a lot for medications, fees, etc. We are always paying insurance through salaries, for both employed and unemployed, and if you don't have "free" health insurance, you are paying way more, which is a situation with independent artists in Serbia.)
    - Sixth: Phrase "Boze zdravlja"/"God grant us health". This is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. She then says, the artist (she) is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic because she is invisible to health care, they won't treat her!
    - Seventh: Now, last part, it's basically the old Latin saying: Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), except that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy, the soul inside is desperate, we are all obsessed with improving our health, we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements, but what about our mind?
Mens infirma in corpore sano - Weak mind in a healthy body
Animus tristis in corpore sano - A sad soul in a healthy body
Mens desperata in corpore sano - Desperate mind in a healthy body
Mens conterrita in corpore sano - A frightened mind in a healthy body
The endless chanting of the mantra about a healthy body is destroyed by enumerating the weaknesses of the mind and soul from which no health can be born. The final verse of the song "and what are we going to do now" is a jargon of common sense cold shower which was poured over the mass media propaganda about a healthy body without a healthy mind and soul, after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now?
    Now about the handwashing:
    1) She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands off" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixion of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, many people in the government or in positions are washing their hands off and can't help you because of the Law.
    2) People standing behind her can be priests that pray for her health and/or are getting ready for her to die.

In Serbia, everyone can have health insurance, even if they are not employed. All you have to do is apply to the Employment Bureau.
Happiness is that the heart, life, is an automaton, independent. The heart also symbolizes affection for someone. If I don’t have a health booklet, there is no oversight and control over my health. And you know how the media can direct emotions towards something or someone. Through propaganda ... NO monitoring, ie. control and supervision over my health, ie. with my heart, my life, thank God that it is autonomous and I can't do anything to him and that someone wants it. Not taking the booklet does not allow control over less autonomous systems in the body. Reflect this on your lifestyle. We have nothing to do with all this. Hand washing in our language has symbolism, dirty hands, dirty conscience, what can or cannot be washed. She wants to say that she has nothing to do with some things and that her conscience is clear. You don't control my heart, my soul, because it's autonomous, so what are you going to do now...

I give confidence, let it knock, let it breathe
God of health, God of health, God of health
    I don't have a booklet
    So how to follow me
    To take care of me
    The artist is invisible
You don't see me, it's magic
    An artist can be healthy
    Be healthy, be healthy
To be healthy, to be-to-be-to-be healthy
    Be healthy, be healthy
It can, it can, it can
In corpore sano, in corpore sano
In corpore sano, in corpore sano
In corpore sano, in corpore sano
Corpus is sanum and what do we do now?
I have to go to the bathroom
    Animus tristis in corpore sano
I was expecting nothing in the body
I have a lot of fun
And what do we do now?

In corpore sano is Latin, it's the second part of the saying "mens sana in corpore sano", which means "a healthy mind (is located) in a healthy body". Romans used to believe that sport or physical activity in general helped to have a better mental capacity. I don't speak Serbian, so I have no clue to know if this song is related to this philosophy, but maybe it is

Its more like against all silly, empty health advices present everywhere... Against obsession about only physical (scared, sick, frightened mind in healthy body) and neglecting spirit... Inequality in getting health insurance.... So many ways for interpretation... Thats the biggest quality of this song.

It is totally related to the proverb. Konstrakta questions it: a weak mind in a healthy body, a sad soul in a healthy body, a deperate mind in a healthy body, a frightened mind in a healthy body, so what do we do then?
