  • Move over Monopoly, there's a newer board game in town. "Settlers of Catan," a game night classic modeled after the Vikings' journey to Iceland, has sold over 24 million copies since its release in 1994. Creator Klaus Teuber lives in Germany, where running the Catan empire has become a family affair and a global operation.

When the game won "Spiel des Jahres"(game of the year)- award here in Germany, we bought it and me and the crew played it till we dropped. One day in 1998 we had a serious discussion about the rules that it nearly resorted in violence. I turned on my computer and started this new wicked thing called internet I was paying a lot of money for. I opened the homepage of the company and wrote an email and asked how to solve the problem. The next day i got an answer....by Klaus Teuber himself! Even today I'm still blown away. The guy was like a god for us :)

I don't remember exactly. I know that we had a lot of fights about the "longest road". It could have been the question if you have to put the "road" away if somebody else TOO gets five streets in a row or if you keep it until somebody gets OVER 5 streets in a row an give the "road" directly to him. I guess this question was solved ages ago but we were playing the first edition with the wood meeples. The rulework was full of gaps at that time.

Was introduced this game by a friend who has a rare form of blood cancer. We had lots of fun playing this game when I visited him, we laughed, had bitter rivalry and the great part of it was that we had some time away the cancer.
We played couple of times during his times of recovery and relapse. Later on, I got the expansion and wanted to play with him. He got really sick and tired so we did not managed to try it out together. A few months later, he left for a better place. Thanks to this game, I built some wonderful memories with him at times. Precious time and laughter together.

Yep this causes you big problems. One it gives you a false leadamd from then on everyone will block you because you have more victory points and also using your first 5 wood just to make longest road isn't efficient as you can make more branches and reach more settlement spots if ypu don't just build one single road. Also you shouldn't bother linking your two settlements. The beginning is for expanding out and getting new settlements and new numbers and mire resources. Just for example linking two close settlements is a waste if wood. Mid or late game by all means.

Peaceful? I think Catan is the most toxic board game I've ever played. Monopoly has nothing on Catan. I mean, in Catan, the goal is to convince the whole table that someone else is in the lead and once you've done that, you'll all collaborate to ruin that player's game. And guess what? You'll always succeed too. You can block off income, roads and settlements. Then you can steal, refuse trading and contest their win condition. It's devastating honestly.
In Monopoly, you're mostly at the mercy of the dice, that's nowhere near as personal.

But it does depend on who you’re playing with. I’ve played with friends before who always apologized whenever they moved the robber onto other people or just moved it back to the desert. I've gone through two classic board games, owned seafarers and the 6 person expansion, and I play on my phone religiously. My tip for winning is to build alot on a single resource and take the port for that resource.
You also always need to keep someone else set up as the target even of you're winning.

    3 Strategy Tips:
    - The most important decision in the game is your 2 initial settlements.
    - The most valuable resources are Wheat/Ore/Sheep/Brick/Wood, in that order.
    - Frugal building (closest available expansion) is often better than optimal building (reaching a far away 8 ore)
    3 Trading Tips:
    - Trade on your own turn when you can, it gives you more options and leverage.
    - Figure out what resource/goal is valuable to your opponent, make it clear that your trade will help them accomplish that, mark up your trade cost.
    - Trade with players that are less of a threat to you and boycott trades with leaders.
    3 Placement Tips:
    - Ensure you get a wheat or ore spot.
    - The higher total number of pips, the better. 10 pips = 27% chance for resources, 11 pips = 30%
    - Variety of resources hexes > Being the sheep king lol

What makes Brick more valuable than wood? Is it just because there's one less hex of it?

Dice rolling frequency from high(left) to low (right). 8, 6/9, 5, 4, 10, 3, 12, 11, 2. Number 7 is not included as won't yeild any resources but makes you cry.
